Nice goal by Kessy. Any chance he gets a call up for 4th line duty?

He also PK's down there. I'd see him as an upgrade on Gazdic in every area sans fighting. He is more physical, plays with an edge, is a better skater and has better hands. I see him as an eventual Hendricks replacement albeit not as good defensively and not as fast. That said we will need some cap friendly players at some point if we are going to have a loaded top 9.

A guy that IMO we really need to keep an eye on is Marco Roy. He looks bigger this season and has really come on of late with 3 points in his last 4 games. If he keeps it up we should be inking him to an ELC before seasons end or slightly after. I don't think that any single player benefited more from Yakimov returning to Russia than Roy.

I think Winquist is another guy who could be due for an ELC (correct me if I'm wrong, but was sure he's on a minor league deal). Not sure what his injury was but he was looking like a guy who could become a decent secondary scoring winger at the NHL level someday.

One could hope. He's still young enough to figure it out.

Absolutely agreed on all fronts. I think people forget that Hendricks played four years of college hockey and four years of AHL hockey before making the NHL full time. Kessy absolutely has Hendricks type upside. People are just a bit biased and unfair to the kid because Tambo traded a better asset for him.

Kessey and Roy play the same kind of game. Both are physical and when they are given a chance they go to the net. I wish both had some more talent or better skating ability but on the other hand you can always count on them to finish their checks.

Saturday night was a COMPLETELY different game then I have seen us do all season. We played the #1 team in the league Ontario with a true NHL goal tender in Budaj. EVERY player hit everything that moved and both defense and offense were in sync with passing and defense. Very few bad turnovers and Eetu was there playing MUCH better than the last time he was here. He was solid and made a save that LB let go thru the night before. Ontario ended up imploding and when Kessey got his goal I thought Budaj was going to absolutely lose it. it did not help that the Condors turned off all of the lights in the arena and a very large red light was turned onto Budaj for maybe a full minute while they announced the goal scorer.

Had anyone said the bolded when we drafted Roy he wouldve been laughed at for days. Roy was supposedly our most offensive prospect when MacT drafted him.
A lot closer to Tobias Reider than Kale Kessy thats for sure.

They're going to have an interesting decision on Kessy.

He's wavier eligible next year, so I wouldn't be surprised to see him get a call up later this season to see if he sinks or swims at the NHL level.

If he's added PK'ing to his resume that's only going to help his case.

Based on contracts, you've likely got a bottom 6 looking like this going into next season.

Pouliot-Letestu-Kassian
Kessy/Korpikoski-Hendricks-Pakarinen
Lander

I still wouldn't mind swapping out Letestu with a bigger centre on a shorter contract, but I do like the potential physicality.

Who is going to pick him up on waivers? These guys clear all the time.

It's just amazing as a whole how many guys are clearing nowadays.

The only thing is, he is the type of player that does (time to time) get claimed. (Porter, Farnham, Bodnarchuk, Ferraro, Wagner, Stoll)

  • His salary's near league min
  • Could step in and be used as a mucker on the 4th line right away
  • Seems to be able to play the role with no health concerns (looking at you Pitlick and Hamilton)
  • And he has shown some useful traits (PK'ing, modest scoring, physical play), even if it just the AHL level

A lot of times I think teams pass over guys whom they think need to be in a special, specific opportunity to succeed. However if a team believes he can step in and play, I could see a cap strapped team taking a flyer.

IMO it's an easy decision, he makes the team in Gazdic's spot. I also think that we will try to shed some salary on the wing so that means one of Pouliot or Eberle gets moved out.

Again though this is a team that has had how many injuries and hasn't given him a shot? We aren't the LA Kings here, we are the Edmonton Oilers odds of a guy that never gets a chance on our team being claimed on waivers is slim to none.

No one is going to claim a prospect off waivers who has never played in NHL before.

Landon Ferraro had his first cup of tea in 2013.. then played a couple more games in 2014\15... 10 more NHL games before DET waived him.

lets not forget that a team claiming him would have to keep him on NHL roster.

yeah.. kessy is not getting claimed hahaha.. every team has prospects like him.. better ones at that and they still go through waivers unclaimed.

Who was the dude who said "not in the ****ing NHL yet"? Sounded Russian but I didn't think we had any Russians left down there.
