Other reporters stated that they were at an impasse while Mayor said otherwise last night, and now it's all but official. I don't know who his sources are but clearly the guy is connected.

Maybe when he said soon before they felt both parties were within range, and it looks like someone bridged that gap to get this deal done.

Read LeBrun's tweet, in line with what Mayor has been saying for a while now:

Onto Lucic now.

Did you read his tweet? He said all is fine, but that isn't true. Numerous sources (including respected insiders Friedman, Krypeos, and Dreger) have wrote that Kopitar was unhappy with the progress of the negotiations.

Exactly, and with it will come a new CBA and the opportunity for more compliance buyouts.

why does the NHL always need a lockout for a new CBA...they should be negotiating way before it gets to that...you know like what other leagues do.

i have been a proponent of dealing him in the off season if there is a market.

With the cap being stagnant or possibly going down, where is the market for players like Gaborik or Brown?

It was always going to be damned if they did, damned if they didn't. Can't let him walk/trade him when you got another shot, don't want to use so much cap space for 1 guy when who knows what the cap will be. It's the lesser of two evils.

So if it is 8x10 I think that would definately be a win for the kopitar camp. If the kopitar camp did meet in the middle what was their original request? Couldn't be that much more.

They probably asked for the same 8/84 that Toews & Kane got, so they did come down some.

Usually, in period of time when contract is getting "papered" nothing happens to jeopardize it, but Kopi deal has been drawn out/difficult.

Hence the emphasis, for now, on "not done" just yet.

Wonder what the Kings have up their sleeve.

I dunno, why do the players hire an asshat like Fehr to represent them?

That's a **** ton of money. It's an overpayment for sure, he isn't going to be pumping out 60-70 points per season after hitting 30. He's going to be an above average centerman with good defense getting paid Ovechkin type money.

I really do not know...he would have to finish the regular season and playoffs very strong (gaborik as I think there is no hope on Brown so we should all just embrace him). Maybe a team needing to get to the floor or something...Arizona would be in trouble of Doan retires.

I see this argument every year. Bad teams always find a way to get to the floor without taking on stupid contracts in a trade.

Head for the hills!! We don't like your kind around here!!

The NFL prints money, so even though there's a cap and no guaranteed contracts, the signing bonuses make up for it to some degree. Even though the NFLPA could be the strongest of the bunch, they never have been. Or at least not for a while anyway.

Baseball, Fehr was there when they cancelled the World Series, and they had many labor fights decades before the NHL ever did.

The NBA has fewer players, and as long as the big name guys are happy, everything is alright. Plus a soft cap.

The NHL is dividing up a smaller pie, and they got started later than other leagues did in terms of labor agreements.

I would like to thank AEG for being willing to spend this kind of money to ice a contending team. After the Richards settlement and this deal, no one can call Uncle Phil cheap.

whether or not it happens isn't what is stupid about that post...cheering or hoping for a lockout is the most idiotic thing ever. How can you call yourself a fan when you are cheering for the game to not be played?
Why not cheer for no lockout but the new CBA to allow a buy out as if there were no lockout, or have some sort of franchise provision where you can go above the cap by one player of the teams choosing.
Point is there are many things to hope for before a lockout.

Me I am hoping Kopitar is one of few players that is still elite till he is 40, the CDN dollar rebounds by year 3 of his deal and the cap goes way up as the game grows leading to it being a steal come year 4. I know it is very unlikely but hope for positive things not a ****ign lockout.

I am not cheering for a lockout. If the league and NHLPA can agree on a new CBA that allows for compliance buyouts in a few years, then great.

History tells us that a new CBA will only be negotiated after another lockout though.

Hope is great, but it's very unlikely that any of the things you are hoping for in regards to Kopitar's performance as he gets older, or the performance of the Canadian dollar against the USD will come true.

A lockout isn't the end of the world. The NHL seems to come back stronger and provides a better product for the fans to watch after each work stoppage.

doesn't mean anything more than we have a locked in #1C for the better part of a decade...something alot of teams would like

Please stop downplaying the ramnifications of this deal. Kopitar's contract, along with the Brown and Gaborik deals will have an impact on the future success of this team in the standings. The window will be open for probably 3 more years, including this one at best.

a lot of assumptions here. a handful of people pointed to Kopitars numbers last year and used them as evidence of "regression", he's proved all of them wrong so far this season. with the way he plays, I dont think its at all unreasonable to suggest he will be a truly effective #1C until hes 34-35. ***** and moan about his contract all you want, he wouldve gotten the same or more on the free market and we'd be without our best player. cant have it both ways

please stop posting **** like this
"Rooting for another lockout, and compliance buyouts if this comes to pass. The window for cups is 2-3 years now IMO, and that includes this season."

Nothing is stupider than a "fan" rooting for a lockout.

When you take the lack of success of the kings for the first 40 years of their existence a 3 year cup window is something I will get behind. I was pointing out we do not know what is going to happen with other contracts or what this means for lucic. All we know is that we have a #1C..that is all we know. Everything else is speculation. Some very likely speculation..but still speculation.

top two-way 1C + top two-way 1D >>> anything else you could be spending your money on

think about it, what other teams have that combo? Hawks and that's it. Makes you think, doesn't it? Boston won with that back when Chara was a top guy as well. This is also why I think Florida is going to be a real menace in the next few years. Barkov and Ekblad are no joke.

Some big decisions coming soon.

How much do you guys think Lucic wants? 7.5/yr for 8 years?

Do we manage to find the cap space for Dwight King? How can we afford Toffoli/Pearson? How can we afford Luke Schenn? Donating the money from Erhoff would make Schenn stay with us, but some of the other options seems low. Lewis I can't see sticking around.

Tough decisions to make here. No team will want to take Brown or Gaborik if you ask me.
