Nice quality vids.

Mersch with some good moves. Brodzinski noticeable a couple times. Samuels-Thomas got a monster hit leveled on him. Nic Dowd's slicing of two defenders was a thing of beauty.

I should have mentioned Brodzinski earlier. Yesterday was his best game to date (in the 4 games I have seen him live). He got some PP time finally, and made some nice plays offensively. He just hasn't had a good offensive center to play with yet, playing mostly on the 3rd line. The Reign depth at center is very poor this season. With Newbury injured, after Dowd, you have Crescenzi and Horvat. Arnold played center last night. They tried Kempe the night before. Crescenzi has been decent, but he really is a solid 3rd/4th line guy.

Mersch from Backman and Zykov! PP goal. 1-1.

Reign with best PK in the AHL. Around 94%.

Crescenzi was typically the 4th line center last season so that's quite a promotion for him. Weal was 1st line center, seems to me Dowd was the 3rd line center but maybe it was the 2nd. Newbury's a real loss.

On the PP again from the same offender.

Those highlights were great. MacDermid beat that guy senseless. And I'll admit to maybe sleeping a bit on Dowd, he actually looks like he can be a depth player already.

I'm bad luck. Reign fall 4-2 against the Barracuda. Mersch and Horvat with the goals. Really impressed with Zykov, Mersch, Dowd and Gravel tonight.

So what does Stuts have against Leslie? 1 GP out of 8 games played, and a back to back to back situation and no game time? And this on a team struggling for offense. 4 goals in three games. Leslie had an assist in the first two minutes he was on the ice in the only game he played.

I went to the game he played in... It takes stones to play defense in a Kings/Reign jersey and wear #8

Sorry for posting this 2 days late, but I went to the game on (Halloween) Saturday at 3PM.
Hadn't been to a hockey game in over a decade, and it was a blast.

But 1st ...
IMO, the entertainment level of AHL hockey, on a scale of "10" is:
"11".
Seats were at center ice, 3/4 of the way up, great view.
Nice building.
Parking is easy and only $5.
I highly recommend going to see The Reign if you live in SoCal.
I plan to go to a few more games this season, for sure.
Also, check out Luxe Asian/Internat'l Buffet before/after the game. It's quite nearby the arena, and it is, frankly, dynamite.
Also, I noticed the building was barely 1/2-full, if that.
Is it normally that empty, or was that just because it was Halloween? Where was everybody?

Hockey impressions:
The Reign showed good structure you could clearly see, with nice, quick breakouts, well-executed reverses to get open ice, and excellent defensive positioning. They look well-coached.

Dowd was a -2 for the game, and got beat on a play resulting in a goal 24 seconds into the game, but I still feel he played well most of the game, and showed some nice quickness with the puck, as well as making some nice defensive and offensive plays. His effort seems relentless, no matter where he is on the ice.
On that 1st goal, the puck squirted under his stick just as he battled to get to it. The puck got thru and an opposition player made a nice pass, and Bam! 1-0.
I still think Dowd will be a King, though. Perfect bottom-6 C.

Gravel
looked as masterful as any Reign player, both on Defense and offense. Looks like another keeper to me. He looks sure of himself out there, and very much in control.
Note: Gravel played the right side, pretty much all game.
Forbort looked pretty good, but a notch below Gravel. He skated well, moved the puck well, and looked solid most of the time.

Zykov got off 2 or 3 nice shots and, made a slick behind-the-back pass, and looked promising, but not dominant at this point.

Mersch looked smooth with the puck, and played repeatedly right on the goalie's doorstep when in the O-zone. Looked pretty good overall, but was not dominant in this game.
Kempe looked quick and agile, made a couple of nice plays (including a slick, evasive move to keep control of the puck along the boards), and he had an assist on the tying goal. I can see the promise, and he should be getting better and better as the season progresses.

My primary impression of the team, aside from looking good in many aspects, is that they seemed to lack top-6 offensive punch. With Weal, O'Neal, Miller and Shore gone, the explosive crew from last season
is no more.
The loss of center Kris Newbury to injury now puts everything onto the shoulders of Nic Dowd, who, while talented, is not a classic top-line C, even in the mold of a guy like Jordan Weal, who was so effective with the club last season, even though Dowd is more likely to make the NHL, IMO, due to his gritty, defensive style.

