Brown used to draw tons of penalties too. He's pretty much stopped diving.

That started in 2012 vs the Canucks. Their coach called out Brown in the media for diving too much. Refs took notice and the number of calls going Browns way dropped forever. Players started hacking him like crazy and refs turned a blind eye or called him for diving, even when it wasn't. And in a couple of other players getting long term injuries and his physical play was taken away to a degree.
While I am not happy with Brown now, I don't question his heart or desire. His ability is not where his current paycheck demands but I believe he wishes he was playing at a level that he would be considered under paid.

I think this was the turning point:

Yeah the Smith slash diving call blew my mind.

I do remember Brown crushing Perry with a beautiful open ice hit in 2014, only to get jumped by two Ducks, which would have been PERFECT for a PP except they blew the call and evened it up by giving Brown a penalty too, vomit.

Don't forget him crushing Dillon to lead to Pearson's OT goal, too.

They exist, just much fewer and farther between.

Some positives for the roster.

Forbort has been an absolute stud.

Dowd is a decent center, to establish that third line, his best impact though I think is on the PP.

Trevor Lewis is on a career year pace.

Budaj playing his guts out.

Brown looks better, producing ok for his role.

I was disappointed with how Jeff Carter ended last season. Carter has been a Monster this season.

Greene to IR, wonder if he comes back...

Also opens up a roster spot, hopefully for a Toffoli return but maybe they could use it to call Brodz up for a game or two?

One of Brown's biggest skills was drawing penalties. Great at diving but the Kings getting national attention helped put a stop to it. He earned the reputation and once people outside of LA and LA's rivals started to talk about it, the calls stopped.

Also doesn't help that he stopped hitting as much and as hard. That used to lead to retaliation from the other team which Brown would just take without fighting back.

agreed with all of this. Also I have been impressed with Pearson. I was disappointed with his year last year but he seems to finally be back on track from his injury.

I wonder if Greene's injury will end his career. The guy has been missing major time the last few years. Placing him on LTIR until his contract ends would open up decent cap space.

it would be huge for next season!!

If Greene is out for the rest of this season (or not able to play 14 more games this season, which seems unlikely at this point) we will need to make sure to keep McNabb around for the expansion draft. He meets the exposure requirements for a defenseman, no one else we would want to lose does

LA Times reported (Jan 25) his injuries are 'lingering' injuries of his back and groin. GIven the back surgery, his age, physical toll , it might be best for him to retire before he does permanent damage.

Someone pointed out that we could sign Gilbert for 1 year prior to the expansion draft if indeed McNabb were traded. Gilbert still needs 7 more games to reach 70 in last two years.

That's assuming Gilbert wants to sign here. He might go somewhere else looking for a place where he can play more.

Scuderi only needs two.

It does, so needs 2 and one year deal. Not going to happen.

Yeah... give him a deal with a 200k signing bonus paid during the Summer. He gets "banged up" before the season starts and retires.

Gets Scuderi a going away bonus. (probably a 35+ contract so that 200k will stick on the roster)

Kings circumvent draft rules.

We get to laugh at all the HF'ers freaking out about Lombardi's tricks.

Trade McNabb to somewhere like Philly that'll have a ton of D protection spots for some D prospects.

That'll leave the only choice to Vegas being like Shore/Clifford/Nolan/Brown. Then we get to sit there and  as Vegas decides between Brown and 4th liners. If they take Brown we laugh. If they don't we laugh, then cry a little when no one is looking, then laugh more....

How is this bad?

Edit: I love McNabb, but if there's a chance you can force Vegas into taking Brown you trade his ass right ****ing now!

Eventually but it does not appear to be anytime soon. He did practice today but...

Toffoli indicated that he is still feeling some discomfort and that he is working on how to deal with that.

“It’s something I’ve got to get used to,†he noted. “Hopefully, it’s not going to linger. But it’s one of those things where you don’t know what’s going to happen

Yep, most likely. What other forwards would we protect? Unless we make a trade for one, which is a more complicated scenario we covered in trade posts...essentially the problem would be trading a d-man, then having to protect an extra forward, then losing ANOTHER d-man.

Funny how these things evolve so much though. Obviously a lot changes over the course of a season, but collectively we were thinking to protect McNabb over Forbort and mourning the loss of Dowd early on...

Not everyone.
