If you think Russia outplayed Canada regardless of shot totals you must have been watching another game. In terms of zone time Canada clearly had more, the reason they lost was poor finishing and suspect goaltending. It seems you really have a deep hatred for Canada not going to ask your reasons be they good or stupid but in terms of junior Canada seems to have a bit of goaltending trouble. Believe what you may about the best junior system, the Canadian system is made to out players in the NHL for them to excel which is what they're doing. I love how won game gives you the feeling to critique other Nations entire development system.

I didn't see the game, but I do agree that the imbalance in shots on goal is troublesome in this respect: Since 2012, Russian WJC teams have had a problem with teams spending too much time in their zone and getting off too many shots. Russia can't count on goaltenders making 50 saves on 51 shots - if they can't get the puck out of their zone and away from their net, its just a matter of time before those pucks start going in! Bragin had his D men standing up at the blue line in the SSS, and I don't know what they did last night. But from reports that I read in this thread, it sounded like the Canadians moved their furniture in to the Russian zone and set up around the net. That has to be corrected to have any realistic chance at winning a medal!

Anyone know if Sorokin is the undisputed number one goalie?

I'm writing an article about the top ten players to watch at this tournament and Russian goaltending looks so damn deep (like usual). Sorokin was out of this world last night. Last time I saw that dominant a goaltending performance was probably Ben Scrivens' 59 save shutout for the Oilers last year. Him alone could win Russia this abbreviated tournament IMO.

He would be my number one but Shestyorkin and Kostin both have good numbers. Any idea anyone?

Well Canada is a decent sized country with a large percentage of hockey fans so you're bound to find as many idiots as smart fanatics. Those who think they will win without much competition know nothing of international hockey at the junior level but I havn't seen as much chest thumping arrogance as you are claiming. Also it is your opinion that other country has caught up at the junior level but junior level is exactly what it is, for juniors. Many European teams play together from age 15 or earlier there is many similarities with the style they play so even the ones who haven't played together seem to be able to gel decently well. Majority of the Americans have played together with the NTDP or USA youth camps where they were pretty much instructed with the same philosophies. Chemistry is a big factor at the youth level same with goal-tending that can't be denied but when it comes to post junior career many Canadians who looked poor in the WJC or didn't make the team become NHL stars which is the point. Our victories in the WJC over the years were mostly due to outcoaching, clutch goaltending performances and some luck. Our recent losses have mainly been due to the opposite.

Excellent points! And your point about Canada spending so much time in the Russian zone is reinforced by the shots on goal totals. While shots on goal can be a very misleading statistic, the odds are certainly in favor of teams that spend a lot of time in the opposing zone.

For now Shesterkin and Sorokin are both on top. As stated and confirmed by the head coach. Tomorrow's exhibition game will be probably given to Shesterkin. And I still highly doubt there will be a significant change to their parity.

New lines:

"Red": Rafikov - Valiev, Buchnevich - Barbashev - Leshchenko.

"Blue": Gavrikov - Cherepanov, Tkachev - Kamenev - Tolchinskiy.

"Green": Sharipzyanov - Paigin, Bryukvin - Fischenko - Mamin.

"Yellow": Provorov - Bryntsev, Korenev - Kraskovskiy - Morozov.

"Black": Vereshchagin - Yudin, Goldobin - Okulov - Golyshev.

"White": Sharov, Dergachyov.

Pretty small sample size there though, no?

Scherbak chose not to attend an important summer camp, so a lot was riding on his SSS performance......especially in terms of effort.
Not only was Scherbak mediocre at SSS, but his defensive effort was lacking in those games.

I don't care how talented a player is, if he's not committed 100% and puts in a lazy effort = it's no WJC for you.

They cross the pond for more exposure to NA scouts to get that shiny spot at the NHL draft. It goes both ways. It's less exposure to the NT coaching staff. So he'd have to use his chances even if they are few to make the team. His refusal to attend the summer camp again to impress ppl in NA more was not helping things too. If he'd look anything special at the SSS he'd be in. He simply didn't. The coach clearly stated he was not pleased with his showing and that there are others who are better.
