Never draft goalies high.
In fact don't draft goalies at all. Plenty of goalies available every year whether its through free agency or trade. No need to waste a draft pick on a guy who (fingers crossed) will turn into a capable player at his position 5-7 years down the road.
I'm a big fan of the
"draft european goalies in the 5/6/7 rounds, and let them stew in their respective European leagues until their eligibility is almost up and see what you have after 4 years" strategy.
I mean, you retain your European drafted players rights for 4 years instead of the regular 2 for North Americans, and goalies need WAY more time to develop properly... and in fact, I'd even say that you can't accurately judge a goalie at 18 anyways... and maybe even at 20. Not the same way you'd evaluate skaters, at the very least.
Just draft one Euro goalie per year in the later rounds... you'll have a much better success rate with later picks, and the goalies that "hit" in the 6th round are usually as good as the goalies who "hit" in the 3rd round. If there's one position in hockey where there are more good players than jobs, it's in the crease.
I dunno. It just makes sense to me. Use a top-90 pick on a goalie ONLY if you're convinced that they are the greatest thing since sharpened skates.
