when do rosters have to be set by?

there is no date, just a roster limit of 25. you can add players throughout the tournament up until you reach the max 25 man roster.

Canada normally doesn't add too many players once on the tournament begins. 1 maybe 2 players. Russia tends to add whenever their players become available, because they don't generally refuse to play.

Gotta wonder if Hamilton will go..

We are seeing a ton of forwards accept but we only have Ekblad on D so far.

Canada's D and goaltending will be suspect unless we get some bigger names.

Team Canada has interest in number of Leafs for worlds but waiting for year end medicals on Jonathan Bernier, Morgan Rielly and 2-3 others. Rielly will likely easily pass his medical and go to worlds.

Likely Rielly will go i highly doubt Bernier will. I also have no clue who the other two members of the leafs team canada has interest in are one might be Reimer since he has played at worlds before.

from iihf.com
Player Entry
The teams submit the names of the participating players at the first Championship Directorate.
The maximum number of players allowed on a Team Registration Form at the beginning of the World Championship is 22 skaters and 3 goalies. The minimum is 15 skaters and 2 goalies.
At the first Directorate meeting, the teams must name at least the minimum number of 15 skaters and 2 goalkeepers. The players entered must be present at the championship venue by the time of the Directorate meeting.
The remaining players up to the allowed maximum of 22 + 3 must be submitted for players' control two hours before any of the following championship games. Players can be added throughout the tournament until the roster is full.
During a game, a team may enter (dress) 20 skaters and 2 goalkeepers on the Official Game Sheet, with the emergency goalkeeper standing by if a goalie entered to the Official Game Sheet is unable to play.

There is no mention of when the first directorate is, but usually teams announce their rosters like three-five days before the tournament.

Interesting adds, if these rumours are true. I have additional respect for Giroux and Spezza in particular. Giroux has legitimate reason to be displeased with Hockey Canada after he was the most egregious cut from the Olympic team, and Spezza expressed surprise and disappointment at not even being invited to the Olympic orientation camp. I'm also happy if Seguin participates. He's never played for Canada in an IIHF tournament before.

While it's good to see some quality names, the defence is once again shaping up to be a disappointment. This team is clearly going to end up as the most talented in the tournament, but the teams in 2012 and 2013 were also the most talented and their shaky foundations (goaltending and defence) proved to be issues. I wouldn't be surprised if Canada has the same problem again.

Canada should save some spots until certain series are over. The loser between Vancouver and Calgary could yield some good defencemen (betwen Tanev, Brodie and Russell) and if the Islanders lose to Washington it would be good to see if Tavares goes, though he isn't needed as much as some quality defencemen are. I hope that Canada doesn't repeat 2013 when they invited Burrows over Tavares for unknown reasons. The Chicago - Nashville series could be the motherload for Canada, but who knows if Keith or Weber would go. I still don't understand why Weber wasn't there last year, particularly as there is no indication that he was even invited.

Last, it's a joke for guys like Couture and Johansen to turn down a chance to play on this team. Couture hasn't played for Canada since he was 18 and should be looking for something positive after such a debacle of a season in San Jose. Johansen is not yet at the level of a player like Giroux or Seguin, and has no excuse not to go. He's done nothing in the playoffs and nothing for Canada at the senior level, so provided he's healthy (which he presumably is) he should be on this team. Simple enough. These guys are just not good enough to walk onto high level editions of Team Canada, and I hope this counts against them to a degree.

Sean Couturier is very unlikely now when Cody Eakin was selected. I was hoping that he could get an invitation.

I expected Eakin given Nill's involvement (I also expect at least one of Daley and Demers) but that hopefully won't preclude Couturier. He's one of Canada's best defensive forwards and should be given a shot on this team, regardless of whether players like Eakin and O'Reilly are already there.

What about Michael Del Zotto? He was phenomenal for the Flyers most of the year, especially at the end of season. I think he would play very well on big ice.

Brayden Schenn would be also good addition somewhere on the right wing, given his recent play for Flyers. In the case there is none better available. 8 points in his last 6 games. He found his game on RW. But he might not be the best option for big ice.

This is Sportsnets projection. I think all these guys should at least get invited.

FORWARDS

Logan Couture – Many thought he was snubbed of a spot on last year’s Olympic team and this will be a great chance for him to wear the maple leaf on his chest.
Jamie Benn – The Olympic gold medallist is coming off yet another solid season with the Stars.
Tyler Seguin – He was in the Art Ross and Hart conversation until his knee injury.
Claude Giroux – No one in the NHL has more points than Claude Giroux over the past five seasons.
Scott Hartnell – Had 11 goals in 15 games in March.
Jordan Eberle – One of the most productive forwards in the NHL since January.
Ryan O’Reilly – One of the best two-way centres in the game.
Jarome Iginla – This could be one of the last chances Iginla has to represent his country. He would be captain material.
Tyler Ennis – He’s like a water bug in the offensive zone. Highly entertaining to watch.
Jeff Skinner – Has represented Canada at the worlds three times in the past.
Ryan Johansen – Another quality season makes his off-season contract dispute seem like a lifetime ago.
Adam Henrique – One of the few good, young players in New Jersey.
Brandon Pirri – Coming off a remarkably unique campaign.