The team is good defensively and looks to have good cohesion, but may suffer from a lack of goals this season, unless they can sign a capable AHL-level C, or at least until they get Newbury back in Dec.

Other teams can totally focus on the top line with so little
scoring support, so scoring may be tough.

Great game, though.

And for sure ...
I'll be back.

Thanks for the thoughts!

I've noticed a lot of people praising Gravel over Forbort. Can't wait to see him get a crack at the NHL too.

Willie Mitchel 2.0?

Thanks you for your review. The crowd was packed on opening day, and about 1500 or so less for game 2. The games this past weekend suffered due to Halloween scheduling. I'm sure there were probably a lot of Halloween parties on Friday night, and the Saturday game time was not conducive for a lot of parents and kids who were going to partake of activities in the early evening, so the crowd was very poor on the game you attended. It should be much more crowded during the season on weekends, especially when it does not conflict with holidays and there is no Kings game on simultaneously (another reason for poor attendance, the Kings-Nashville was on Sat afternoon).

So far of the players I have seen in four games, for forwards, I think Mersch and quite frankly Dowd could step in and play today in the NHL. Dowd is a smart crafty passer with an underrated shot, he just has to be a little smarter with his passes at times, which can be risky leading to opposition breakouts. He is a good face-off man and pretty good defensively. He is a better offensive player than Shore IMO, and a touch behind Weal offensively due to Weal's skating and ability to make things happen around him.

Forbort was much better in the game you saw him play than the night before, he was pretty bad and turnover the puck in OT to give San Antonio the win (same thing happened to Dowd the next day).

Gravel is a very solid D man with more offensive upside than Forbort. Plays a very similar game and I can see him as an NHL'er. Ebert not ready for primetime, nor is Raine, Schultz (not a fan but obviously he could be recalled), LoVerde (good, but I'm a bit disappointed overall, thought he was a bit better), or MacDermind. MacDermind is big and hits like a truck, he is strictly a defensive player with limited puck handling skills and prone to turnovers. Staff likes him, and he has been getting a lot of minutes and has played every game,so he should continue to improve. I am not sold on his hockey IQ, but I've been wrong before. Could be a sleeper in a couple years. I've made it clear on these boards I would like to see Leslie get some playing time. He is very smooth skater and offensively gifted for a D man with a hard shot, but obviously needs to play strong defensively first to get some more playing time.

So, I find myself in the position of "opposing" fan here, almost, kinda. I mean, I'm definitely going to pull for the Gulls to win, but I'm also definitely pulling for the Reign to win all their other games.

I'm also going to scout my own guys for us here.

Gibson has had his issues at times (5 goals in 22 minutes earlier this season against Bakersfield), and was pulled from the game two periods into two games ago with an apparent back strain. However, tonight he was the reason the Gulls weren't down 4-2 at the end of regulation instead of tied. There were season-highlight-worthy saves in the first period against San Antonio.

Ritchie (#20) is the one to watch on offense, hands down. He's 2nd in the league in goal scoring (8) and leads the league on the power play (5). He's big, and he's got a nose for the puck. Tonight he was on a line with Jackman, who was freshly sent down from Anaheim.

Friberg went up to Anaheim today, so I doubt he'll be sent back down in time for Thursday's game -- he's another weapon in the Gulls' offensive arsenal.

The Gulls offense seems to try to set up a cycle, but when they actually score, it's very frequently either on the power play (9 for 33 on the season) or on an opportunistic break of some kind or other.

Speaking of breaks, the Gulls' defense is vulnerable to giving up rushes the other way. It'll look solid for long stretches, and then suddenly someone will seem to lose their mind and the goalie has to pull the bacon out of the fire.

I won't be making it up to Ontario for the game, but look forward to the reports!

