The Swedish teams that got eliminated aren't exactly on a hot streak right now. ;) Considering they are currently in 8th, 9th and 12th place in the SHL we probably shouldn't be surprised.

This is funny, on the Swiss side, their is no correlation. Zug is presently first, and was eliminated ... on the other side, Fribourg is dead last with huge problems ... yet they made it thru. Davos has huge problems ... and was in line with what they are in championship ... namely a team that lost most of its good players over summer and has a complete rebuild to go through without top players. Main weak spot : the goalie.

I guess Linköping would be the exception among the Swedish teams. They are also struggling in the SHL (10th place), but did advance here. Perhaps because they got to play Davos who have been struggling too.

Tappara(1st) vs SaiPa(13th) is the same situation! Some Teams don t have the focus to CHL.

Sad for the Czechs ... on 3 teams ... 2 meet in 16th. pity.

++

good news ... new record of attendance in Bern 13,669 spectators. :yo:

The expected top teams are underperforming heavily so the lesser teams are shining right now...like HV, Malmö and Karlskrona

Malmö and Karlskrona are the major surprises at the moment. Wasn't that long ago HV71 won the SHL. Has Karlskrona won an SHL(elitserien) title ever? Malmö probably way back in the day.

Tappara have Savinainen injured and hes been good in Liiga this season. Tehir offense has been lacking since it happened.
Then again, you look at how Tappara finished in Liiga (2012-13: 2nd, 2013-14: 2nd, 2014-15: 2nd, 2015-16: 1st, 2016-17: ?) and compare that to how they got eliminated in the first round of CHL playoffs every year it's been held. Makes me question how much motivation they really had for this tournament.

HV71 last win was in 2010, after that they've gone downhill. They have almost the same team as last season in which they failed to reach even the playoffs.

This is Karlskronas second year (ever)in SHL. They finished dead last last season and on paper they look a little better this season. They still have one of the lowest budgets in the league.

I'll be honest here, SHL has gone downhill the recent years. It was good to have SAIKs dominant game few years ago and frölunda was really good last year. We have no such teams this season. It kinda blows

My teams often plays 1 period really good and then they go idle mode, also the defense sucks. Linköping which was praised before the start of the season look like absolute garbage. SAIK, altho suffer lots of injuries, look like a joke compared to its former self. Frölunda look nowhere near as good as last season. I can see a team no one expecting winning the SHL.

No other team in the world has as many drafted players by the NHL as Frölunda. Sweden and the SHL as a whole produce a steady stream of talented players and the number increases every year. Swedish hockey is fine and the SHL is fine

don't you have a town called Örnsköldsvik where you have a record number of high flyer hockey players that come from ?

We do, bit that town doesn't have an SHL team anymore. They were demoted last season.

Anyway.... I was looking at the schedule for the round of 16 and noticed that Linköping have to start at home against HIFK (which the lower seeded team does). Anyone know what they base the seeding on? Linköping won their group with the maximum 12 points and HIFK finished second in theirs with only 4 points. Linköping is also higher in the CHL rankings. HIFK did have better results in Liiga last season than Linköping had in the SHL however (but so did Davos in the round of 32 and Linköping was seeded ahead of them).

Or is there something else that prevents the games from being played in the proper order?

Could be something like the other arena being in use at the time so they swapped the games or something.

All of the remaining countries have a team representing their capital in the CHL playoffs except for Sweden. Don't know what that says but find it interesting.
