Anyone see Dennis Bernstein Latest 4th period piece on the Kings? (scroll down past the Dallas Stars part) Interesting read for sure.

the Gaborik bit is pretty interesting. can you imagine him being bought out??

That whole thing was actually a really interesting read, nice work by Bernstein. Great part at the end about the difference between Arizona and Colorado, hadn't even though about that. Arizona is really busting their ***** while Colorado is rolling over and dying.

Speaking of Arizona, I don't want him back or anything, but I really liked and miss Schenn. You can tell he cares and gives it is all and you can often see flashes of why he was drafted so high. Obviously he's just terribly inconsistent and prone to disaster but he's a really likeable dude.

I'll believe that when I see it. The $3.75m in cap space it gets you next year, is that a lot? They're at $59m right now for next year, and if Toffoli and Pearson take up roughly $10m, that leaves about $4m with the cap staying at $73m. They have to fill about 5 or 6 roster spots after Toffoli and Pearson. Buy Gaborik out, that goes to almost $8m in cap space, plus whoever they lose in the draft. The highest paid guy they lose in the draft would be Lewis. So maybe $10m to play with, but, 5, 6, 7 roster spots to fill. They might be able to bring in 1 semi major player, and that's if cheap young guys fill out the rest of the roster. Then you have to worry about the $3m in dead cap space from Gaborik for 2 years starting in the 19-20 season. Maybe Lombardi says, well, screw 2 years from now, there's still a chance in the next couple years if we can get a guy that can actually score a goal. The 19-20 season, we'll deal with that when it comes.

If Brown was bought out, that might then be $14-15m for this summer? That would really be saying that 2, 3, 4 years from now, who cares. They would have to be completely all in next year, and maybe the year after that. That would be the window, and then it would slam shut for a while, because then Brown's $3m in dead cap space would kick in. That would Brown + Gaborik + Richards, which would be over $7m, maybe $8m in dead cap space.

It's something to think about, but we'll see.

NOBODY did a better job screening our goalie than Schenn.

The thing about the Kings is their system wreaks havoc on scorers, especially before they get acclimated. Even if they bought out Gaborik, they aren't bringing in a sure-fire scorer in the price range they can afford. I would put the odds at Gaborik having a resurgence and going on a hot streak higher than whoever they bring in producing right away. A buyout isn't worth the risk at this point, IMO.

He definitely needs a kick in the pants though. Since his injury there have been obvious short-cuts in his game. Dean needs to have a heart to heart with him and emphasize the "bus vs. jet" in the conversation.

A buy out of Brown and/or Gaborik doesn't make any sense. We basically have to eat parts of their cap hit for double the remaining term. I think these players are still serviceable bottom 6 players, that may occasionally show signs of top 6 players. I would rather keep them around until their contracts are two years from being expired and then negotiate a cap dump trade by tacking on prospect(s) or picks.

The biggest priority next season will be to unload Greene and Clifford. I think trading Greene is totally doable, since its his last year and a cap floor team would gladly take on his contract if we provide a draft pick. Clifford's $1.6MM cap hit is harder to trade because of his term, but you never know. If we were able to get rid of Greene and Clifford next season, we would save $4.1MM, which is huge.

Yes it is.

Just a few minutes after the Florida win, I received a text that read “see what happens when (Gaborik) goes down (in the lineup)†-- a distressing observation for a team that hadn’t scored in three regulation games coming in and cannot solve the riddle of finding another goal-scorer.

Gaborik continues to play a lackadaisical east-west style on this north-south team that I’m told does not sit well with his teammates, coaching staff and front office (see a pattern?). But with four years remaining on a front loaded deal with a salary cap hit of $4.875 million, there’s little Sutter can do other than to shorten his time on ice in the hopes to spur him once playoff time rolls around.

The 70s line has looked terrible together since Toffoli's return. Brown seems to be performing better as well with Carter and away from Kopitar.

Everyone seems to perform better away from Kopitar. He's turned into our version of Crosby where nobody can do anything when they're on his line.

Greene isn't all that attractive. He's not going to go to Russia without a team having to pay him, like Datsyuk. At this point, it wouldn't be a shock if he starts next year on LTIR and that's it. If that happens, why give a draft pick away? The Kings can just do the LTIR thing, keep the pick, and get the cap space. They can go like 10% over the cap in the summer, so his contract doesn't even hurt that much there either. If he's healthy by the buy out date, the cap hit isn't too bad if they went that way.

Nope.

Kopitar's WOWYs this year:

Some people, like Brown, may generate a little bit more offense away from Kopi but they get absolutely blown up defensively in comparison.

Very few players do better away from Kopitar--Pearson, for example--but most are extremely small sample sizes that are benefitting less from being AWAY from Kopi (as evidenced by his strong numbers w/o) and rather more from being with carter.

Obviously we want his production to go up but thats' starting to happen and given it seems like the common feeling around here lately is Kopitar is garbage those numbers should open some eyes.

By no means am I saying he's garbage, because I don't see him as that, it just that it reminds me a lot of how players have had trouble playing along side Crosby at times. The problem are very similar when you think about it, as far getting a good solid scoring winger. How many years have we heard that the Pens still can't find a guy to play wing with him?

would like to try Gabby on a line with Carter and Pearson before writing him off. get his legs going, would be neat to see an all speed line.

Kopitar, Toffoli and Kempe may be interesting

Brown back with Dowd

I'd like to see...

Pearson--Kopitar--Toffoli (help Kopitar like they did with Carter)
Kempe--Carter--Gaborik (Speed for days)
Brown--Dowd--Lewis (Gritty line)
King--Shore--Clifford (the we need any kind of 4th line)

But was hoping Brodz got called up too

Oh, I totally get that. Chemistry is a big thing.

Kempe seems like a similar player in a way. Gabby is way more east-west where Kopi is relative simple north-south. He's very skilled, but plays more of a powerful, simple game.

Some of the Kings including Gaborik were in Cuba during the off week. Hopefully they have good gyms in Cuba-and no cigars or alcohol.
