WJC: 2016 — Finland Roster Talk

Maybe Jalonen could test Aho with Rantanen, have a great 2way line or Laine with Rantanen, have a heavy line with a sniper.

Rantanen and Hintz played together last year and it seems like Laine-Aho-Pulju is a complete line already.

One of the first things right now is to see the final roster. Jalonen doesn't shy away making some bold cuts if he sees something in some supposedly "lesser" name.

I've a pretty safe feeling all the supposed names are gonna be there, but still... these are gonna be some long hours 'til 10am (EET) tomorrow when the final roster is apparently released.

As said by others before me, I also want to follow couple rules and rest doesn't matter that much to me.
-Puljujärvi and Laine in different lines.
-Kapanen in different line than Laine, Pulju or Rantanen. Only in PP Kapanen could be combined with them if it seems like Kapanen starts the tournament well.

Laine-Hintz-Rantanen
Saarela-Aho-Pulju
X-Nättinen-Kapanen

I would say that Rantanen is a better space maker for Laine that Pulju and we can have Pulju more focused in the goal scoring like this.

People really need to cut Kapanen some slack. He was good tonight, and IMO deserves to start in the top unit.

Whether he'll stick there is of course another story, but this hate is getting out of hand. Typical mass stupidity, if you ask me. It becomes especially evident if you bother to study the numbers a little. Kapanen has really only been bad when the entire team's been more or less bad. But because he's often been the "face" of that team, it's been nailed on him and him alone. If you wanna draw conclusions, you could say that leader type he is not. But a bad player? Not by any means.

Luckily, he doesn't have to be the go-to-guy here, so he can concentrate on using his strengths.

Rantanen-Hintz-Kapanen and Puljujärvi-Aho-Laine pretty much confirmed lines.
Well, there we have it. Didn't even have to wait 'til Boxing Day.

Rantanen - Hintz - Kapanen
Laine - Aho - Puljujärvi
Saarela - Nättinen - Repo
Björkqvist - Siikonen - Lammikko

Book it.

I never said they would not be able to compete. Let me clarify. Finland has a very good team, in my opinion them, they are in the top 3 with Canada and the US. However, in my opinion, their defence and goaltending will let them down in the end, thus preventing them from winning it all.

Canada does not have any top end talent this year. However they have a lot of depth.

What i've watched for Canada's roster it's pretty damn good.
There's Marner,Strome,Virtanen, Fleury, Sanheim, Gauthier, Chartier, Beauvillier,Stephens,Barzal etc.

So scoring shouldn't be problem for Canada.
Only area where Canada might lacks is goalies.

And that how Canada transited in bigger rink and ice.
Medal round games will hosted in Hartwall Arena there's bigger rink and ice than Helsinki Ice Hall where's smaller ice and hybrid rink.

That might cause some troubles for Canada.
But we'll see that when medal round games starts

Why Jalonen dude insists on forcing Pulju and Laine in the same line. It won't give any synergies but rather cuts down Pulju's effieciency and scoring and will wear on him and his moral.

There is a silent and audible rivalry between them aswell; and them playing in the same line won't help getting the best out of the rivalry but rather the worst.

Jalonen, wake the **** up!

*** Hintz just 1 goal,4 assists (15)this season for HIFK,
why he should be the first line center?

Cause he has history last year with Rantanen and Kapanen, he was also injured when season start, so it's not easy just start to product points immediately. Every HIFK fans says Hintz has been very good and he is a different maker. He is Finnish team best all-around player with Aho, he won almost always corner battles and he has excellent speed and skating, he is big guy who use his body and give very heavy hits opponents all the time. He is very energy player, who has good hands, IQ and can give very good passes, but he is still more straightforward player and don't give idiot passes in offensive zones, if he have good place he shoot before try to find some awkward passes to maybe better placed player. He's face off percentage in National team is also over 60%. He is also Captain and he has big influence on and off ice to whole team. And it's 1 goal, 5 assist in 14 games.

That's why.

I agree. If they hadn't produced points today it would've been a no brainer to separate them in my opinion but Jalonen has been stubborn before so who knows.

I'm just feeling that instead of 3 scoring lines we are ending up with 2, and don't like that, thought it was going to be our strenght this year.

But atleast we have time to do changes to them.

How about no.
Yes you do have, and quality depth.

I agree, Puljujarvi and Laine on the same line just doesn't work as well as it sounds. Sebastian Aho however is perfect with Laine or Puljujarvi.

If the supposed third line really is Saarela-Nättinen-Repo that showed flashes of brilliance on Monday, it very much fills the requirements of a third scoring unit.

But I have to admit, ATM I'm a bit worried that Repo's lackluster effort last night hurt his chances of making the team. I hope not, but I guess we'll know in a couple of hours. It might be wanton pessimism, but it seems to be the norm these days that you get one shock cut, and the rest of the designated top-9 seem to be safe.

Oh well, couple more hours and we'll know.

Again, everything's relative. For a Canadian, it may seem that they don't have all that much top end talent. It's an even group, and a deep one, but the supposed top prospect is still missing.

In a similar manner, for a Finn, our team appears pretty damn stacked - while in head-to-head comparison our troop and Canada's probably more or less even out.

What are Marner& Strome if not elite prospects, one of top prospects in the World outside the NHL?

They're good, but not McDavid/Eichel/Matthews kind of good, which may be a bit underwhelming. For a Canadian, I mean. Especially since the tournament also features individuals who may be even a bit better, like Willy Nylander and our very own Rantanen.

I see no reason to call 'em anything but high end talent, but like I said, it's a matter of perspective.

So, the plane has landed safely and Mikko Rantanen has arrived at Helsinki & will join the team at Hartwall Arena 10 am, albeit not yet on the ice.

Now, let's just hope he doesn't stub his toe onto the doorstep as he walks into the locker room. #antijinx

Exactly as everyone predicted. Good job Jalonen.

No real suprises there. Happy that they didn't cut out Repo (not sure if he was ever on the chopping block however). Guess no double underagers this time around. The team does look good on the paper, no way around it.

While you seem to get surprise picks and shock cuts whenever they release the men's team for whichever tournament, U20 squads have been more stable deals lately. Last time we had a controversy was when Juuso Ikonen was cut from the 2013 team (and Bilbo Järveläinen made it in).

Jalonen is not above getting "ideas", but yeah, it sure is a relief not having to interpret any here.

Projected lineup:

Kähkönen (starter)
Vehviläinen (backup)
Larmi (reserve)

Niku - Saarijärvi
Juolevi - Tuulola
Mikkola - Sopanen
Keskitalo

Rantanen - Hintz - Kapanen
Laine - Aho - Puljujärvi
Saarela - Nättinen - Repo
Björkqvist - Siikonen - Lammikko
Kalapudas

Now... let the games begin.
