McDavid is a generational talent.

Eichel is not a generational talent. Eichel may or may not be a franchise player. Yes, Eichel is superior to Reinhart (which doesn't mean much).

To sacrifice so much and be so close to McDavid and not get him would be an incredible disappointment. They wouldn't "tank" for Eichel.

I'm basically repeating myself now so I will stop.

Even if Eichel is "just" a Stamkos- or Tavares-level prospect, that's just about the greatest thing to happen to this organization in the draft since Perrault. At the end of the day, the numbers don't lie, and Eichel has put forth the best draft year college freshman season in the last couple decades. That's nothing at which to thumb our noses.

As for the "they wouldn't tank for Eichel" comment, the irony is that is precisely why they're tanking--to assure themselves of at least Eichel. If Eichel's not in this draft, Murray doesn't tank to the degree that he did.

I'm looking forward to seeing where he moves the goalposts to if we win the lottery. He's almost out of moves.

So, on the Bills message board, we are having a conversation, and let's say Arizona offers you Eichel, OEL, and next year's first for McDavid. Would you take it? That is DAMN tempting.

I'd take that an run. No way AZ trades away their 2016 first.. Not with Matthews on the table.

Yes X1,000. A young, elite defenseman, a potential lottery pick next year, and Eichel?

Murray would need a plan in place to move that first rounder for another roster player before pulling the trigger. Having another first in the draft next year doesn't do us a whole lot of good right now. Saying yes or no to that would depend on who Murray could get for that first.

But having your franchise center and a young, stud No. 1 defenseman entering his prime sure would. Eichel + OEL alone would be worth the first pick. (Frankly, it would be overpayment and AZ wouldn't do it.)

Of course you do. OEL is one of the top three 25-and-under defensemen in the NHL. You can get a franchise player and a Norris candidate for the next 10 years, at least--and OEL idolizes Lidstrom, and I think his style translates to a long, long career. Take it and run. And we haven't even talked about the top-6 pick they'd give us in next year's draft. What, is Stone going to be their 1D next year?

I honestly believe Murray will do whatever it takes to get the #1 pick. But I hope we just win the lottery

As I said over there -- with the 2016 1st, it's a no brainer.

I think I probably do it even without the 2016 1st.....OEL is THAT good.

Risto/OEL is a defensive pairing that would give opposing top line FITS for 10+ years.

If he could do it without giving up Risto, Reinhart, Girgs or our 2016 1st.....let him.

However, I don't think a deal gets done without one of those 4......in which case, I'm happily selecting Eichel.

For a GM to consider that they would need to project McDavid to be like a 170 point player.

Maybe someone can convince Murray to watch the FrozenFour so he starts thinking about Eichel
instead of what it will take to move up from #2 to McDavid.

<nojinx>or Buffalo could just win the lottery</nojinx>

Why did it become McEichel? Why not McDavel? Or even McDichel... McDeichel. Wouldn't the better prospect get more of the celeb name? I bet McDavid is a bit pissed that he's just a prefix. Can't even get a bird consecutive letter? Shwag.

Put it this way, I would be happier than last draft.

Yes, most of the inevitable disappointment with Eichel is relative to McDavid. I'm not saying that Eichel isn't a very good prospect and I'm not saying there isn't a sizable drop-off after Eichel. I'm saying that the gap between McDavid and Eichel is wide and getting Eichel isn't worth the current state of the organization. That being said, fans can rationalize the #2 pick and Eichel all they want if that makes them feel better. It's certainly understandable.

You're welcome to your opinion, but it is in contrast to what I have heard from the vast majority of NHL scouts and execs.

Most have Eichel as a sure-fire franchise center, and would-be a consensus #1 overall pick in almost any other draft.

The consensus I have heard is that the gap between McDavid and Eichel is a lot narrower than the gap between Eichel and everyone else. And even then, I wonder how much of the supposed gap between McDavid and Eichel is due to Canadian media bias. It has to be at least a small factor - given two players of equal ability, the Canadian hockey establishment will always rate the "good Canadian boy" a little bit higher.

Thing is, once we have 30tg locked up(if), it's pretty much out of our hands who we pick. Of course 100% of us will be disappointed if we don't have McDavid. And yes I would be interested in trading for #1, but no at the expense of too much of of our future. Thankfully we probably have the biggest chip out of those that would be in the hunt for that #1 pick.

Our goal this year was top 2 pick and we are on our way there.

Why would Pheonix give up the first pick?

I could see Edmonton perhaps, certain teams might but not all teams would.

Giving up the farm for McDavid puts us in the situation like NYI where it was Tavares for 5 years before they had enough talent to compete.

It better represents what kind of chance you have at getting that player.

Total = 8 letters
Mc = 2 letters (25%)
Eichel = 6 letters (75%)

Almost 20/80% :sarcasm:

I'd be willing to do 2+NYI 1st+Ennis for number 1.

Sure, but that wouldn't get it done. The only way another GM would trade McDavid is for overpayment.

One or two of these:

Reinhart
Ristolainen
Girgensons
Zadorov
2016 1st

and probably more including our other 2015 1st and 2015 2nd's in play.

So no way do I do this. Franchise center in Eichel with our other assets is enough to create one of the scariest teams in the NHL.

If Jeremy Bracco played in London in Mitch Marner's situation, how much more hype would he have?

What is Mitch Marner's "situation". The one who he's scoring 3 goals a night in the OHL playoffs? Or the one where he's completely outplayed 27 year old Max Domi every game this season?

Bracco seems like a great sleeper but you make it seem like Marner's success is rigged or something.

27 year old?
