sportsnet listed some players who could go. I think Rielly , Reimer and Ekblad would go if asked.

That would be a good team offensively. It would be great if most agreed to participate. No reason for guys like Nugent, Hall, Monahan, Brodie to not be selected right off the bat. Defence looks crappy but mobile. I would like Campbell to get an invite - still a great skater, veteran, Ekblad's defence partner. Hartnell seems like the kind of player who would be a complete abomination on the larger ice and under IIHF rules. Goaltending is going to be bad.

let's see what we get  it seem pretty interesting. Good point with Iginla, who knows, maybe he could go. I like Savard and Ennis in the conversation too.

I sense that someone is going to weigh in on this topic rather strongly...

That would be me? I'd say take another sip of your Nyquil, Iggy! keep Hockey Canada's ph.# on ignore and go back to sleep. Could have used you 10 years ago...but you couldn't be bothered.

Monahan was selected to go to worlds last year right away and maybe why they listed him as a wild card since Flames could be in the playoffs

that announcement doesn't appear to be imminent, could drag on into the summer....So, we'll probably get the same spiel from HC on Olympic Cycles. The start of a new 1 thus a whole lot of youngsters. Edmonton Oilers aside, the only 1 on your roster I'm not a fan of is Skinner. Curious to see how they apply the Sochi blueprint to a WHC team. not sure if it's possible given the circumstances...

Assuming he's healthy...What's wrong with Skinner? Not a big guy + not a straight line burner...BUT a very dynamic + beautiful skater, who excelled on Big Ice in WC already, even at 18

Somebody mentioned Duchene in conjunction with HC's prerequisite youngsters...A great choice for sure...But as a member of our OG A team, he's a graduate now...not a newbie auditioning for a possible big stage part in the future

Duchene was essentially the 13th forward and has had a poor year. He isn't a lock for future editions of Canada, so I would think he still has something to gain by playing. He seems to have a positive attitude about international hockey, so I think he will go. Duchene has also looked good lately for Colorado, so he definitely has the potential to be a difference maker at this tournament.

Although not a lock for future A teams, by any stretch...Duchene has looked pretty good in a TC uni, and is well suited to Big Ice, again a welcome WC addition to be sure, still don't think he needs to prove anything, at this pt, to HC.

Duchene saw a fair bit of ice , at Sochi, after Tavares went down. Also, not to nitpick, but I would argue our 13th forward was St Louis

I would say that St. Louis and Sharp were trading positions as the 14th forward until the Tavares injury. Both had turns getting scratched, and they seemed to trade wing positions opposite Nash. Duchene was playing, but he didn't really have a position after a short stint with Getzlaf and Perry, at least until Tavares went down.

if Calgary and Los Angeles get eliminated in the 1st round, I am very confident that Brodie, Monahan, and Toffoli all go.
Carter and Doughty are a maybe for me.

Be VERY surprised if DD said yes, ditto Carter. Plus nowadays HC et al. are adverse to making late additions , barring injuries

Elliotte Friedman reported that Jim Nill is the choice to be the GM if/when Dallas misses the playoffs. I'm hoping with Nill being GM, we'll get Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin as well.

That would be good. Nill is a good GM, and as you suggest it can only help in getting Benn and Seguin.

There might actually be a team worth watching this year with the amount of players of talent perhaps being available...interesting.

Even more interesting they bring back Mr. Nill, if any of you might recall, 2004 World Championships in Prague, Canada won, Mr. Nill was the GM.

We'll be seeing a good team I have a hunch. I sure as hope so at least, this tournament will be incredible with it being in the Mecca of World Championship locations, Prague.

They need to get Captain CanadA Ryan Smyth on the phone and just have him talk to these players that aren't in the playoffs. Unless your hurt you should still be playing Hockey in May.

i agree

That's certainly welcomed news. Not sure I'm thrilled with another tournament where Ruff is the coach, but if that's what it takes to get our Dallas boys onboard, then I'll take it.

Watching the NBC broadcast of Philly/Pitt yesterday, Doc and Co made frequent reference to Mason being on Hockey Canada's radar for the WHC... despite Mason's recent comments that he's not interested, are they just not in the loop or has Mason subsequently indicated he is open to an invite?

As a Sabres fan, it would be great to see Ennis tear it up in the World Champs.

As a fan of Team Latvia, I'd prefer if he stayed home.

I would personally wait for the end of the 1st round so Canada could get Dubnyk/Crawford/Price/Fleury/Holtby...

You make it sound as if our players are tripping all over themselves to hop the first flight to Europe the minute their teams are out of the Cup hunt and we have a plethora of options. They aren't and we don't. And while I'm not at all a fan of Steve Mason, he has had a pretty decent year statistically, so if he's up for committing early, then get him on board and let's get at it. Adding 1 of the goalies you mentioned would be good if we can get 1, but I seriously doubt Price ever plays this event. But here's an idea, how about having something of a training camp in Canada to prepare instead of gathering in Switzerland a week before the tournament starts.

yeah, that might be a good option. but there also need to be at least two pre-tournament games imo.

of course players eliminated from the playoffs maybe aren't so much eager to play at the WHC, but I think (if Mason doen't go) a goaltender like Holtby would be a good addition.

You do realize that last year, the first time the coaching staff addressed the players was a day before their 1st pre-tourney game in Switzerland a WEEK before the tournament was scheduled to begin. You do realize that this is piss poor preparation, considering all European team have at least 6 weeks to prepare and play up to 8 pre-tournament games. Now I realize we can't do that... but there should be at the very least a mini-training camp in Canada before leaving for Europe to play our 2 pre-tournament games.

What's interesting is that Jagr has apparently agreed that at age 43, and after a long NHL rigorous schedule, he's up to the challenge. I'll have a good chuckle at some of our 23 year old players and the multitude of excuses they come up with... "Oh, I tweaked my ankle in a game before Christmas, I think I need time for it to fully heal. + I really need to head up to Georgian Bay and open the cottage for the summer."
