Eichel is not in the same stratosphere with McDavid as a prospect. There is no comparison. The way their names are used interchangeably around here is a joke. To pick #2 this spring will be an incredible disappointment.

* Note: hasn't watched Eichel

I love Girgs, but I think there is an emotional attachment here that outweighs his value. I suspect that if Tim could get McDavid, he would part with him, albeit while crying like a baby.

That being said, I wouldn't consider doing it, as I love Eichel with our potential depth over the long-term.

On the surface, Eichel+Girgs is too much to pay IMO. But, given we're a few years away from really competing, and we have Reinhart in the stable, I could see an argument for it. I don't think I'd do it though.

I promise you a team will ask for either him or Risto. Wouldn't you? You'd want the best we have.

Agree and was adding that I wouldn't do it either while you were posting.

I would hate to see a core piece dealt when things are coming along so nicely, especially when dealing what would be a major package for a very uncertain incremental improvement.

I really don't think the gap between Eichel and McDavid is that big and I've watched both players play live around 5 times each and have watched a lot of their games on TV

I don't see the need to overpay to trade up and draft McDavid if we have the 2nd pick

When did you make this decision that McDavid was that much better than Eichel? You've been pushing the Eichel love all year.

I've seen Eichel play probably about 15 -20 between last year's WJC and this weekend. The (minor) concerns I have about his game have repeated themselves enough that I now consider them real concerns. He can be a frustrating player at times if you aren't just gawking at his athleticism.

Look, if we end up with Eichel, I'll still be thrilled. But I wouldn't let a player of Girgensons quality come between me and the best prospect I've ever seen, if that's what it took.

The deficiencies you mentioned are completely coachable, though. I don't expect anyone (even McDavid) to just walk in and already be a perfect player. Remember these guys are only 18, and they both have sky high ceilings.

EDIT: and almost as high floors, I should mention.

If McDavid had never existed and the Sabres won the Eichel lottery, how happy would you be Takeo

Alright, I mean I'm all for being able to change your opinion. I've been on the McDavid is better bandwagon for a long time and it's not because of anything Eichel lacks, like passing. It's just because his hockey IQ and hands are other worldly even in comparison with Eichel.

My only concern with this is that the leap from regular season success and winning a round or two every year to conference and Stanley Cup Final appearances has way more to do with the pieces that surround the elite talent than the elite talent itself. Nobody would say that Kopitar is better than Crosby... but the Kings have surrounded Kopitar with a way better supporting cast than Crosby has. I'll take Eichel and a deeper prospect/young core than a shallower one and McDavid.

Granted, those concerns aren't immediate yet, but if you don't plan for them, you might realize you need a better supporting cast when you're supposed to be competing.

Just my two cents on it.

What if I told you if Marner was Stromes size he would be challenging Eichel for the #2 pick. He has it all minus size. It really sucks the Leafs are going to get a franchise center in this draft. They will most likely have the choice of Marner/Strome if they don't get McDavid via the lottery. They haven't gone full tank like we have but they have Bernier, Reilly, Nylander, and Marner/Strome/McDavid in this years draft.

Why do we care so much? Leafs becoming good doesn't prevent us from winning a cup. Got to beat good teams.

I'd tell you you're crazy. The difference between Eichel and Marner is not size.

@SabresProspects: Draft stuff: Mitch Marner gets 3+1 in London win. Marner has five goals in two playoff games...Lawson Crouse 1+1 in Kingston loss.
