Tarasenko is 220lbs. He is an absolute tank.
A bad choice he did really well at the combine my point is he has insane skill before size. Guys with size and only size are so ineffective in the NHL. Look at guys like the three I mentioned Bickell, Penner, and Lucic and how quickly fan bases can turn on a player, if you put the idea of playing with size first.
I don't think you don't need size, but make sure you account for ability to skate well, have some skill, ect. This is #16 in a deep draft If you took the 2015 stanley cup champs hawks
Yea guys like Toews, Seabrook, Saad, are bigger, but in the same sense they have average guys who have just strength. L.A. has bigger guys but skill in kopitar, carter (big guys) its skill, and they have guys who wear you down but they don't trade for it high in the draft (leave it to your 3rd, 4th round picks) and they don't trade for it.
Let's say that we keep the pick and the player busts, then what? This is not an exact science and **** happens. There's no reason why we can't be competing for the playoffs the season after next and with some solid acquisitions and some luck maybe even this season. Did anyone expect Calgary to make the postseason?
This comes more down to Oiler draft history. Its like the 2003 draft all over again, its a frightening thought, deep draft historically now and they get a guy who isn't even in the league anymore.
A competent scouting staff should find a guy in the draft that will be in the lineup and add depth down the road. Is this about creating a team to win for years, and years or just for one year.
I just think you need to see a team competitive enough this season to see who really is worth keeping even on this roster.
A) we don't know even now from this core who we feel is made for playoffs and eventually winning a cup; good management will figure this out
B) are we trading for a guy now (experience) that in a few years won't be on the team, and that developed pick is more valuable.
C) are we making lateral or forward moves. Most recent trades (deadline, july 1st, ect) most have been lateral moves ex. st. louis - callahan, (lateral)
http://www.nhl.com/ice/eventhome.htm?location=/deadline/2015/experience every trade on here sucks, and the player the team got for picks (they probably were better with the picks) and a lot of overpaying (hello philly)
As for July 1st, this year (not talking forwards) just d and goaltending
First off guys like Hamilton, Larsson are
huge overpays. Mike Green vet but over pay.
http://thehockeywriters.com/3-unrestricted-free-agents-the-edmonton-oilers-must-pursue/
This is a list of some guys that are out there
Secondly, your not going to get any teams, #1-2 d-men so OEL, or Seth Jones, Weber, Yandle so don't be throwing out #16 unless in 3-4-5 years he is still here. Look again at the list above the over pay for a d-man not your own is a huge over pay.
Me personally I would like a guy like Franson out of Nashville, Sekera for L.A. is intriguing and Talbot (NYR), and Anderson out of Ottawa,
Most of these guys you can get with later picks (2nd, 3rd), futures (the goalies) and/or just signing (the d-men) If this was the guys they got I would consider it a success.
At some point Nurse will be in the lineup (i think he's that ready) Klefbom, Marincin, Fayne, and Ference will be there
The rest of the d not on that list gone. Move out Scrivens, and Fasth.
Forwards I dont' see a Brad Richards, or St. Louis, or even Sharp, Justin Williams being that worthwhile.
