As interesting though... The damning text was sent to Greg Campbell... Because of course it was.

Wideman got suspended 10 games and Landy has been suspended 5 this season. Let that sink in.

If I'm being honest I think what Landeskog did to Despres is far worse than what Wideman did to the referee

I know I'm in the minority there but I just completely understand Wideman's reaction. Doesn't make it right and a suspension was warranted simply because he hit an official but he didn't realize he was physically hurting an official until it was already happening. In that situation you just protect yourself and apply force to whoever is about to bump into you. He's just unlucky that it was an official but I bet if it was a player on his own team he would have reacted the exact same way.

The text being sent to Gregory Campbell and not a teammate (like Bettman said) makes this more interesting.

Same. I completely understand where Wideman was coming from with that. Just an unfortunate result for him.

I've been in that exact situation. You're hurt, you're vulnerable and you're shook up. You're going to the bench with your head down and bam somebody appears out of nowhere. Your immediate reaction is to protect yourself. You don't necessarily try to "hurt" the other person but you do make sure they get the worst of it instead of you. He had no idea who he was hitting until it was too late, he was just protecting himself.

Still, completely suspension worthy. You're responsible for your own actions but I have a soft spot for this one because while it was wrong, it wasn't malicious and like I said I've been there before. Landeskog's situation was very malicious.

Wideman was much more malicious. Did he want to send the guy to the hospital, no probably not but he wants to hit him. I'm not complaining about Landy's suspension but if this is how it's going to be they better start backing up that reputation and getting their money's worth.

I think Wideman's was much more malicious... Landy just missed on his cross check. It was a dumb play by Landy, but I don't think he had intent on hurting Depres. Wideman... I have real doubts about his intent. On top of that, refs are WAY off limits, Depres was a bit late but late hits happen.

I agree. Stupid, irresponsible play by Landy (just body check him, dummy), but he certainly didn't appear to hunt down Despres in an effort to injure him. Neither did he, Depres played soon after, which I know the NHL takes into account. Whether they should or not is another discussion but anyways.

Wideman's case is another thing, because whatever his intentions were, abusing an official always warrants an automatic suspension and that's the end of it. I kind of do understand flip flopping on whether 10 or 20 games is the correct call, based on what the rulebook says, but it does seem fishy for sure.

What Wideman did broke about every rule in the book he could with that hit. Should have been given an extra 30 games but because a NFL executive said there's no way Wideman wanted to hit him then they only give him 10 games.

Wideman received a de facto 19 game suspension anyway because of how long it took for this whole thing to get resolved, so I don't get the outrage from people who thought he deserved the 20 games since he basically got that anyway - unless they for some reason really care about Wideman getting his 9 games worth of pay back for some reason.

I've already made pretty clear that I don't think Wideman just snapped after 12 seasons in the NHL of doing nothing like this every before and that as someone who has been concussed, and someone who has interacted with people who have been concussed, it seemed pretty obvious that he was reacting to something skating right up to him after being concussed and just reacted by trying to hit it, which is what he's conditioned to do.

I've also said that he clearly deserved 10 games as per the rules, and now he's received 19 games by default so I think he's paid his price.

By no means do I care about the difference between defacto 19 and 20. I think he deserved the full 20 games, but the overturn of the suspension really doesn't bother me. Nor does it bother me that he gets that pay back.

Now Daly says the text the NHL referenced was from Wideman to Mark Giordano.

For me and Wideman it wasnt the hit alone it was the entire sequence afterwards. He showed no concern. He gets hit, slams his stick on the ice, looks up --so he clearly knows where he is going and whats in front of him, and purposefully with malice and forethought brought his arms up and crosschecked the official. He then went to the bench, stepped over it and took a drink of gatorade. He should have gone to the locker room if he was that out of it.

Landy was just bad as well and im ok with (well not ok obviously) but its warranted. He's a repeat offender and he hit him up high. Oh and the guy hit had a concussion given to him by his own teammate earlier in the year. It was beyond dumb. It was Stewart breaking his hand in a fight and missing 20 games dumb.
That kid man needs to get his act together. I love me some Landy but he seems to lose control when he is "on his game" Like a race car driver hitting a top speed and spiraling out or something.

When you're skating around with a concussion you don't always understand/process what your eyes are seeing. Or even that you probably shouldn't be on the ice. I played two periods with a concussion thinking I was just really tired, and didn't really process much of what happened after that ***** crosschecked my head into the glass.

Oh good the Hawks are getting Hossa back. Thats just super. Are they gonna sign Radulov for a $1 and end up getting Matthews for Cumiskey too?
