I'm going all in .....

I predict Babcock will be coaching Eichel next season

Maybe this is stating the obvious, but if we had won the lottery, i think Babcock would have already announced his decision to coach for us. Eichel is a great consolation prize, but i dunno if it's enough of a draw to be the tie breaker.

I think Babcock would be smart enough to watch Eichel at the WHC when he was there. He wasn't just looking at Larkin I bet.

Why would Holland want to play this dance with Babs every 2 years with short term deals? If I were him I'd say sign long term now or walk. As for Sabres, I would think (hope*) that we won't be looking for another coach in 2 years. This is his chance to hop on or get out of the way.

"He's definitely not coming to Toronto."

The news echoed the belief held by many in the hockey world, suggesting there isn't an opportunity available that can lure Babcock from Detroit and out of the 10-year partnership with Red Wings general manager Ken Holland.

"I think the offer he got from Buffalo is intriguing, but I think he looks at the team and realizes there's still a lot of work to be done there," McKenzie said. "And that if he wants to win - and he does - and if he wants to compete for Cups - and he does - he's going to get a better opportunity to do that in Detroit than he is in Buffalo.

"At this point, most people will be extremely surprised if he doesn't come out and say that he's staying with the Detroit Red Wings," he added.

Is there anything more there than McKenzie speculating?

As an analyst, based on what we've seen/heard, the prevailing sentiment is Babcock will stay in DET. That appears to be conventional wisdom

But I have to tell you, based strictly on not much more than instincts, I could see Babcock ending up in BUF. Like I said, just a hunch.

just that

At least we have a shot, according to Bob. Same can't be said about any other team is appears.

I will hold out hope until we know for sure. I think Babcock understands the opportunity that Buffalo is offering him and it will all come down to tonight's talk with Mrs. Babs.

so really no decision has been made public, but based just on a few details that have leaked to analysts, it seems detroit is the likely destination.

Did Babcock go through all of this just to get a higher offer from Detroit? Could have been his plan all along.

exactly. I think he may very well be leaning one way, but until after he talks with Holland today, and to his family tonight, no one really knows what will happen. What we do know is that its basically down to 2 teams: us and Detroit

Is Detroit really a cup contender? I'd say he has no shot at a cup with either team for 2-3 years anyway.

Hockey is a business and bro just wants to get paid. :sarcasm:

Personally, i think he was looking to see if the grass is greener. Found out that "no, not really" and doesn't want any part of a rebuild (tail end or not). Seems he wants a playoff team and to go from there. I just don't see how detroit manages to remain competitive in 5 years. They have some decent prospects, but aren't their cupboards practically bare? :shakehead

The only two endings to this story I can tolerate are him signing with Buffalo or staying in Detroit.

Staying in Detroit is based solely on his family liking it there. Can't compete with that.

Him leaving Detroit and choosing to go elsewhere would hurt, but that seems highly unlikely.

It's good business to show your current employer that you are in demand when seeking a raise. If so, then props to Babcock. Power move for sure.

But even so, we would one up that offer by more than enough. Like it was mentioned before.. Weather and hockey town feel is close to the same.

We have better prospects, a better future in general most would agree, and we can pay probly up to around 50% more over the course of the contract.

It would be irresponsible for him to stay put. If I'm his future grand kids, I will be pissed.

But the angle would be that Babcock never wanted to leave and never ever really considered it, just wanted to get Detroit to offer him more years and more $ by forcing their hand.
