Update:

5:55 to go in the 2nd period

4-1 Reign
Mersch 1
Kempe with the hat trick all in the first 15 minutes of the 2nd period. 2 were PP. I'm sure the refs had something to do with it

Long-term he'll slot into the center position?

I believe so. He has been forced to the wings thanks to playing with men at very young ages (coachs will naturally go with more experienced players in the middle) but longterm I see him as a center. That's where he played in junior and I think it's his natural position. He'll have the versatility and speed of a guy like Carter though (not saying he will that exact type just speed and natural C that can play wing).

Well that bodes well for the Kings in a year or two since the Kings are not strong at center overall. Shore can be moved to the 4th line center position. Weal will be gone, Andy can play wing. I assume they'll sign a 3rd-line center, and Kempe can get his NHL feet wet playing wing until taking over the 3rd-line center position eventually.

Thanks, for the highlights, Ziggy.

My Reign NHL ready list after watching 5 games in person:

1) Mersch
2) Dowd
3) Gravel-close

Within 3 years
Zykov
Kempe

I don't get the hype
Auger

4th line sleeper
Crescenzi

Raw potential
Leslie
McDermind

OT: Ducks are going to have a very good player in Mr. Ritchie. He is a handful down low, a good skater, with a nose for the net. He is only 19, but already a bit of a beast mode player.

I think any of the top three could hypothetically step in if they were called up and represent at the NHL level.

Sounds like another great night for the Reign, 4-0 over the Stockton Heat (Flames). League leading 4th shutout for Budaj, hat trick for Jordan Samuels-Thomas, goal for Backman. Sounds like after the Reign took a big lead it got goony, with three big fights: Sabourin and 6'5" Dustin Stevenson, Bissonette and 6'7" Hunter Smith, and MacDermid and good ol Colton Orr (oops). Sounds like MacDermid got rocked at the end of it, and there was tons of netcrashing by the Flames as per Reign Insider. OH, and Mersch was denied on a penalty shot after a Dowd goal was waived off for some reason. Sounds like fun, people are gunning for the best ;)

Reign are tied for second with the Gulls based upon winning pct., instead of tied for first due to points, because of the weird schedule the AHL is playing with less games for west coast teams.

Nic Dowd mentioned to me that he'd like it if somebody tracked faceoffs, so I do so here. Also, thoughts/GIFs on Mersch, Brodzinski, Backman, Ebert, Zykov, and Kempe:

Reign #FancyStats Recap: A New Stat

You might be right in the end, but for now, Stothers is managing his defensive zone draws; I saw Crescenzi in Kempe's place on Kempe's line multiple times over the weekend.

Sounds like another great night for the Reign, 4-0 over the Stockton Heat (Flames).

FWIW, the Heat controlled play for most of the first two periods. While there were some score effects involved, as Ontario had a 3-0 lead after the opening frame, Stothers wasn't happy with the team's execution.

Thanks Sheng!

Looking at the first one, no wonder Dowd wants faceoffs tracked  He's monstrous at them though, that's great.

I'm surprised how low-budget the streams and statkeeping are in the AHL.

Last's night recap...I think it's the most detailed out there! Plus exclusive quotes from Brodzinski & Budaj plus Stothers praises Dowd & Backman, while Backman toots his linemate Kempe's horn.

Reign Recap: No Holiday for Ontario PK

Reign Postgame Quotes: Brodzinski, Budaj, Stothers, Backman

I'm surprised how low-budget the streams and statkeeping are in the AHL.

It's shocking too considering how much they charge for the AHL Live package...almost triple Game Center!!!!

Thanks, Sheng.. I read both of those articles. I think you were the only ones with a Brodzinski quote? We've lucked out with the great Reign coverage by JftC, RI, and MM. What was the Budaj tweet about, btw?

Thanks for the support! Yea, I was the only one to talk to Brodzinski...I figure he's going to start scoring soon, so better grab him before he does and everybody wants him haha. He really did have an especially excellent first.

Budaj deleted the tweet after the game, but you can find info about it here.

It's just a matter of time for Jonny B. The first 1/2 year of your pro career is rough. I like to read interviews with players as they go through the development arc, including those not expected to be in the NHL but still be valuable contributors in the AHL.

Budaj's tweet was pretty funny, at least that's the way I took it.

Lowry expected to play tonight.

Also, Bartosak has been sent to Manchester for conditioning. It wil be interesting to see how Stothers splits the playing time with Budaj, who's been the best goalie in the league, but definitely not a prospect. I'd expect Emery to be let go.

As for Brodzinski, I agree that he will come around. It takes to make that adjustment. Especially from college to the pros. I remember afte the first half of the season, I felt Mersch was the most disappointing player. By the end of the season, he was arguably the best player on the team.
