Not saying you don't pay the man, but there is a lot to consider here. At this point I think there is a greater chance the cap not going up than actually increasing.

There isn't that much to consider. Kopitar is one of the pillars this team is built on. He needs to be signed.

If the cap doesn't go up that doesn't really effect Kopitar's contract other than maybe he takes 500k less. Worrying about retaining depth players is secondary to signing the 1C.

You sign Kopitar even if that means losing Pearson or someone like him in the future.

It is , what it is, The Kings can't afford to close the window for a Cup right now, or next season.

The Kings would be wasting Doughty/Muzzin/Toffoli's Prime Production years.

Kings will get nice assets for someone like Pearson if it came to that.

Yup. I like Pearson, don't get me wrong, but the gap between Pearson and a Pearson replacement is much smaller than Kopitar and a Kopitar replacement. Even if that requires overpaying a bit.

Of course, I'm not saying pay him whatever it takes. But the reality is the best players on the team (and Kopitar IS one of the best players; he has been the top scorer and defensive forward for 8 years now) are "overpaid" to be kept.

Lombardi will blink first. He has to. You don't let your #1 C walk during a Cup window. And the window for a valued trade is gone. Dean is not going to trade Kopitar at the deadline with the Kings leading the division. That means, at best, you're looking to recoup a pick or two at the draft for negotiating rights.

Dean has mismanaged too many assets since 2012 to walk away from Kopitar. The cupboard is dry in terms of top flight talent. Carter is getting older. Our center depth is abysmal, like Nashville abysmal, if Kopitar leaves. Sekera, Lucic, and then Kopitar would just about cripple this franchise in terms of asset management.

Chicago said screw it with Kane/Toews because they would rather hold on to their top flight assets and wade through the cap hell later. This is pretty much what you have to do in an unfriendly cap world.

Dean's problem was never Kopitar. Kopitar is worth 9-10 million a season. I think Dean knows that. But in the current cap climate, if you're paying your star that much you really need to make the most out of the rest of your space. Enter: Brown. Brown is, has been, and will continue to be Dean's cap albatross, and it's affecting the rest of the team.

If Dean is able to get rid of Brown's contract, I have no doubt Kopitar will be signed for a Toews-tier contract.

Yep, not really anything new. Reporters just trying to stay busy not really reporting anything other than the contract isn't signed yet.

So in other words, he's going to UFA. ****ing great.

Ah ****.. guess I'm wrong... contract isn't getting done.

The Mayor of Wrongstown.

We are absolutely ****ed.

Nice knowing you, Kopitar. Good luck with your next team. :(

Good news for Kings fans. An early morning source says progress made on Kopitar contract last night. Not done, but inching closer...

The mood around the Kopitar negotiations late yesterday afternoon wasn't good. Patience running out. Something changed last night.

gah, please prohibit the phrase "inching closer".

ps. a lot of articles about kopi's contract in slovenian media yesterday and today, but mostly quoting standard sources. vibrant discussion on forums as well, the main question being "if lak/lombardi fails - in which team would you like to see kopi next season?" it's just speculation of course, but luckily the nation voted for eastern conference.

One of the TSN guys about a week ago mentioned 'salary structure" being an issue and I can see that being a reason. We read a couple mos back that the term was agreed on and about a month ago, the money was close , then NMC/NTC and salary structure might be the final bits.
Could be Kopi didn't want a front loaded deal...anyway

From Jon Rosen (LA KINGS Insider) yesterday

•Jon Rosen of LA Kings Insider: Darren Dreger on TSN 1050 radio on Anze Kopitar.

“Many have reported over the past several weeks if not months that the Kopitar deal is imminent. Our group felt there would be an announcement coming early in the new year, in January. Unless Dean Lombardi between about 10 p.m. last night and early this morning has some epiphany and changes his approach, it’s not likely going to happen. Not necessarily that the extension isn’t going to happen, but an announcement any time soon may not happen, and this is not sitting well with his star. It’s a dangerous game Lombardi and the management of the LA Kings are playing these days.â€

Maybe wants big signing bonus like has been going on with other contracts lately?

