I always wondered why Sutter took that extension. This is his 6th season as head coach - I really thought he would be done after last year.

2011-2012 - Takes over and wins Stanley Cup.
2012-2013 - Conference Finals in Lockout Season.
2013-2014 - Stanley Cup Winner.
2014-2015 - Miss Playoffs.
2015-2016 - Eliminated in 1st Round.
2016-2017 - Pending.

Sutter has two cups. Maybe it's time to go back home. After this season he has 1 more year then an option year.

Kings have two solid back ups in Stevens and Payne - though Stevens has paid his dues big time. He has been with LA since 2010 - even longer than Sutter.

Most everyone assumes Stevens takes over when or if anything happens.
The big question is does that change make any difference to the style this team plays?
Sadly I'm one that thinks it won't. But it could light a fire under the team to play better.

1 - Chris Sutter
2 - Pocket some millions
3 - No real pressure this year

I posted it in a thread earlier this month, but he will be close or will surpass the amount of games he coached in SJ--when you include playoff games--at the end of this season.

By the end of this season, he will have coached one team longer--or close to it--than he ever has before. I will not be surprised in the least if this is his last season. I think he could of gone back to the farm no problem after last season but family reasons led him to stay. He said as much in his interview regarding the extension:

“It’s a big factor,†the 57-year-old Sutter said. “As you get older it makes sense that your family has input in it. There’s a lot more that goes into it. If I don’t sound excited it’s because I don’t have to sound excited because I know Chris is.â€

Now, he also said this wasn't his last contract and he has plenty of coaching left, but I'm not so sure about that one. The fact that the Kings have to pay a portion of his salary in Year 3--even if the 3rd year option isn't used--also helps a lot.

I still think that whole incident of locking Sutter out of the locker was complete ********. Sure, Lombardi played it off as the "boys banding together" and showed him by going on a hot streak, but I think that's a load of crap.

I don't know if any resentment still exists, but there's no way that didn't cause some strife between the players and the coach. Either way, you don't do that to your coach. You never heard about the Red Wings doing such a thing to Scotty Bowman, or the Blackhawks doing that to Joel Quenneville. That's just disrespectful and immature.

And for the record, even I have tuned out of whatever words come out of Darryl Sutter's mouth nowadays. I used to look forward to reading his post game comments but now it is just as exhaustive as watching the Kings play. But we're observers and fans, not paid professionals, and that type of conduct was anything but professional.

I also don't like how some guys really aren't being held accountable for the position this team is in. Sutter just recently said he's fine with Kopitar's numbers because of all of the other things he does on the ice. That's not what I want to hear when this team is among the worst performing team's offensively.

Jesus Christ does this team have problems.

Because he's not wrong. Kopitar is over a PPG in the last little bit. We can focus on just his goal numbers if you want, but the fact is he is the most 'productive' player on our team for the last 10 games or so and yes that's on top of everything else he's bringing.

That being said, I do wish he had some of the emotion of Stothers, who is actively challenging players when the lineup is depleted. Per Rosen:

"We know [Jonny Brodzinski] can score. Who else? Show me. So, that’s more what I’m focusing on. In the absence of the guys — we’ve got a long list of guys in that trainer’s room — so, show me, whether you’re up from Manch or just coming in from a different organization or you’ve been here all year long and you’re just waiting for that opportunity. Start showing me.”

"“They’re good hockey players but sometimes they need to be challenged to step out of their comfort zone or go beyond what’s maybe previously expected of them,” Stothers said. “If you’re a so-called checker or penalty killer, doesn’t mean you can’t score. I think in today’s game we’re all guilty of that. You just label one or two guys as your goal scorers. Everybody should be able to score. You don’t have to be pegged in that. Maybe that’s what you’re best suited for in an ideal situation, but in the short term step out, make a contribution.”"

There's a core that has won 2 Cups and has already gotten paid. What coach is coming in and getting through? If Kopitar doesn't want to shoot, if Doughty can do nothing but take a slap shot that gets blocked, if Gaborik is only getting older, they're not going to change.

Sutter knew what this season could be when he signed up. He'll be the coach until at least the end of next year, so if the players want to waste their own time, I guess we have a lot of fun games to watch for a while.

Wow, it's as if Mike Stothers is a regular on here. That is exactly what I want to hear from Sutter or Lombardi. These guys need to be challenged, and he hit the nail on the head in players needing to step out of their comfort zone. That's precisely what is happening with the parent club.

Funny how his concerns echo with what's been going on with the Kings the past couple of seasons. Stothers is stating exactly what so many have been saying about this team with the labeling of goal scorers and how players at this level have to produce.

When Anze Kopitar has as many goals as Dwight King and has one less than Lewis and Brown and one more than Clifford, then you really start to wonder what is wrong with him. He's not being paid $14 million in salary to be Martin Hanzal.

Remember Jeff Carter's outburst after the loss to Buffalo? That was an example of leadership, it showed that a player cared and found the team's performance to be unacceptable. There are a number of players on this roster who should not be happy with the season they're having, and I don't want to coddle them and admire what they've done over a small stretch. When you look at the big picture, this team has dug itself in a hole, and you can pinpoint exactly why they're in the position they're in.

