There's a cap thread on the business of hockey board that could probably use more contribution/discussion like what's going on here. They also have some additional information/thought and projections. i.e. jersey ads sooner rather than later to stop the bleeding.

http://hfboards.mandatory.com/showthread.php?t=1994005&page=2

Let's try to keep the political side of the discussion away but thoughts inasmuch as they're related to the cap and our ability to manage our roster are fine.

I won't buy a jersey with this crap on it, but most probably will.

I think, from a business standpoint, they would gain much more by the millions going directly to teams than the loss of merch sales. I generally agree but if it has to be done in the name of keeping the cap stable, so be it.

This is why teams have "capologists" and do their own projections on revenue and what the cap might be in the next season. With this type of volatility, and drop in the Canadian dollar the projections will likely be incorrect by a fair amount.

Maybe Kopitar's agent should get a whiff of economic reality, and understand that this is not the same environment in which the Toews and Kane contracts were signed.

But they were caught just as off guard as everyone else really. Thing is I don't think the teams get all the info from the general fund as it were till later.

As to the latter that is the case with most agents.

It's a very different marketplace. Until this point salaries have gone up year over year if you were comparable. And this year looks to be the first where that won't happen. That is a shock to the GM's, players and agents. It's just unfortunate we're stuck having to sign our number 1 center as one of the first players to have to deal with this.

I generally agree but it will depend on exactly what they do.
Will the jerseys they sell have the ads on them?
And how will they do the ads?
The NBA decided after hitting the jackpot on their TV deal to not use ads on the jerseys. But they were going to put them right where the NBA logo had been. In a very similar size. So if they were to do that with the NHL jerseys and put an ad right in the center where the NHL logo is and move it. Make it similar in size. I likely wouldn't be opposed to it. Or put one where the Reebok branding is on the back. Those would likely be the only two places I would not have issue with and would maybe still buy them.
But I have hopes that they just would sell them without the ads to the general public. That just means you're stuck with them when buying a game used jersey.

i applaud to the sentiment. european soccer: we're used to those now. ppl buy jerseys with adds on, big time. it's hard to stay a purist these days, there's not much to choose.

I agree. Reading the thread Brad posted, if we have another global recession, the cap could decrease anywhere between $0 to $6M over the next two to three years. The NHL is going to have to get very creative in creating new revenue streams. Not sure they can though as the novelty of the outdoor games seems to have run its course, TV contracts are now locked in, etc.

It's ads that have kept me from buying a MLS jersey. Of course they did exactly what worked in EU being the same sport. I don't want a giant Herbalife on my chest.

As a Galaxy season ticket holder I completely 100% agree with this sentiment. I feel embarrassed walking around with Herbalife on my shirt. Most Galaxy gear I have doesn't have the herbalife sponsor.

I'm sure if the NHL goes this route at first only the highest of reputable companies/charities will be allowed. Within a few years, however, it will be highest bidder no questions asked...

me neither. i don't even want a number or a name on a hockey jersey, not even #11 and i'm from slovenia, i understand that & i'm a purist myself. so i have to pay almost a double price for what i want and that's it. on the other hand, a lesson from european soccer: barca and real are making billions with jerseys, scary numbers. adds are somehow bypassed here, or around the world. we're the last mohicans, but a similar tide will come to nhl one day.

I have no problems with player numbers and names. That is just part of the jersey. And I only buy authentic jerseys. The ones that are used by players not the lesser ones that are sold more cheaply for the general public.

You really don't have the faintest idea how oil prices affect the Canadian dollar, and how the value of the Canadian dollar vs the USD affects the salary cap.

GMs did not anticipate this change in the economy and have been handing out contracts based on their cap inflation models. Those models turned out to be wrong. The only way Bowman felt comfortable in handing Toews and Kane a combined AAV of $21M, was based on an internal cap inflation model that told him the cap would be around $80M by next season. The Blackhawks are going to feel the effects of that incorrect assumption for years, or do you think Kane is going to score at a 1.5 PPG pace forever?

The Kings need not make the same mistake. Hopefully, in the end, Kopitar is a reasonable man in these negotiations and wants to continue to play in a winning environment.

If I gave a **** I could spend 1 hour and find some pretty good numbers. I don't care. Further more the league revenue is based on more the Oil and the Canadian dollars... I would be shocked if the forecast the NHL put out is in the range of 3-4M or more off. Also you really have no idea what's going on, which has been clearly documented by your comments about Kopitar's play/contract (Kings leading scorer, again). It seems you don't have the ability to come to terms with reality and are in constant panic mode.

Hawks had to resign 2 guys that were a major part of 3 cups. You have to pay for that. Now going forward they have to find ways of being competitive. Right now the Hawks are one point up on the Kings (one of their best seasons ever) and second in their division riding a 7 game win streak. They are finding a way of making it work with those 2 $10.5M contracts. You keep saying how those contracts are handcuffing the Hawks... I don't see it... they'll add some depth at the deadline and be competing for another cup. 10.5 is a lot, but those 2 give you a shot at the cup almost every year.

Just out of curiosity, how much do you think the cap will go down at the current or forecasted Oil prices... throw a number out why don't you.

Moving Brown, retaining 1.2-2M frees up more then enough to cover Kopitar's contract, variations due to Oil, and a replacement. I'm sure there are those out there that feel Brown should be moved regardless.

The world is always ending, and some day I'm sure it will. I just don't think Kopitar's contract and Oil are going to be what does it.

Being 3-4M off is a big deal. That is how much they were off on initial projections last year. And we came in with what would have been a flat cap without the escalator. If they are off by 3-4M this year we're talking the potential of a cap shrinkage. So it is a very big deal if they are off.
I'm hoping they learned from last year and made a much more conservative estimate this year. But I'm not exactly thinking that is the case just hoping.
And where the Loonie is based off more than just oil. Oil seems to be hitting it very hard. Especially when it's such a small percentage of the economy. But when the latest estimates are about 33-40% of total revenue come from the Canadian market having that amount reduced by as much as 30% is huge. And will have a giant impact. Thankfully they use a daily average to figure the cap. So it won't be where it is in the end but an average of where it's been over the whole season.
And don't think for a second those contracts we're signed on the projections. And those projections were off even more than what the NHL game at the beginning of last year. At that point they were projecting an 80M cap for this year. It's now looking like that number won't be seen for at least 2 more years, if even then.

Thanks for your testimony. I rest my case.

So which player(s) can the Kings add to compete against the Hawks in the playoffs? I'm not very confident that the current roster can beat the Hawks.

In before Brad says Buff.

It is a coin flip with Chicago.

Not sure if posted... Just heard on tsn radio... Contract talks with Kopi have hit a snag (Dreger reporting) will post the audio in bit (not available yet) ... Getting a little worried

So you're conceding that the Towes/Kane contracts weren't mistakes because the Hawks can still field a competitive team with them this year?

Where does that leave your argument for the Kopitar contract?

Who would you replace Kopitar with now that RyJo has been traded?

Many thinking money/ term agreement has @LAKings Kopitar ext' imminent, no deal is in place as of now and told remaining talks at an impasse

I dunno, this feels more like people picked up on "oh wait, I thought it was imminent, it's not done?" which was published a few places over the last few days and ran with "OMG they're at a stalemate."
