Okay.... That's a lot! But I suppose that's what was expected.

No ****.

Pay the man his money. Been saying that forever, what the **** took so long anyway? Thank God Dean has finally come to his senses. Sign the ****ing thing and let's move on to hockey.

Unless something out of left field occurs at last moment, Kopitar's deal is expected to be that $10M AAV for 8 years.

Rooting for another lockout, and compliance buyouts if this comes to pass. The window for cups is 2-3 years now IMO, and that includes this season.

It will hurt down the road, but it's about keeping a contending team together for a few more years. Yes, I understand this deal will cause some casualties this off-season (likely Gaborik) and likely another the following summer when Toffoli gets 8 years at $7M+.

I have said it before, and I will say it again, if it really goes south around the next work stoppage, the next round of compliance buyouts is always an option.

LOL at buying out Kopitar.

This is getting ridiculous now. Do you even read your posts before hitting that "submit" button?

I'm not necessarily referring to Kopitar. The Kings have lots of long term deals on the books. I could however see in 4 years from now how a 50-point center at age 33 making an AAV of $10M with a cap of around $82M could be bought out. I guess we'll revisit this then.

not when it comes to Kopitar apparently, he's had it out for him for a while

This is uttter BS. I have been pointing out that the Toews contract should not be used as a comp, and for good reasons economically. I also pointed out that players don't start producing more offense when they hit 30 years of age. Kopitar's numbers will continue to decline as he gets older. That's the reality of the situation. I know the truth is a downer for some of you, but it is what it is. Dean is overpaying by a pretty large amount to keep a player happy for the short term. That's it in a nutshell.

You mean, like 44 days ago? He said "soon" 44 days ago.

Other reporters stated that they were at an impasse while Mayor said otherwise last night, and now it's all but official. I don't know who his sources are but clearly the guy is connected.

Maybe when he said soon before they felt both parties were within range, and it looks like someone bridged that gap to get this deal done.

Read LeBrun's tweet, in line with what Mayor has been saying for a while now:

Onto Lucic now.

Dean is going to have some work to do, going to have to get creative. Well, at least we have one of the best at it. Maybe he can Pronger Matt Greene...

I actually agree with him, 5 years into the deal, his play declining severely, with compliance buyouts available, you wouldn't do it?

EDIT: Personally, not rooting for a lockout, just see it as inevitable.

Ok, two things:

Gaborik is signed through the 2020-21 season. So unless you are talking a trade, he's here for the duration.

There are no compliance buyouts left. The time frame for those ended on June 30, 2014.

So if it is 8x10 I think that would definately be a win for the kopitar camp. If the kopitar camp did meet in the middle what was their original request? Couldn't be that much more.

i have been a proponent of dealing him in the off season if there is a market.

Exactly, and with it will come a new CBA and the opportunity for more compliance buyouts.

See my post above. Compliance buyouts are no longer available.

Not right now they aren't, but you can bet they will be after the next Lockout/CBA negotiation. It's actually perfect timing for the Kings, they likely will be able to shed at least 1 or 2 contracts in 5 years.

Not just be able to, the Kings will NEED to shed at least two bad contracts in 4 or 5 years.

Do you guys want to see a Kings team without Kopitar? I sure don't.

Besides his contract will have little effect on the cap situation when the Kings are in a full rebuild two years from now.

Kopitar is our best player and has basically been a savior for the Kings helping bring in this successful era, and now he will retire a King. Don't see the issue here

It's going to happen, because the owners have too much money tied up in these long term deals.

whether or not it happens isn't what is stupid about that post...cheering or hoping for a lockout is the most idiotic thing ever. How can you call yourself a fan when you are cheering for the game to not be played?
Why not cheer for no lockout but the new CBA to allow a buy out as if there were no lockout, or have some sort of franchise provision where you can go above the cap by one player of the teams choosing.
Point is there are many things to hope for before a lockout.

Me I am hoping Kopitar is one of few players that is still elite till he is 40, the CDN dollar rebounds by year 3 of his deal and the cap goes way up as the game grows leading to it being a steal come year 4. I know it is very unlikely but hope for positive things not a ****ign lockout.
