LA used to be able to woo players over. Not so much lately.

A team like Edmonton can call itself an up and comer while having McDavid. I bet Aston-Reece signs there. I think LA is a long shot.

How many college FAs have we signed over the years? It's certainly not many. I wouldn't suggest much has changed in that regard, plus the McDavid effect is real. We're definitely a long shot; i'm surprised our name was mentioned at all, but it had me stoked.

My memory's failing me, but the two I recall off the top of my head are Davis Drewiske and Joe Piskula.

Not sure what's going to be done with the roster moving forward, but there is obviously a plan. I said before Sutter needed to go for this team to be successful this year, and I'm sticking with that. I don't necessarily agree with him staying on, but I know it's going to happen. I would be surprised if any changes were made anywhere in the organization. I think there is a plan, and that this year was considered a throwaway.

This quote the other day caught me off guard.

"We’re trying to be a good middle-of-the-pack team, which is what our realistic expectations were coming into the year instead of saying ‘this is what we are, this is what we [aren’t],’ and it’s a real fair evaluation of our group."

That's really candid for Sutter, it's not typical of him to say things like that. And where he's at in his career, I think it's highly unlikely he would come back for a season that was expected to be mediocre unless he was assured to be here a couple years after to try and win.

I really don't think what is happening right now is all that surprising to DL/DS, outside of maybe the injuries. This team is no longer good enough to absorb some of the bad luck they've experienced this year. DL openly talking about possibly bringing up some youth is also a good indicator that playoffs aren't really expected.

It's genuinely hard to say what's going to happen. I guess AEG could step in and throw a wrench in things, but if there's a plan they are certainly on board.

I'm really hoping they protect all the kids in the expansion draft and leave guys like kopi gaborik and muzzin unprotected.

Gravel and LaDue. Although they were our draft picks also.

Purcell was if my memory is working.

Steven Reinprecht was also one in 2000

Kopitar has a down year and you're ready to lose him for nothing?

Unbelievable.

At this point there really is nothing to be done with Kopitar, except hope he steps up.

The time to make a decision on him was last season, and Dean made the wrong choice in allowing Kopitar and his agent to bend him over the negotiating table.

I know some other GM would have given him close to the same ridiculous deal. The point is, let the other GMs hand out ridiculous deals.

Everyone was saying they would sacrifice 4 years of crap hockey on the back end of Kopitar's contract for the chance to win another cup over the next few seasons, but it doesn't appear as if Kopitar is willing to take the bit in his mouth and run.

This is what often happens with players around 30 years of age.

What exactly did you expect to happen? Anything Lombardi would've done after June of 2014 with Kopitar would've been the wrong move. A #1 center, with a $7m cap hit for another couple years, coming off a 2nd Cup? That's when you trade him.

So have we come back full circle to "trade all your players once they become UFAs or after they sign a 2-year sweetheart discount UFA contract so you don't have them at all after 30?"

Tough to find a GM that actually works that way voluntarily.

To go down the moneypuck road, the last good trades Lombardi made were in June 2008. Cammalleri for a 1st is good, but then you have to pick a better player. Got Stoll and Greene for Visnovsky, so 2 for 1 as you have Doughty taking over for Visnovsky. So really 3 for 1. Everything since then has been the wrong move in a cap world. No young asset should be traded for an older one. Carter is now 32. Whoever would've been the Kings pick in 2013 would only be 22 right now. That's still 5 years until he's a UFA.

I don't think any deadline acquisition has really made any impact at all.

Hell, look at the players who weren't moved as well. Matt Duchene has been downright awful. Landeskog has had a putrid season as well. Goes to show you how much a team will suffer when their top players don't produce.

The Kings are suffering as a result of that as well.

You mean it wasnt dwight kings fault?

Nope, you trade them if they want 8-year, big cap hit deals.