DEFENCE

Morgan Rielly – Slick skater was on the team last year.
Aaron Ekblad – This would be a great experience for the 18-year-old.
Tyson Barrie – One of the most underrated blueliners in the league.
Trevor Daley – Underappreciated veteran last played in this tournament in 2006.
Brent Burns – Leads all Canadian-born defencemen in points as of Wednesday.
David Savard – Coming off an impressive season in Columbus.
Michael Del Zotto – The pending RFA had a nice bounce-back season.

GOALIES

Cam Ward – Proved this season he still has some fight.
Calvin Pickard – Bright future for Varlamov’s backup.
James Reimer – Maybe wearing a different coloured maple leaf on his chest could cleanse the palate after a forgettable season.

WILD CARDS

Connor McDavid – There’s no rule saying you need to play in the NHL to be on Team Canada. Hockey Canada officials gave Ryan Murray a chance in 2012 prior to him going second overall to the Blue Jackets. If the Erie Otters are eliminated earlier than expected in the Ontario Hockey League playoffs he’ll get invited.
Andrew Hammond – The feel good story of the NHL season has never represented Canada at a major tournament.
Sean Monahan – Played for Canada as a rookie last season.
Bryan Little – Dangerous offensively and kills penalties well.
Mike Hoffman/Mark Stone – These Ottawa youngsters were a big part of the Sens’ turnaround.
Curtis Lazar – World Junior and World Championship gold in the same year might be too good to pass up, should the Sens miss the playoffs or face an early exit.
Kris Russell/TJ Brodie – These Flames defenders both had terrific seasons.
Tyler Myers – His play has improved since being traded by Buffalo.

Avs beat writer says Duchene, O'Reilly, MacKinnon, and Barrie are in.

Nothing official, but I’ve been told Avalanche forwards Matt Duchene, Ryan O’Reilly and Nathan MacKinnon and defenseman Tyson Barrie are expected to play for Canada at the Czech Republic-hosted World Championship beginning May 1 in Prague and Ostrava. Avs/Lake Erie goalie Calvin Pickard, according to Sportsnet, is being considered along with full-time NHLers Cam Ward and James Reimer.

The Denver Post is reporting O'Reilly, Duchene, MacKinnon and Barrie are all in.

Edit: too late. I'm glad team Canada is looking towards including this many young players. Will be exciting to watch!

The DP also says Iginla is not going to happen.

Pickard is probably unlikely to get an invite but that's cool if he's being considered. He might even be better than Mike Smith right now.

I don't think he's being considered, that was just a fantasy roster Sportsnet put together. Chambers in all his usual brilliance took it be speculation.

I mean it's possible he's being considered, but there isn't anything to base that on at the moment.

It's looking to be quite a good squad this year. A favorite for a medal, for sure.

It'll be especially nice to see RHN, MacKinnon and Ekblad getting an opportunity with the national squad, seeing how all three will be denied that chance at the so-called "world cup".

Interesting to hear about MacKinnon... I didn't expect him to play given how his season ended. The Avalanche writer suggests that MacKinnon is looking to impress Hockey Canada... imagine that. Couture and Johansen disagree with that strategy I guess.

The forward group is going to be awesome and I would guess they wait for the 1st round too.

Maybe Nate is under the impression that the Young Gunz team doesn't get first dibs on the U24 players and he still has a shot at the real team. I'm a big Mackinnon fan, but I don't think he should be on this team...and for the same reasons why last year I objected to Scheiffle being on the team. A young player, not having a particularly strong season coming off the IR...But hey, if you have a heartbeat and a valid passport, that's enough for Hockey Canada and the Skoda Invitational.

I'm with on the Couture and Johansen situation. I don't know what some of these guys got going on in their heads and where they think they stand in the hockey pecking order, but there's something out of whack. But what can you do? It is what it is.

Let's just hope we have a little better preparation than last year, can muster up a few good d-men and a goalie once the 1st. rd. is done, otherwise it will be just another repeat of the last 5 years.

I'm thinking they won't be so motivated to play for Canada. I strongly suspect that Nugent, MacKinnon adn Ekblad bleed Young Gunz (insert colour here).

Their decisions are idiotic. Simple as that.

Yes, forwards are fine but the defence and goaltending project to be weak. The teams in 2010, 2011 and 2014 were just bad. The 2012 and 2013 teams (2012 in particular) were looking pretty good and basically lost due to bad luck. It's not like the other countries are sending all star teams to this tournament.

Seems to be quite a roster that's lining up. If Canada does win they will be holding

Olympic Gold
World Championship
World Junior

When was the last time that was done?

Canada held all three in early part of 2005, having won WJC title, until Czech Republic won WC in May (Canada was a champion in 2004).

Are we certain Johansen and Couture declined the invitation? If so, a very curious decision on both their parts as presumably they're in the mix for a roster spot on the 2016/2018 teams. I'm not terribly surprised by Couture refusing to go, to be honest, but I am by Johansen. This will not help their case, however, when players of similar quality like Hall and Duchene are making their way over (and in Duchene's case, repeatedly and enthusiastically).