I've been to a few Reign games this year and wanted to chime in on my player assessments:

Forwards:

Mersch - this guy is the most NHL-ready forward on the team, hands down. I feel like if you put him on a line with Kopitar and Gaborik, he would start cleaning up. What he did in second half of the season last year was incredible. I'm sure some would have put him in the running for playoff MVP as well (22 points in 18 games). His production has been pretty good this year too considering that he hsa new linemates who probably aren't at the same skill level as what he was accustomed to last season.

Dowd - he doesn't always show up on the scoresheet, but you just feel that he is going to have increased ice time this year and take a step forward.

Zykov - I went to one of the games where he scored 2 goals. He is a pretty dynamic player. As others have said, I don't see him as this dominant guy..but for his first year in the AHL he will have a pretty successful campaign.

Kempe - This guy has tremendous upside. Fast, fast, fast and with a good scoring touch..he just seems to need more seasoning at this level. You can tell that he is young and needs to mature a little bit. But, once he does..he will definitely get a look from the big club. Almost scored on an end to end play at one of the last games I went to.

Defensemen:

Gravel - Out of all the defensemen here, I believe he is the one that is progressing the fastest. I'd really like to see where he is at at the end of the year. I can definitely see the Willie Mitchell comparisons. I was at a game last week where the Reign scored 4 goals in just a few minutes after being down 3-0 and he had a nice one from the blue line.

Forbort - He has been solid every time I have seen him. It's going to be really interesting to see what the Kings do with this guy. I don't see them being able to keep Gravel and Forbort - hopefully they pick the right guy. We all know that defensive prospects usually take longer to develop. The Kings are taking their time with both.

Dowd is more of a solid 3/4 line C as well.

I agree with everything you said. They need both Forbort and Gravel in the future, because they play perfect together. They have good chemistry, and with all the reach and skating ability there for tall guys, they are very hard to score on and very hard to forecheck.

Dowd is an NHL solid 3/4 C. If Weal is going to be up, and not in top 6, then Dowd belongs up.

Thanks for the thoughts!

I've noticed a lot of people praising Gravel over Forbort. Can't wait to see him get a crack at the NHL too.

The praise is warranted about a bit better offensive upside, but it's not where either of them will make their paycheck in the show. With that said, Forbort is a bit better defensively, and even a little quicker on his feet and makes better defensive use of his reach. With that said, Gravel can play the right side, which makes him a good asset to have. I see Greene and Ehrhoff gone next year, and maybe even another D via trade for F scoring, and both Forbort and Gravel move in.

Don't you just love being able to say seeing them live!!!!

I appreciate the detailed reviews. I hope to make a game this season. It's a much shorter drive this year, heh heh. HF Bruins fans are pretty high on Colin Miller so far. While he's mostly been on the third pairing with Morrow, he's also been paired with Chara for several shifts. I wonder if we have any defensemen in the pipeline who will have that impact. The PMD like Ebert and Leslie have potential but, I don't know.

Tough game tonight against the Gulls. Ritchie appears to be the real deal for the Ducks. Seems to be dominating AHL competition at 19 years old. Not good for the Reign or the Kings.

Hopefully Stuts will let Leslie out of prison tonight, because with Newbury out, our ability to score had gone out the window and we will needs some more offensive oriented players.

I understand Lowry will not play tonight. Will we score more than 1 goal?

The PMD like Ebert and Leslie have potential but, I don't know.

Not overly impressed with Ebert so far, and he doesn't get to play in every game. I really liked what I saw in Leslie in the one game he played (command the PP like a boss, and had an assist his first two minutes he played), but the coach disagrees, and Leslie has been riding the pine.

He's certainly a prime candidate for the Cy Young this year (8-1=9pts in 8 games). Friberg was a noticeable presence for the Ducks in last night's game, and a line of him and Ritchie in a couple years is going to be something the entire Pacific is going to have to watch out for.

The Ducks lost another forward in last night's game, so it's not impossible that the Gulls might lose another first-line player before tonight's puck-drop -- probably not Ritchie, as it seems they're giving him time to develop down in San Diego, but first-line center Sgarbossa might not be available against the Reign, depending on the seriousness of the injury.

I forgot to mention Brodzinski. I know this is his first year but you can tell that when he gets comfortable he is going to start having a much bigger impact on the game. I am really looking forward to seeing how he develops.
