I know all of Canada is all over McDavid, and they'll show you a few thousand highlights reel goals to prove the point, but so WHAT if a kid can go around and between kids his own age, which happens when you play junior hockey, and are advanced. It can remind you of the ice mite at age four that could go coast to coast. I've watched Eichel play quite a bit, and his skating, ease of play, playmaking, and pure talent are amazing as well. What he did this year at BU playing against mostly kids that were 3-5 years older than him was very good. I think McDavid is more like the Hall or Yakapov mold. Eichel is more the Tavares mold. I really believe getting Eichel will be great for Buffalo.

I agree with your assessment of Eichel and also think that the Sabres are going to be stoked to have him as their #1c. Nothing against McDavid and yes he got tons of media in Canada especially so in eastern Canada but of the two I would be happier with Eichel. Not calling McDavid soft but Eichel plays a style more in line with Gary Roberts/Kieth Primeau only with a bit more talent and at C. I wouldn't call him a power forward but I would say that he is going to be a tough as nails get it done leader who takes his team with him and that is more in line with what I like to see then a really slick elite talented forward which is how I see McDavid developing.

I was having a few when I posted, and I don't want to take anything from the McDavid kid, but there is some truth to my post. As a footnote, I guess we'll see Eichel at the Worl Hockey in CZ. Should he impress, I think it could make Edmonton think twice for about a second, and then take the Canadian kid. I don't think PR wise they have a choice.

I agree, with as heavily as McD has been pushed on the Canadian public (along with his play) I don't think that even the Oilers can screw that pick up though if there is one team that could it would be them.

Oh yeah, if the Oilers took Eichel over McDavid...RIP fanbase

Since we seem to only take players from the OHL... and I for one will be irate if we take a defenseman... I think we end up with either Pavel Zacha or Travis Konecny at pick 13. Since Travis played for Ottawa you would have to think they saw him a lot while watching Alex Lintuniemi and Middleton.

You take the best player available at the spot. The prospect could always be traded for what the roster needs down the road. If that player is a Defender(BPA), Lombardi/Futa will pick a defender.

You would really prefer Eichel? Hmm, I dunno if you have seen McDavid in person but I have and while Eichel should have a fantastic career, McDavid is one of those generational type players you simply do not pass up.

In watching him, about 6-7 times this year, most recently versus London in the playoffs last week, he just looked better every game, his vision is superb, skating seems effortless and he does have a bit of a mean streak to him.

It's really a no brainer choice for 1st overall.

McDavid certainly has more talent no doubt but Eichel plays an equally more significant all in style of game. Gretzky was the greatest offensive hockey player of all time but Messier won more cups. I guess it is a preference of style. I have seen McDavid play in person a couple of times this year and more last year, he is right there with Crosby at the same age but I also got to see Eichel play a bunch this season and I think that many people are discounting his game in favor of the more recognized McDavid. Both will be great one likely more successful. If I were a gm picking 1st overall I would take McDavid, but I would want Eichel just as much.

Kind of reminds me of the situation back with Stamkos/Doughty. Both equally impactful players, but when does the team picking first overall ever not go with the top rated pick?

I'm still having a lot of trouble wrapping my head around what the Kings did in 2003. I'm not a professional scout by any means, but outside of Brown they are taking chances on guys like Tambellini and Boyle when there are guys like Corey Perry and Shea Weber sitting there. I just don't understand stuff like that in the first round. A lot of us were scratching our heads with the Hickey pick in 2007, but that draft class was not nearly as deep as '03. Going against the grain seems a lot better suited for the later rounds.

Again, cups mean nothing in terms of drafting a player. Mike Keane won three Stanley Cups and Mario Lemieux won two. Why? Because of the team around the player. If Eichel wins more cups than McDavid its likely because of who he is with, not because he's the better player.

And if McDavid is 'right there with Crosby' but you would take Eichel anyway, are you saying Eichel is potentially better than Crosby?

Though the team needs speed and skill, I have a feeling the club will trade down a few spots (i.e. 16th or 17th), draft right handed Dman Brandon Carlo, and attain an extra 2nd rounder in '16.

Brandon Carlo Right D 11/26/1996 6.05 196 Tri-City WHL

He could end up being the next Shea Weber or the next Never Play in the NHL guy.

From mynhldraft.com:

An absolute monster out on the ice and skates extremely well for his size…a good powerful skating stride and displays good lateral mobility…a mean, nasty, physical player… looks to jump up into the rush and push the offensive pace…possesses a hard shot and does a good job getting himself into shooting positions…good offensive instincts to go with his skating and snarl…ability to make some big body checks…a big minute muncher who plays both sides of the puck…physically he is almost NHL ready. (December 2014)

If they go Dman I'd rather them go after Roy or Kylington. But I'm thinking they go after Zacha or Konecny

You have taken what I wrote out of context. I even said in my post "if I were an nhl gm I would draft McDavid". Pretty obvious position. That said who would you rather have for the entirety of their careers, Gretzky or Messier? Of course if you were a gm and they were both available to you it is obvious you would take 99 but that doesn't mean that Messier should be valued as being a significantly lesser player. 99 won cups with Messier on his team and that was it. Messier won cups without 99 on his team. It is like I said, both Eichel and McDavid look like they will be special players and if I were a gm I would draft McDavid but that doesn't mean I wouldn't want Eichel for other reasons. I hope that clears it up.

Those are all safe choices. I like Konecny especially. And there is a chance C Barzal falls to 13. He had injuries to deal with this past season. If he does drop, i'd snap him up.

I only wish Konecny was two inches taller. Love the way he plays the game balls out every shift.

If our scounting staff believes Zacha is the real deal, I wouldn't be surprised to see them trade up to get him. The kid is big, hits everyone, has speed and can score. Big centers are tough to find too.

The three or four teams drafting in front of us, boards are wanting him too, so he looks popular unfortunately.

It's all about the second round for us anyway; second is like a first for us.

I'd be shocked to see the Kings trade up. Prices are gonna be astronomical for this draft. Moving from 13 to 11 would probably cost a second-round pick.

Is it too late for a growth spurt?

I'm going to throw Paul Bittner's name out as someone we may be targeting. He's a big LW and he plays for Jamie Kompon's team.

A big-bodied power forward that plays with tenacity and an edge. Relentless on the forecheck and is able to bully his way to the net with his size and speed. Has a good stick around the net and has an accurate rocket of a shot. Thinks the game well and is able to frustrate opposing players while playing physically. All-in-all, an impact player that uses his size and skill to his advantage. Gaining consistency will be integral to his future success - See more at: http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=216874#sthash.Rg4jqwLv.dpuf

Why go for a D? Kings are set for many years with this core, assuming Sekera will be resigned. And there are already Forbort, Gravel, Miller... in the minors waiting for a job. Kings need more players like Toffoli and Pearson and some center with a top 6 potential. Other than Zykov and Kempe I don't see any forwards with top 6 potential.

I really like Timo Meier or Konecny.

Personally, I feel like it's time for the Kings to move away from the power forward model. There are a ton of those guys in this draft like Greenway, Bittner, and Nicolas Roy.

Would anyone trade down if it meant packaging Richards?
Maybe to Buffalo for their later first round pick?
I think I would be ok with it.