Can't imagine he's NOT wanting it front loaded

last night my phone tells me that the two sides are at an impass and no deal is imminent.

This morning my phone tells me a deal is close

it will happen when it happens but I thought this 4 day break maybe a good opportunity for it to get done

lol...been a wild 12 hours

Dreger has rarely been a good source for news on the Kings.

He's almost always wrong, and he tends to play both sides of the coin.

Let's face it, there isn't one talking head that really knows what's going on. They can talk about sources and groups all they want, but since that Williams deal Lombardi plays everything ridiculously close to the vest. Given that Kopitar's agent is a solid guy and Robitaille's best bud, the odds of either side saying anything outside of negotiations is next to nil.

The only guy out there that has any weight to what he says is McKenzie, and just the other day he said that it 'seems' Kopitar is getting frustrated but everything is an enigma and a riddle. If Bob knows something directly he doesn't mince words, he says it. Just more proof that no one knows anything.

The falling loonie will soon affect escrow payments players make this season.

http://www.tsn.ca/sliding-loonie-may-hit-nhl-players-within-weeks-1.422272

Stew Gavin, a former NHL player who now acts as a Toronto-based financial adviser for professional athletes, said he wouldn’t be surprised if escrow is readjusted to 20 per cent from its current 16 per cent.

“Companies in Western Canada are laying off and industries are slowing down. People are not buying,” Gavin said. “There are some tough headwinds. Who knows if companies will keep supporting teams by renting luxury suites and buying tickets? There have been some steep declines in a relatively short time. Blame oil prices. There’s an oversupply and the price of oil hasn’t hit bottom.”

Looking forward, it’s impossible to say whether the Canadian dollar will rebound, or continue to slip closer to its record low of 61.76 cents, set on Jan. 18, 2002.

David Doyle, a currency analyst with Macquarie Group Ltd. in Toronto who first predicted in February 2015 that the Canadian dollar would fall below 70 cents, now says he believes the dollar will continue to slide to 59 cents.

The kind of tumble Doyle predicts would be especially bad news for the NHL. Investment bankers who specialize in the sports industry say roughly one-third of the NHL’s revenues are generated in Canadian currency.

Canadian team ticket sales account for about 11 per cent of overall league income and the NHL’s new $5.2-billion television deal with Rogers — worth $433 million a year — is another 11 per cent. Then there are Canadian corporate sponsorships, local broadcast contracts and other income, such as licensing deals.

A one-cent swing in the value of the Canadian dollar can affect overall NHL revenue, or HRR, by $12 million, a source said.
Anyone with a rudimentary understanding of economics, math, and the percentage of HRR the NHL derives from Canadian teams should be able to understand what this means for the cap over the next few seasons. It's important to note that without the players using the escalator clause last season, something many of them did not want to do, that the cap for this season would not have increased. Now the escrow payments are going to increase. The average player is not going to want to invoke the escalator clause again just so big name UFAs can sign fatter contracts.

...and of course Bettman and Daly are going to say things are just fine. The cap projections the NHL made during last season for this season were wrong.

I hate this drag and all unknowns.
But I love how Kopitar is playing atm, he has been at top of his game. Would be a shame if he takes a step or two back if/when he gets his contract.

No one is saying he doesn't deserve to get paid well. However, it's all relative, and the idea that the Toews deal should be used as a comp doesn't hold much water. Not because the two aren't comparable as players, but because the economic situations at the time of the contract signing is not comparable.

Well, and also because Toews is overpaid by at least $1.5 million.

Atm I don't have any fear about Kopitar signing with Kopitar, it will come, it has to, any other option takes Kings backwards(unless if Kings could get legit stud ala Malkin, but thats not happening).

I more worried that once Kopitar signs he will lose some of hunger and determination he is showing last month or so.
