Agreed. With Greene gone, Dylan could be a solution.

That would give the Kings the luxury also of trading one of Andreoff, Clifford, or Nolan - though I would keep Nolan.

Dylan McIlrath (FLA) and Paul Thompson (FLA) clear waivers.

We certainly didn't need to waive Gilbert to make room for Toffoli, since Greene is out. I hope nobody picks up Gilbert though. We could use him as insurance if one of our defenseman gets injured.

This could either mean a trade or LaDue is getting his cup of coffee. The latter, however, doesn't make sense because why call up LaDue to sit as the 7th defenseman when he could be getting playing time in Ontario? Maybe Sutter wants to sit McNabb for his bad game in AZ?

Every team in the league has a Gilbert buried in the minors. It's not like the Kings don't have other options to bring up to do what he does.

I think the bigger problem is that the Reign are waaaay saturated with vets and can't play them all. Gilbert just throws one more on the pile.

Actually, we don't. Other than LaDue, no one in Ontario can fill in our defensive pairs if someone were to get injured. I also wouldn't want LaDue called up this year. Too many rookies on the team at one time. Its better if he gets some playing time in Ontario. Gilbert was the temporary plug DL signed, and he was doing an okay job. No worse than other plugs we have had in the past like Scuderi 2.0, Schenn and McBain.

Not every team, and the Kings already have two that fit that category in Purcell and Scuderi. Not that Scuderi is around all that often.

Thanks to trades of picks and prospects, not signing too many of the prospects recently picked, guys staying in college, or prospects not having great seasons in the AHL, 5 of the top 7 scorers in Ontario are between the ages of 27 and 31. Then 3 of those 5 are on AHL deals.

I don't think this means DL was a bad GM this off season. If you take a look, all of those deals had very minimal cap implications on this team, as the players were signed for one-year terms and for salaries that did not exceed $1.6MM, which means when sent to Ontario, there is either no or less than $800k cap hit for this year.

DL did the right thing not giving out the insane contracts some other teams did for Lucic, Ladd, Yandle, and Okposo. He also didn't trade away valuable draft picks.

There's the list of players that have been waived this season. You can sort through the defensemen and see how many Gilbert like guys have been waived.

The Kings could also bring up Vincent LoVerde who is earning the league minimum on an NHL contract. That is $575K versus Gilbert's $1.4M AAV.

Waiving Gilbert will not be considered a loss, it just adds to the number of throwaway signings Lombardi made that have really been meaningless. You know, like the time he signed Ethan Moreau and Trent Hunter. He somehow thought those guys were still NHL players in 2011.

None of those summer moves was made to make the team better. There's a reason most were league minimum guys. Purcell and Gilbert, if in the AHL, cost about the league minimum on the cap. Just warm bodies while Lombardi took a breath after the disappointments of the last 2 years.

What he does will all this potential cap space, I have no idea. The West is open for whoever wants it, and if the Kings ever find consistency, they could take it. Been searching for that consistency for about 219 games now. What he has to trade, again, a bit of a question mark. They have maybe a handful of prospects, and the various picks. He has yet to trade anyone that played an important role on either Cup team, so if he were to go for it again this year, I'm not sure he'd start now.

Always better to have cap space options than not have them though, so, there's that.

Gilbert/Purcell/Setoguchi and even Zatkoff were signed to fill gaps for this season only. I think they were signed with the intention of being throwaway deals to get us through the expansion draft

I didn't have high expectations, but you do have to question what Lombardi is doing when none of those signings even resemble NHL players.

It's the very definition of dumpster diving.

per Rosen, he thinks LaDue will get a call up out of this Gilbert reassignment. Im high on LaDue but still shocked

Pretty much, and not their fault no one could beat them in camp.

But per Rosen, he expects LaDue to get the callup!

Its definitely dumpster diving but I understand why he did it. sign a few guys to one year, low AAV deals and hope that they give it everything they've got. worst case scenario is they dont live up to their contracts and theyre done after a season. Id much prefer that line of action as opposed to giving out multi-year, higher AAV contracts when Toffoli/Pearson/etc are gonna need raises AND with the expansion draft looming

I'm sure DL and Sutter talked before waiving Gilbert. I doubt both of them agreed to call up LaDue unless LaDue will be getting playing time. I have a feeling that McNabb will sit some games, and Sutter will roll with the following pairs:

Muzzin-Doughty
Forbort-Martinez
Gravel-LaDue

These pairings have potential, but with so many rookies, I don't expect them to do much in the playoffs (if we even make it).

I was more in favor of giving guys like Mersch and Auger a chance as opposed to signing more dead weight guys.

I guess they're realizing that now with LaDue being brought up and how Gravel came up as well. Better to let them get their feet wet and learn at this level than to waste cap space and roster spots on what Dean Lombardi would classify as "mercenaries."

Nothing to see here. 23 man roster if Toffoli is back & Greene on IR, after Gilbert waived.

Edit: NVM counted Gilbert on the 23 man roster because CapFreindly hasn't moved him yet. That leaves the team 1 short with Toffoli coming back!!!!

lol... it'd be funny if instead of a call up, LaDue was traded. Epic level Troll by Lombardi.

We know how Lombardi does things. He's done it since he got the job. He'll sign place holders every now and then. Sometimes more than now and then. Guys that just buy time, one way or another. Nagy, Calder, McCauley, Thornton, Blake to some extent, Stuart, the list goes on. Moreau was signed to a cheap 1 year deal in mid to late August, and Hunter got a cheap 1 year deal at the end of camp. They were easily gotten rid of when the time came. King and Nolan then get the call, King has a great conference final, and Moreau and Hunter are trivia questions. If things didn't work out that way, the 11-12 season wouldn't have hinged on Moreau and/or Hunter anyway. Same way this year isn't coming down to Purcell, Gilbert, Latta, or Trotman.
