Quick on the opposite end of the rink working with Ranford. Practiced briefly with teammates. Still a ways away, but this indicates progress

Oh I don't think we will land him given the reasons, I just think he would be the better fit out of the two.

The no CAP increase is bad news. We would need to dump some players, but the question is who would take them?

They don't really have anyone that you would consider a contract dump. Arizona took Datsyuk, and Carolina took Bickell, because they had 1 year left. All the big money guys here are signed for too long for something like that.

Going by capfriendly, they're a little over $59m for next year. That's without Toffoli, Pearson, and various other RFA's. That's $14m if the cap doesn't decrease. Figure an additional, say, $6m between Toffoli and Pearson? That takes it down to about $8m. A few other RFA's, another few million. Lose someone in the expansion draft, so gain a little bit of space.

They can basically bring back the team they have, plus another player or two from Ontario. Maybe add a 3rd line kind of forward in free agency. If Forbort, Gravel, and LaDue make Muzzin or Martinez expendable, then they could bring in a top 6 guy in a trade. I would think Muzzin brings back the better player.

I imagine that's about it though. I would guess they pretty much have the core of the team that they'll roll with for the next handful of years.

i would like to see Brown go to the east and not end up in Vegas. team like the panthers could use him in Jolkinen's/Jagr's spot and they seemed to be missing leadership that Mitchell brought as their captain.

We will be lucky to get Toffoli and Pearson re-signed for 9-10 mil combined

Way too low for both, closer to 10M. Toffoli's at 3.2 now. If DL is smart, he'll get him on an LTC in the 6.5 range. If he doesn't , somebody else will. Seto gone.

Kings, Shore, Andreoff, LaDue, Gravel and Budaj also are on expiring deals.

Merch and Brodz can replace some of the forwards, but they still need a contract.
Not gonna be easy with just under 14M

I'm just thinking ahead here, but this team is actually starting to shape up to look really good for NEXT season.

Yes the youth around the league will be better and continue to push us down, but we're gonna be competitive several years after a cup, which is more than I thought.

I said an additional $6m between them, added to the current $4.6 for the two of them. Leaves them at like 6 roster spots to fill with about $8m to use, before losing someone in the expansion draft. It'll be tight, but it can be done. They just can't add anybody to start the year.

Those numbers do include Greene though, so if he's on LTIR all year next year, or retires, that's some more breathing room.

Depends on how things go. If they lose Dowd to Vegas, they have to find a 3rd center again. If it's Kempe or Amadio that gets the spot, it's another year of learning on the job for a young player. If Forbort/Gravel/LaDue can push Muzzin or Martinez out for a forward, that helps, because the same questions about Brown and Gaborik will still be there.

The zero-sum game Lombardi has to play will remain.

There is no current, they expire. And the Kings have 59.3M allocated for next season, which leaves abot 13.6 in CAP space for next year, which if you take about 10 out for TT and TP, leaves under 4 for all the rest

Yeah, duh, bad math on my part. Even less that Lombardi can do then.

With that cap figure and the expansion draft, gonna be an interesting offseason for everyone. Precious few teams will have the space to help everyone out for favors in return. Just be thankful most of our contracts aren't weighted with NTCs.

Pure hypothetical for everyone here...

Let's say Lombardi somehow gets GMGM to take either Gaborik or Brown. And let's say Shattenkirk is willing to sign here for, say, 6.9m for longer term (symbolically less than DD). Would you do it?

Shatty is RHD, he would replace Voynov's role, behind DD. On the left we have Forbort, Muzzin, Martinez. LaDue and Gravel can play bottom pair. Now we can deal a 4m LHD, recouping future assets and freeing up more cap space for TT and Tanner.

Kings won't add anyone on D, we are set for awhile...Kings will have an issue next year with Greene and Gravel as the extras. Let's also not forget Kurtis MacDermind chipping at the bit for Greene's replacement.

If anything, Kings will trade one of the 4 million guys - Martinez or Muzzin.

Doughty-Forbort
Muzzin-LaDue
Martinez-McNabb
extras: Gravel, Greene

Looking at this you have a 0 NHL games experience player as your 2nd pair RHD and two LHD as bottom pair.

At this point I don't consider Greene a NHL player and McNabb is borderline at best.

Well no GM would take Brown or Gaborik, but if they did, I would rather use that extra money to get a top 6 winger (assuming money is left after signing TT and Pearson). Swapping out Muzzin or Martinez for Shattenkirk will add about $3MM in cap hit, which is not worth it. Ideally, if LaDue proves he is the real deal, then we can deal Martinez in a trade for a top 6 winger, and slot LaDue in the second pair. We can then sign a Gilbert like defenseman as an extra, until another defenseman from Ontario is ready to be called up.

Forbort-Doughty
Muzzin-LaDue
McNabb-Gravel

Any trade would have to be done after the expansion draft to see if Vegas takes McNabb or Dowd. If Vegas takes McNabb, we may need to keep Martinez and look through other means for a winger (test out Kempe or Brodzinski or a reclamation project).

Forbert is already much better than Muzzin defensively. You could also keep Martinez/Forbert if that pairing continues to achieve and try Ladue with either McNabb or Gravel or Gravel/McNabb.

Forbort/Gravel are due for the dreaded sophomore slump, keep that in mind next season.

It happens to a lot of young players.