I do think Sutter calls people out, just not during interviews. Ive seen clips of him absolutely eviscerating guys during practice...dropping F bombs left and right barking like a drill sergeant. Of course I could be wrong, but he strikes me as an old school coach that knows theres a time and place to call people out and chooses not to do so with the media

Sadly I'm one that thinks it won't. But it could light a fire under the team to play better.

I was a fan of Stevens in Philly when he was a coach and fired way too soon (Ed Snider overreact? There's a novel thought) He took over on 2006/07 to awful team and the next year they made the ECF. Would have gone further in 2009 but Richards blew out both shoulders and they lost in the quarter finals to the Pens. No shock he was fired after Chris Pronger arrived and started he locker room problems. He was a good coach, liked and respected by this players. His system was not like Sutter's, although the players were defensively responsible, it was not as stifling and allowed more creativity in the offensive zone and they produced in the 3 goals per game range on average. Both full seasons with him at the helm they were at the top in goal scoring (6th of 30 in 2008, 4th in 2009)

Also, he's a smart guy, he isn't blind a nd knows the NHL is evolving . If he is a head coach, he would make the changes that would allow the team to evolve and contend.

I always liked him, last Flyers coach I actually did like and would love to see him get another shot.

Encouraging to hear he was good in his short stint in Philly. I imagine he's learned even more after being an assistant coach under Sutter. This team desperately needs a new voice barking in their ear's, whether it be Stevens or Julien. I like Sutter, but his message has grown stale. It might be time to allow for more offensive creativity, we're still having trouble scoring goals and its been that way for far too long. Sure, a good corsi is nice, but it doesn't mean **** when you're not scoring. A team can't win on good corsi alone.

I'd still like to see what some of the youth from Ontario can do up front, at least Brodzinski. I know its still a long shot for Kempe and Amadio.

He was perhaps a bit too green. HE was only 40 when he became the FLyers coach. Although he had 6 yrs of success as the Phantoms coach in the AHL, 4 playoff berths and a Calder Cup, it probably would have been better to go the Ass't coach in the NHL route for a few years perhaps. The media here were of the opinion he was too close to the players , and used that for fuel when things went south in 2009 and he was fired . That he didn't' have the right kind of voice to discipline the younger players.
Anyway, I saw enough of what he had then to appreciate what a good coach should be, and have missed that ever since.

I agree and would like to add Sutter knows how long Kopitar has actually been hurt I am more then positive that Kopitar had been playing less then 100% for a good portion of this year something we as fans forget. Just because he was in the lineup doesn't mean he was 100 %

I still believe a top 2 defenseman can fetch a top 6 forward in any instance. Muzzin is still a top 2 defenseman and can certainly get a top 6 forward. How the hell Adam Larsson could get Taylor Hall shows that a team like Edmonton would pay a premium beyond Larsson's worth. Muzzin is better than him. Muzzin could probably get Landeskog right now, with perhaps a prospect added...mostly because Muzzin is 27 and Landeskpg is 24. Also consider Muzzin has a below market cap hit, compared to his peers. Several teams may lose a bonafide top 4 defenseman to expansion, but any team would protect Muzzin and welcome him in a deal.

Martinez is legit top 4 and may not land a good top 6 straght up. (then there's the argument that about legit top 6 forwards - Gaborik certianly is, but could be had with a draft pick, or decent prospect, no doubt..and Martinez is worth beyond that. Age and contracts play into all this, for true trade value.

The 'sudden' emergence of Forbert and Gravel is the best thing about this season, really, for the Kings. Ladue is about to press through too.
This will allow DL to move either Muzzin or Martinez to get the forward needed. It may seem crazy to play 3 rookies, but they are better than the Gilbert's, Ehrhoff's, Greene's, Scuderi's...and that's what counts at the end of the day.

Sure, in ordinary times Muzzin returns a top 6 forward. But any team trading for him now has to protect him for next year and will likely lose a good dman in addition to the forward sent to us. Few teams will be in a position to do that. Teams out of the hunt will wait to look for D men just before the draft when the panic selling begins. Teams in the hunt probably can't afford to lose a top six forward to stay in the hunt. To make a difference the Kings really need a top 3 forward or a rh dman equivalent to Muzzin.

In 3 of the last 5 seasons, and 2 of the last 3, he's setting career low's for goals. This year might be another dud, but next year will be the one to watch. Is he around 15 again, or does he shoot back up to 28?

Yah, the NHL Network replayed the road to the outdoor game from when they played SJ a couple years ago and Sutter's language uncensored was vastly different than the media scrums we see.

Implying that Sutter needs be more emotional or call people out are ridiculous criticisms.

Oh, I remember how he must still be hurt every single shift he takes. You can't miss it.

I don't want to rehash the voynov saga, but I thought this article was interesting for some perspective of perhaps how his values / upbringing may differ from ours. Obviously all Russians don't believe it is acceptable to bash the missus and domestic abuse happens in all countries.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4206926/Russian-newspaper-tells-women-proud-bruises.html

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law on Tuesday which decriminalises domestic violence, sparking allegations his government is 'trivialising' the problem.

The new Russian law reduces battery of a relative to a civil offence instead of a criminal one in first instances, when the victim suffered no serious harm
