To be fair, you did name just one second round pick. Most of those guys being top of the draft type picks. That's a bit different than Gravel, or even a more defensive player like Forbort that was taken in the middle of the 1st round.

The sophomore slump thing is usually for 19-20 year old's, not guys in their mid 20's that have been in a pro environment for a couple years. You can't discount the possibility though. It's not easy playing consistent defense at the NHL level. Those top forwards will find a flaw. 50 short games ago nobody knew for sure if Forbort or Gravel could play, so, we have to hope they can keep improving.

All right, I'll just pull similar (Defensemen in early to mid 20s) players from other teams:

Point production up or roughly even in 2nd year, often with upward trajectories
Sami Vatanen (Ducks), Kevin Connauton (Coyotes), Torey Krug (Bruins), Jake McCabe (Sabres), Dougie Hamilton (Flames), Justin Faulk (Canes), Trevor van Riemsdyk (Hawks), Tyson Barrie (Avs), Seth Jones (BJs), John Klingberg (Stars)...

I could keep going, but I don't have all day. Again, the "sophomore slump" is pretty much a myth and an excuse. No real truth to it.

Ask Ducks fans about Vatanen, he's buried on their depth chart now and likely to be moved. Parayko has struggled. Connauton isnt even getting games. Hamilton had a TERRIBLE start in Calgary. Klingberg has been healthy scratched for his play. Honestly I'm not even sure you did anything but look at a point line, if those guys didn't suffer a sophomore slump specifically, they tanked hard in their 3rd season. Call it 'growing pains' instead of sophomore slump if you like, the point is development isn't always linear.

What is the go with Klingberg? He seemed like a gifted offensive Dman that they locked up longterm. Has he **** the bed over there?

What about the Ghost too? He's been a healthy scratch.

True on Vatanen.

Why not? He has about $1.3MM cap hit for the second half of the season, his contract ends end of this year, and he is on pace for 40-50 points this year. He would be perfect on our third line, or we can play him as our second line center and move Carter to the wing.

If he sucks and is horrible defensively, we can just scratch him or waive him. We have a ton of cap space this season, why not take a chance without losing a draft pick for a rental?

You're kidding, right? Are you not aware of how much of a dick he is and how often he's changed teams? You're not picking up a player off of waivers for fantasy hockey purposes. He's a soft and lazy player with a big ego.

I am aware of him being a dick on the ice and his history with alcohol abuse. However, he has played well with Nashville after he resurrected his career. Also, again, I ask you, what is the down side? If he doesn't work out, we don't have to play him and we don't lose any assets since its a waiver pick up. If we had to trade a 1st or 2nd round pick for him, I would understand your concerns, but there is absolutely no downside in taking a chance.

Go check out ghosts numbers in philly, he was a healthy scratch a few times this year including last game and looks to be out for the game against us tomorrow too.

IMO, Hakstol's error, stripped his confidence. Last year he was fearless, confident, esp on the PP, now he hesitates, taking time to 'think'. Haks criticisms aren't always the best method. It's not just being scratched it's during games when he makes a mistake and then his minutes are taken away. Some is 2nd year adjustment, which alot players adjusting to the major leagues go thru, but I don't like Haks methods. Did it to Konecky too...in 5-1 loss to Canes, he made a costly turnover that led to goal in 1st period. Played 5 min in 1st, 7 for rest of game. He was benched vs Habs too. What i disagree with is the amount of errors the veteran players make, esp Giroux (lazy backchecker) who had 2 turnovers that led to goals in that game and a dumb penalty that led to a 3rd, Voracek, who is brutal at turnovers , Schenn as well. Make mistakes all the time, never get benched. Which send mixed signals. They should not be exempt, esp when they do it so often.

Haks has a brusk, tough approach and it's affected Ghost.
There isn't much about Haks I do like, esp the fact he's gimmecky college system that is th e reason this team is the worst 5 x5 team in the NHl and every player is a minus, not one player is on the right side of 0 .

He was also healthy scratched in the playoffs for being terrible.

Points aside he's not a "Kings" player on top of being a headcase.

I know we need an offensive injection and I agree that it's pretty much 'no risk' but the guy has every red flag possible--off ice behavior concerns, on-ice behavior concerns, soft, liability, not good enough to play top 6 in Nashville but not gritty enough for bottom six, the list goes on...

On the flipside, what you're pointing out, he's a free skill player who might be playing for his career and would be provided with the greatest amount of support.

I just ****ing despise the man, so honestly, I'm terribly biased.

Ugh no.

A lot of the players on the list are struggling.

The moral of the story is, it's hard to play Defense in the NHL consistently.

Especially for guys just breaking into the NHL, no matter the age.

Lets call it, not an established NHL veteran, slump, instead of sophomore slump, agree ?

Like who?

Boy those second years sure sucked for Crosby, Malkin, Kopitar, Doughty, Bergeron, Hossa, Toews, Kane, Tavares, Giroux, Thornton, Stamkos, Ovechkin. The vast majority of players improve or have equivalent seasons in their second year vs. first year.

I think this "sophomore slump" thing is just made up because people like alliteration.

You can't be serious with this post.

How on earth are the vast majority of NHL players even remotely as skilled, as these guys ?

You listed players that might very well end up in the HHOF.

That is like saying, Kyle Clifford can evolve into a scorer, cause Bergeron did.

Great insight as always.

Spending more than 1 post of effort on projecting out that a player can't be relied on because at some point in the future he might slump (unless his draft pedigree was at a particular level or above) is beyond silly or more specifically an indicator of serious pre-super bowl imbibement.

FYI, Kings play the Caps tomorrow so that's likely why they have a scout at the game.

As for the lone poster who wanted Mike Ribeiro claimed, sorry to disappoint you but 29 other teams passed on him and he cleared waivers.
