He still has a long way to go.
Looking at the production alone is deceiving.
I like Auger, and have been impressed with him, but he still has a long way to go. Most of the goals he scores, probably four or five on the year, are trash goals. He gets in the right spots which is excellent, but as far as asserting himself, CREATING the goal, and pressing the middle like a power forward, he can hang on the perimeter too much. Last night he was pressing the middle, stepping into higher scoring areas, and firing it. I think everyone, including Stots, has mentioned they want to see him continue to do that. Game to game it can be spotty.
Zyks is a little different. He is very hit or miss, but when he is hit he is an absolute machine. He can stick handle in a phone both, beat defenders one on one, possess the hell out of the puck, and cycle very well. Problem is he often tries too hard which can lead to some mistakes in the O-zone and on the transition. His production is disappointing, but you have to remember that the Reign are a very thin offensive group. Zykov is usually playing wing with Crescenzi at C and Jordan Samuels-Thomas on the other side. It is not a firepower driven team outside of Dowd/Brodzy/Kempe. Zykov does a lot of work for that line, and they are usually good when he is good. However, his relentless puck hounding rarely gets rewarded with production.
Finally, Brodzinski. The more and more I watch the more I like his game. He too can be a bit too perimeter, like Auger, but man does this guy have a rifle of a shot. Such a veiled release on the wrister that when he starts firing more regularly he WILL beat goalies. I think he models his game too much on a power forward's game right now though (Has even described himself as one). He opts to drive the net rather than find seams in the slot or out high. He can beat goalies from out high but gets caught in the mindset of grinding it out. He is also really really good on the transition. Probably the best winger on the team in transitioning out of the zone. That may have a lot to do with Dowd being such a good C though. Guy is always available to his wings. I think once Brodzy starts firing more he is going to be solid goal scorer. Has to find that area in the ice though on a nightly basis where he can grip it and rip it.
Anyways, those are my three "Reports" on those guys as I see it.
Maybe of some interest to some of you, wrote a report on the offensive struggles of the Reign about a week ago.
