WJC: 2016 — Finland Roster Talk

Jalonen should put Rantanen with Kapanen to see how that goes, That could maybe help Kapanen.
He's already said that's exactly what he intends to, with Hintz in the middle.

In fact, he's pretty much fessed up the entire offensive lineup already.

Rantanen - Hintz - Kapanen
Laine - Aho - Puljujärvi
Saarela - Nättinen - Repo
Lammikko - Siikonen - Björkqvist

And as far as those number rankings go, I'd say we stand at...

G: 4
D: 3,5
F: 4,5

And with Jalonen at the helm, he might just be enough to add another .5 to our back end.

Finland has tallest team in tournament and it's really big. Average height is 187.09cm (and if you leave goaldenders out, then it's more bigger) and it's not often that any team in WJC has full of team that big guys. :yo:  Especially Finland team is almost always full of midgets.

Lines in practice.

Rantanen - Hintz - Kapanen
Laine - Aho - Puljujärvi
Lammikko - Nättinen - Saarela
Björkqvist - Siikonen - Repo

Looks like Jalonen has decided to spread the wealth a bit. With Repo in the 4th, every line is technically a scoring threat. Although I have to say, I'm not sure who's supposed to be the go-to-guy in the 3rd, as it consists of three guys who usually play center. Well, Lammikko and Saarela are pretty good all-around players and especially Saarela has a wicked shot, but still.

Laine-Aho-Puljujärvi-Saarela-Juolevi
Kapanen-Hintz-Rantanen-Repo-Saarijärvi

Powerplay lines. That first PP.. damn.
Hmm. I wonder who's gonna be the playmaker in Aho's unit, likely either him or Saarela. It's curious that the 2nd best pure dish-the-puck type, I mean Nättinen, is not having a role here.

Not criticism though, just observation. There's little reason to question Jalonen at this stage.

Yes, it is. Criticism! Those PP units are a disgrace! Where is Nattinen?? In my pool roster! LOL

Keskitalo-Saarijärvi
Tuulola-Juolevi
Niku-Mikkol
Sopanen
There's the first "surprise", I guess. While the numbering of these pairings in a system where everyone's going to get their fair share of minutes is even more trivial than those of the forward lines, many would probably have thought it mental if someone had claimed Keskitalo, who was mostly considered a contender for 7th D, is going to start the games in the top unit. Guess Jalonen liked what he saw from that pair on Tuesday.

As far as the lack of Nättinen on PP goes, I'm guessing Jalonen doesn't want to mix'n'match excessively between the special teams and 5on5 units. Likely on Aho's unit, we're going to see Aho on half wall, Pulju in front of net and Laine as the point shooter, while Juolevi will naturally man the blueline at the tip of the bottom triangle and Saarela acts as the secondary defensive player/blueline shooter. Aho would not be so useful on any of the other slots, so to bring Nättinen in would pretty much mean replacing them head-to-head. Which would lead to shuffling the lines for a shift or two once the PP's run its course.

Haha, I have three of the players on that first PP in my pool roster. :P

Anyways, good luck finns. Just not if you play against Sweden.

I think Aho will play on the side of the net and goes in front of the goalie if needed. Saarela and Laine as shooters on both points. Juolevi will have a huge role on the playmaking. Puljujärvi in the middle.

-------------------Aho--
----------Puljujärvi------------
Laine-------------------Saarela
------------Juolevi--------------

Other unit is pretty simple Hintz stand in front of the net and Rantanen passes the puck to Repo/Kapanen/Saarijärvi who are all available for onetimers

---------------Hintz-------------------
Repo---------Kapanen------Rantanen
-------------Saarijärvi------------

Hey guys, is there any official information about who will be the no1 goaltender? Kahkonen or Vehvilainen?

So basically the Finns are gonna tear up this year? :D

It's a bit early to say. Of course it is possible. But it has to be remembered the first unit has two 17-year olds, and an 18 year old center, the second unit/line has 19-year-olds but other than Rantanen, doesn't really have top end talent.

Unless the 17-year-old wingers show up on the scoresheet regularly, Finland isn't going to tear up this tournament. And usually in U20 competition it isn't the best position to be in, relying on 17 year olds. Puljujarvi for example needs to score points on top of looking constantly dangerous scoring threat (he did look good in last years tournament but didn't get that many points). I'm most sold on Laine being an above point per game player, but I don't see a "Teravainen" as in a surefire 2PPG player on the team, the tournament is a year or two too early for Laine-Puljujarvi to really light it up at that level. I'm hoping Rantanen could be that guy, but I don't know if he (especially with his linemates) has it in him. I'm afraid Kapanen will be a bit of an anchor on that line both offensively and defensively, Hintz will carry his weight.

Last year Rantanen did what one man can do single handedly for his team and I strongly believe he will be a beast this year. Anything that linemates can contribute is pure bonus

I'm still not convinced Finland will come out of that group ahead of Russia...their D was pretty weak in the pre-tournament games

I'm pretty sure you saw neither of those games. And you obviously didn't study the stat sheet either. The players with the most minuses from those games have been cut.

Someone calculated that Finnish skaters average height is 187.5cm (6'1'') and weight 86.95kg (191.6 lbs). Damn this is a big team. Lower if goaltenders are counted but still 187.09cm and 85.83kg.

Yes, and i saw is the biggest team for every "big" country had has in WJC between 2000-2015, at least height wise.

It would be very difficult to any team try to stop Finland big forwards when they come full speed in offensive zone or opposites goal area. Also at least Rantanen, Laine and Puljujärvi it's not only big, but also full of skills and other else our big forwards (Hinz, Nättinen, Lammikko) has good skill set, then there is other forwards - not that big but they are full of skills like Aho, Kapanen, Saarela and Repo. :yo:
