@pj, i'm not really worried. new faces this season came in step by step, that's a huge plus i guess. first it was looch. early in the season it was a bit painful as he was meant to play the first line with kopi from the start, but we saw how it went, it was a process. vincent & luke i think it went relatively fast, relatively to their toi. scuderi should be ready for the playoffs as well i guess. also lak had a lot of injuries this season, and the team handled those well, somehow the team absorbed the missing parts and still performed well. lak, it's a well oiled machine running smoothly right now. they can handle such changes in roster. but still, 4 or maybe 5 new faces in the roster in just one season, that means something, it's a drastic change compared to previous years. imo the window for stanley is now.

So buyout Brown or give up assets to trade him? I'd lean toward the latter because if the Kings had two potential deals lined up for Richards, they should be able to unload him. Immediately, the buyout is very palatable, but mid-term and on it's rough (and at that point who really cares). The next three years the hit would be $517,857, $767,857, and $1,267,857; the lowest of the 14 year total.

Not very confident we can win another cup with the current lineup. Here hoping that we can somehow stay 1st in the division and play a wildcard team to start the playoffs. Hawks is a much better team and the Ducks seem unbeatable right now.

so after deadline and mersch reassignment...

lucic - kopitar - brown/toffoli

pearson - carter - brown/toffoli

king - lecavalier - versteeg

clifford - shore - lewis

nolan, andreoff

muzzin - doughty

martinez - schenn

scuderi - mcbain

mcnabb

or

mcnabb - doughty

muzzin - schenn

scuderi - martinez

mcbain

depending on the night. before the line blender?

I have my doubts about the Kings contending for the cup with this defense... 3 fails on defense is just too much...

There's no secret to anything. If they want to win in the playoffs, guys have to produce. Toffoli has to score like he'll want to be paid. Kopitar will need to be the all around center. Carter needs to make other teams worry about 2 scoring lines. Lucic needs to find the net. Gaborik has to be back at some point. Pearson has to be more than he's been this year. They need anything from Brown. Lecavalier, King, Versteeg, etc, all need to throw in a goal here and there.

This team needs some work in the offseason, tdl would not have solved these issues, I'm glad it played out this way

None of the players mentioned plays defense.
Kane,Perry,Benn will not be stopped by the non Doughty-Muzzin pairings.

I think the Kings will be better next year, once we get rid of the roster pylons...

Kopitar, Carter, Toffoli, Lucic, hopefully Gaborik, etc, etc, have to not be stopped either. You're not going to stop Kane, Perry, or Benn. Certainly not Kane anyway. He has shown over and over, and over, and over, and over again, no matter what team he's playing, you're not stopping him come playoff time. You have to outscore him.

If the Kings will continue their garbage defensive play (no outlet passes on tape} with plenty obstruction penalties vs top teams, then we better hope for 3+ goals per game to compete....

Btw Doughty didn't have to play 30min on those teams. Also Voynov-Mitchell...

I agree with you on the penalties. They're ridiculous. But c'mon, continued garbage defensive play? By what metric do the Kings play "good" defense then? They could win the ****ing Jennings this year, but they're garbage?

Come on man. The team plays ultra conservative to protect the half of defense that is made out of castoffs and is babysitted by the 3 Stanley cup caliber defensmen.

Regehr was a healthy scratch during 2014 run for christ sake. That was dominant, stacked and truly Jennings worthy.
Basically every pairing managed to be competitive vs the best players...

Doughty averaged almost 29 minutes in 2014. Also, I can remember people complaining about Mitchell and Voynov during the playoffs.

The Kings won't beat Chicago defensively. They couldn't do it in 2013, and they wouldn't have done it in 2014.

Regehr was scratched after he got hurt in the 2nd round. After the Kings had found a winning formula with Greene in there. And no Mitchell or Regehr against the Ducks. Greene and Schultz in there instead.

The same dominant, stacked, and Jennings worthy defense that was awful in the first 3 games against the Sharks.

There's a point and counterpoint to everything. We can sit here all day and go through them. The road to a Cup isn't usually perfect. There's going to be adversity. There's going to be some guys that need to do more than they usually do. Keith had to play 31 minutes a night last year. Will the Kings win the Cup? Maybe, maybe not. Can they? Sure. Could they not? Yeah.

Right you are.

Heck I remember a good portion of this board in 2014, was convinced (myself included) after game one vs SJ; that the Kings were not going to get out of round one.

The Kings are first in the League in Goals Against. What more do you expect?

It really boggles my mind that this is continually a topic on this board. It was when people were nitpicking Jake Muzzin, Robyn Regehr and every other defensemen who has been on the roster the past 4 years.

Ok, this I can get behind but I find it funny that you refer to outlet passes as "defensive play". Your offense starts on the break out and that's where the Kings are currently struggling and have traditionally struggled (scoring goals).

I didn't think the Kings were world beaters earlier this year when they had a ten point division lead. The teams behind them have simply caught up to what was an unsustainable pace. People were upset after the 7 game road trip and it actually wasn't that bad (3-3-1). I'd say the three Cup contenders in the west right now are Chicago, Anaheim and LA. I do think LA can compete with anyone as long as their scoring wakes up.

Actually I put the outlet passing as also an issue. Scuderi, Schenn were caught pinned in the d zone so often it was embarassing.
I was one of those who defended Muzzin. He can make a turn skating without falling or obstructing opponents. He doesn't allow opponents to skate freely to Quick and makes a decent outlet pass.

The defense seemed more Swiss cheese caliber then Jennings caliber vs the Ducks.

The saddest part of yesterdays game was however guys like Lucic, Brown, Clifford who watched Perry and Perron abuse Quick and Doughty and did nothing other then impersonate pylons the entire game...

I wonder if this is coaches orders sometimes. We have a knack of picking up penalties at present, perhaps Sutter has told the guys to reel it in. I though Lucic sent the message pretty clear when he crowded gibsons **** though.

I highly doubt it. They haven't been a factor at all.

stuff to take from the lombardi presser...

gaborik should be back PRIOR to the playoffs... but it will be "very very close to their start". great news that it's 8-10 not 10-12 weeks. also took a little dig at him saying his recovery time relies on how hard he works towards rehabbing it.

they had no plans to make any trades today but fielded calls, nothing blew him away and hinted that the cap space would be used for returning players. which he hinted wasn't gaborik included... so maybe greene is closer to a return as well as nolan.

a greene with 15-20 games and gas in the tank > him after 82. especially if he's been working out as hard and is in the shape jim fox said he was a couple games back in the broadcast.
