Not sure what you're seeing in Sanheim, he's the most offensively capable defenseman they have

Well he's basically the only one who goes riverboat gambler, i'll give you that, but there are a couple problems there. First of all, quite often his risks outweigh the potential rewards and secondly he's unsuccessful. His defensive play is not very good to boot and when you add it all up he's not going to be highly rated.

Very interested in seeing the lineup today. Lowry can give his team a shot or set them up for failure, and I'm expecting the latter.

TBH I think the most important factor will be to play with control and not take undisciplined penalties. We have the skill to hang with anyone 5 on 5, but simply can't afford to put teams on the PP based on our sub par PK.

We haven't come close to playing our best yet, and despite that we were right there with US until the end, and held our own against Sweden 5 on 5 (they used the PPs to beat us). Any small overall gains combined with not taking dumb penalties and you can argue we might even have the edge over these teams based on our performances.

^^This.^^

And a lead. We need a lead.

I'm not going to start a drawn-out discussion about my team's player, but all I'll say here is that Sanheim hasn't been on the ice for a goal against yet. And his "riverboat gambler" style works extremely well on the Hitmen, so I'm pretty confused where and when you've reached the conclusion that "quite often his risks outweigh the potential rewards".

Not to mention that he and Dermott are inexplicably being started predominantly in the defensive zone by Lowry. But I digress on that point.

It sure does.
Not so good for Canada against the best kids in the world, unfortunately.

My conclusion on risks outweighing potential rewards is based on watching him play and recognizing on-ice and in game situations. What else is there to reach conclusions from?

Empirical data? Like the fact that he hasn't been on the ice for a goal against all tournament long? Is that not relevant?

Didn't want to start a separate thread for this...

Can someone who's watched all the games rank Canada's 7 d-men based on their play in the tournament so far? Thanks.

Sanheim was pretty bad the last game against Sweden.

Dermott
Chabot

Fleury

Sanheim
Hicketts

Hickey
Mckeown

This is just what I think personally. Hicketts had a nice game in there, followed by some pretty poor games. Same with Sanheim. They're the disappearing but sometimes flashy type.

Lowry's new plan: We're the underdogs.

We're ****ed.

You always know the coach is out of answers when he starts pulling out the jedi mind tricks and works the media more than actually attempting to come up with some kind of a workable game plan for the opposition and preparing his players to play that game plan. This coach is now in Steve Spott territory of ineptitude.

Hopefully similar to the Russians, not caring in round robin and only coming out to perform when the games mean something.

our d-men wont be able to handle those two finns! we couldn't even handle the Swedes :shakehead:shakehead

Spott did less with more, and made some terrible decisions in forming the roster and utilizing his players, but the game-to-game tactics and player management have been just as bad, and the on-ice play have been much worse under Lowry. I loss today will certainly cement his legacy.

According to MacKenzie Lowry is planning on matching up the Strome-Virtanen-Crouse line against the Finnish line that has ripped apart this tournament. A recipe for disaster IMO. Not sure why Stephens and Konecny aren't matched up against them with Crouse. Lowry must have seen the ridiculous Strome "chess master" piece on TSN and figures he'll do a good job. And I'll never understand why he's so enamoured with Virtanen.

Some coaches will draw the under dog card for example to play some mind games, (bob Hartley using that in his playoffs last year against van and anahiem) and sometimes other teams using it when they feel their team is literally the under dog, their backs against the wall etc etc because they are actually.......... The weaker team.

They are actually the weaker team. The fact that a team canada coach has to pull the under dog card is flat out disgraceful. We are stacked with 1st rounders, I don't care for the 2 Finns, we also have strome and marner how the hell is this team underperforming is really beyond me.

Hoping for a wild game in the Canada v Finland. I have a feeling Canada is going to come out flying, at least I'm hoping they will.

Our backs are totally against the wall.
