Shame that we injured two guys, but apart from that I realy liked how we hit in that game. That physical play was huge boost to the game.

That game had everything. Intend to watch the broadcast after work since I might have missed out on some awesome tidbits from my vantage point in the arena.

Latest on KHL involvment in CHL: Rotenberg says they have offered CHL one or two games between respective champions. They also declined a similar offer made from the NHL.

It is not so easy. KHL would accept some kind of deal with CHL only if there were clear benefits for KHL. CHL is played during IIHF break/EHT. KHL wont trade EHT for participation in CHL. The same with KHL schedule. As I know CHL offered to KHL to join in quaterfinals, KHL cannot do it due to reasons I wrote earlier. KHL´s offer is to play one or two games among CHL winner and KHL clubs. KHL wants to find out if there are some (financial and others) benefit for KHL. KHL has been preparing new strategy of development, the league wont make any change before the strategy is approved. CHL introduced its schedule for next season. So no cooperation earlier than 18/19 season.

How do you interpret KHL's offer to the CHL? Are they softening up to the idea of participating in the CHL? And if os, why?

It seems as if they have changed their strategy from expanding the league to the west to, instead, focus on the markets closer to home and to the east. The Croatian teams exit from the league is an embarrassment for the KHL. I'm sure they have learned a few lessons from that and want to emphasize stability and economical viability. I don't believe we will see any aggressive expansion of the KHL in the near future, as a result. Certainly not to the west. KHLs hands are tied if the national leagues say no and there are no signals whatsoever that the concerned national leagues have softened up to the KHL, in this regard..

In my eyes the creation of the CHL was in direct response to the KHL and the threat they posed to the individual national leagues. It also signaled an ambition to integrate the leagues and is basically the formation of an alliance. I believe that all the bigger clubs of Europe, who do not consider joining the KHL as an option, see the CHL as the start of an inevitable and necessary step to create a pan European league outside Russian control.

KHL has not changed its attitude towards CHL. KHL current strategy (approved in Feb 2015, so in 1st CHL season) says that "CHL is not real/true league at the moment and is not alternative for european clubs joining KHL or playing in national championships" By real/true league they mean that CHL is not succesor of national championships with ambition to create one pan-euro league (like KHL wants). Briza, CHL Board member, said that main idea of CHL was to create such one league. I think that even Briza does not believe his own words. The same KHL strategy say that KHL should develop relationship with CHL but must protect interests of KHL and its clubs. And KHL has been doing it (therefore rejecting CHL offer about quarterfinal).

KHL Strategy is not only about expansion, it is more complex. I think KHL will expand to Europe, but there wont be "crazy ideas" as before. They will do it like with Jokerit - nobody expected it, all rumours were about Karpat or Espoo. Of course KHL wont accept every club, they will select among them.

I dont think CHL will become some kind of one pan-euro league for clubs who dont consider KHL as option. It is simple, CHL has not money for that and CHL leadership is not able to get money for the project. Medvedev was able to get money for such league (KHL) as Gazprom Deputy Chairman. CHL does not have such guys behind the project. Plus we have to take into consideration that national championships have big tradition, the problem was to create CHL, not to mention one pan-euro league. I am sure Swedes would never approve it. Czechs the same. Dont know about Suiss and Germans.

Latest on CHL v. KHL

Now the CHL's sporting manager, Bo "Kulon" Lennartsson, confirm to SVT Sport that they have submitted a proposal to the KHL to provide two teams from the league a spot directly to the CHL playoffs. They would thus avoid the six (?) Regular season games.
- This is a proposal from us and they have until the end of April to respond, says Kulon to SVT Sport.

KHL replied during weekend, see

It is not understandable why the CHL leadership keeps declaring their readiness to accept the KHL teams in their competition, even talking about deadlines. This creates needless hype and answers from media, even though we, the KHL, have explained our position on the topic more than once. KHL´s participation in the CHL would not bring any major benefits for the KHL, but would be additional burden (for our clubs). The KHL teams are not interested in participation in the CHL, at any stage.

The KHL is the strongest league in Eurasian continent, the league is successful project from sport, financial, organizational and others point of view. Now we have been considering several applications from new clubs. There is an interest from European and Asian clubs to become a member of the KHL. The most important criteria is level of the players and financial stability. These conditions are forecasted by new development strategy of the league.

Dmitry Chernyshenko, KHL President

The CHL made the offer in early March or even earlier. Fasel was in St.Peterburg last week to watch SKA game. He was seen with Medvedev, Chernyshenko and Roman Rotenberg in the same VIP. Then Bo made the statement for SVT and KHL replied.

That's a shame. Strange that Kulon would mention this to the media if KHL have been clear from the start what their stance is on participating in the CHL. Maybe it was a counter offer to KHLs invite for the CHL and KHL champions to square off?

Maybe CHL management is too naive? They have no clue how to negotiate with Russians. Do you remember how CHL refused Jokerit´s participation (as KHL club) in CHL? Because "we dont want to promote KHL´s expansion to Europe." When CHL management is talking about KHL, they think of Russian clubs only. That is a mistake. Another mistake is this latest deadline. How can you come to Russians and give them a deadline? It is not how it works .... Kulon or Baumann are not on par with Medvedev or Timchenko by their influence (not only in sport/hockey world). That is a reason why they always send Fasel to negotiate with them. If CHL management does not change their policy, I see no cooperation between CHL and KHL. I can imagine a trade - we, KHL, will join but you will allow XY European club to join KHL. But is CHL ready to do this? And does KHL need their help?

The Finns were pissed at Jokerit and rightfully so. If Jokerit were expecting a warm welcome into the CHL family they were mistaken.

I believe it was merely due to having to set next seasons schedule that they had to put a deadline.

Does KHL need the help of CHL to annex clubs from the west? Is that your question? What?
A western team will join the KHL if and only if the KHL can find a suitable and willing candidate and get the blessing of said teams national federation as well as the IIHF. They could always start a new team. However, that hasn't turned out very well in the past.

If they want KHL on board, they need to calm down and not to be pissed at Jokerit.

As I said earlier, the KHL wont make any decision during the season as CHL has expected. If you want to make a deal with the KHL, you need to understand Russian mentality, which is a problem for CHL.

Clubs are not a problem, blessing from federation is. But yes, CHL has little to no influence on anything, so hoping they can influence various national federations is naive from me.

And you already expressed here that russian mentality. CHL does not even want to have influence on national federations to push them to let some clubs go to KHL. Does soccer Champions league do this agenda? Your mentality is probably just about influence and opportunism.

do anyone know who get the playoff winner/finalist spot if Bern is in the final and already in champion league ?

and also if anyone know why no Italy this year ?

The qualification for these places is set out in the rules as follows:

1 National league champion (SCB, EVZ or HCD)

2 Regular season winners (SCB)

3 Regular season runner up (ZCS)

4 Losing play-off finalist (SCB, EVZ or HCD)

5 Higher regular season ranked losing semi-finalist (EVZ or HCD)

6 Lower regular season ranked losing semi-finalist (HCL)

7 Third placed team in regular season (EVZ)

8 Fourth placed team in regular season (LHC)

9 Fifth placed team in regular season. (HCD)

So, this year there's no need to go further than point 5, to get the four teams. SCB, ZCS, EVZ and HCD should be qualified already. (Even though I haven't seen an official confirmation yet).

The only Italian club that ever played in CHL, qualified in EBEL. And this year they reduced the number of clubs.
