Before the season started, I doubt anyone had Forbort penciled in as a must protect over McNabb. But I was speaking very generally anyway, of course it wasn't EVERYONE.
In the new NHL a team is only allowed 1 pylon on defense. It wouldn't seem like much but when Gravel sits the D takes a nosedive (its because when he misreads a play he makes up for it with speed and reach -- McNabb and Greene can't do that). Big guys that can play Kings hockey and skate are something to behold. I did point out in July that there was no way Vegas would take McNabb and I still think that (hope I am wrong).
Two games nailed it for me on Forbert, both (wins) in November over Anaheim and Chicago. You could just see the frustration on Perry's face with Forbert covering him (very physically) behind the net. Normally CP, wiggly-worm that he is can just slither out to the front but DF would have none of it.
The second was a play in the Chicago game where DF was along the boards at the blue line and turned around to catch a speedster entering the zone for a wide open shot but he couldn't get a shot off due to DF's quickness and long reach. Only DD (somehow) could have made that play besides DF.
Thankfully DS finally broke up that trainwreck Muzzin/Martinez pairing by realizing how good DF is defensively. The offense will come sooner or later enough. The bad news is he will be very expensive when his contract is up.
