What Centers are available in the free agent market this off season ? I have a feeling Blake is going to go after a center with his comments today

https://capfriendly.com/browse/free-agents/2018/points/all/center/ufa

As far as gritty, two-way, third/fourth line options go, the following names will be available on July 1:

Martin Hanzal
Mike Fisher
Nick Bonino
Brian Boyle
Dominic Moore
Daniel Winnik
John Mitchell
Jay McClement

The top 3-4 names on that list are likely to command a decent payday as UFAs, so I'm not sure if they'd be considered realistic options. The latter 4 on that list are better suited for fourth line duty, similar to how Colin Fraser was utilized.

I imagine they still are going to consider Shore and Dowd in those roles, or look to use Dowd as a spare (or possibly moved to wing?) and get a bit more experience and grit down the middle.

The Kings really did lose that edge that both Stoll and Richards provided. Their replacements aren't as gritty as their predecessors.

I would think the Kings are going to be looking at backup options who are willing to accept $2M or less given their cap implications. I don't think Miller will be looking at that nor would he want to be a backup goalie who only appears in 25 or so games.

I'm thinking names like Condon, Nilsson, Kinkaid, Kuemper, Johnson, possibly Darling.

I also figure they'll keep both Zatkoff and Campbell in the AHL as well. Can't imagine Vegas looking at them as goaltending options in the expansion draft.

depending on how much we got left id g as high as a 1.5 million Look at what going cheap got us this year with Zatkoff Quality backup is important

I'm not sure goalie salaries are linear with performance, i.e. a $1.5MM goalie is automatically better than a $1.0MM goalie.

Heck, Budaj at $600k outplayed just about every backup (and a few starters) in the league last year.

I vote we sign 3 goalies at $900k and let them battle it out in training camp. The two losers are sent to Ontario, where they won't impact our cap and the 3rd will still be $900k. Wouldn't mind bringing Budaj back on a $900k contract for that matter.

Both Zatkoff and Campbell are under contract next season. I somehow doubt they'll be going the route you suggested.

Absolutely. Another reason Bartosak screwed things up.

Zatkoff had a career worst season, at any level, going back to his USHL days. It wasn't some huge signing, but there was no reason to think he'd have a career worst season on a team that is supposed to make goalies look good.

If Miller is just dead set to get even closer to his wife and all that, and maybe at the age of 37, he figures what the hell, if he can still make $1m or so to be a backup, why not go for it. I'd have nothing against it if that move was made.

20. Los Angeles reached out to University of Denver head coach Jim Montgomery about joining John Stevens on the bench. That won’t happen, but it gives you an idea into what they are thinking. There are rumblings Montgomery will meet with Florida this week. Very serious candidate. Dave Hakstol set a high bar when he left North Dakota for about $2 million per season in Philadelphia. That might be what it takes to get Montgomery.

Also worth noting...
23. Yzerman wouldn’t address the aborted Kevin Shattenkirk trade, but did say the Lightning will look at adding “more offence from the blue line, but there’s no guarantee we can do that.â€

Is there a preference for a right or left shot? “Doesn’t matter,†he replied.

I disagree i think at 37 hes got his money in the game. Moving closer to the wife and family would be more important. He realizes im sure hes not going to be a starter for ever and coming here for a year or two may even extend his career with our strong defense first numbers. I think Quick needs more rest and limit him to 60-64 games at max to keep him fresh for playoffs. I think it also lowers his risk of another injury. At worse we have someone who has proven he can play a starters role to step in. Maybe have a appearances bonus of if he gets more then 35 games its a extra 100 k or something like that

Given his age and possible desire to be in LA (where he resides during the off-season), it may possibly be an attractive option for Miller.

The thing is if he is willing to accept less than market value to come in here. You are right in that they definitely should give Quick more breaks and that 60-65 games is what they should limit him to. But we don't know if Miller will want to sit for that many games. That's why I'm not sure if he'll settle for less money to play far less games.

He's coming off a season of making $6M and appearing in 50+ games and posted respectable numbers on a very bad teams. I think teams in search of goaltending may be able to offer him more cash on a short term deal.

He will have options as well with the following teams likely being in the market for goaltending help: Islanders, Flyers, Stars, Sabres, Flames, Jets, Golden Knights, Canucks, etc.

Ben Bishop, Brian Elliott, Steve Mason and Jonathan Bernier will also be free agents, and Marc-Andre Fleury may be a trade option (if Vegas doesn't select him in the expansion draft).

The one player that is completely off limits.

No secret the Leafs are going to be looking for help on the backend this offseason. I would pick up the phone and gauge their interest in Muzzin. Would love to see a guy like Nylander as part of a return.

The Leafs also have a couple of decent goalie prospects with their AHL club in Sparks and Bibeau.

The time around the expansion draft will be very interesting. I think there will be plenty of maneuvering by NHL clubs prior to and once Vegas makes their selections.

First off thank you I think its the first time in a long time you have said you agree with me on something so i'm marking it on a calendar lmao :sarcasm: I agree hes had a great season as well However i see as many goalies as there is in the off season and few starting spots as there is There's a buyers market for goalies I don't see him chasing the dollar at this point in his career Location is more important at his age
