It's not the end of the world, and it is an opportunity for some the kids to make some noise. But, they'll get killed against a team like the Pens.

I know people think prospects are always the answer, but they are not. Moore moves into the top-9, Lindberg takes over 4C, Hayes gets more seasoning.

Lets say its the optimistic time frame. About 2 months. But then he needs to rehab, and get his fitness back to game shape. Then he needs to get the rust off. It's more like 3 months, maybe more until he is back to himself.

That's a long time to go without the #1 center.

Can Miller and Hayes handle the increase in responsibility, yet? Lombardi was being looked at as a 4th line winger, now he needs to potentially fill in as a 3rd line center.

And the worst thing that Stepan and the Rangers can do is rush him back into the lineup too early.

I believe some are downplaying this situation.

Wouldn't mind letting Hayes play 3C personally. We need a large center who actually has offense on this team, haven't had one of those in ages. And letting him play in the first few weeks of the season wouldn't exactly be throwing him into the fire.

If he actually sticks that would be a huge boost come playoff time.

edit: while Lombardi can probably fill the gap adequately he isn't going to be a game changer later in the year and probably won't even be around when Stepan comes back. Frankly I feel like he was signed just as a spare and to motivate JT in camp for a spot.

With all this said...

If this team carries the attitude that we've all grown to love into this season, anything can happen. These guys compete and lay it all on the line. Stepan being out hurts us, but if the motors are running and we get our grind going, it may not hurt us as bad as we are thinking.

What's so optimistic about 2 months? Time frame is 4-6 weeks to get back to skating, this is a broken bone not a concussion, unless Stepan has other underlying medical issues it's pretty well documented on how long a bone takes to heal.

This could be a possibility. But I think this situation is less about thinking prospects are the answer, and more about trying to weigh the pros and cons of a guy like Miller or Hayes in a top 6 role over a guy like Moore.

Any other situation I would agree, and you could be right, but as of right now I don't think anyone knows for sure who is going to play where.

I'd be really, really, really uncomfortable with Hayes at C right now. I think he could slot in as a winger, but he needs more pro development if he's going to be effective at center.

Agree.

Without even seeing play this year id be more comfortable with Lindberg.

I think Dom Moore slides up to the top 2 lines and then you see Lindberg/Lombardi, Brassard and Miller as the other 3.

Hello again guys.

A Nash-Brassard-Zuccarello first line looks even more plausible now. Question is, does Miller step into a top 6 role with players like Kreider and MSL, or is that left to someone else?

Welcome back.

AV's comments earlier today made it sound as if he'd give Moore first crack at sliding up.

I apologize if discussed earlier in thread but any McIlrath updates out of camp? Is there a reason he didn't play against Devils? Any info much appreciated.

What are the options for Nejezchleb? Do they have to sign him to an ELC before the season starts or can he play on an AHL contract?

Still really dislike the idea of Nash on LW and of loading up the Brassard line. Brassard and Zucc are good enough to carry a LW, and Nash good enough to carry a line if it's well constructed.

Guess I will wait To see how it looks.

Different group of skaters played that game, he's in group B which will be skating against Chicago.

Hopefully McIlrath gets both Philly games. The Filthys have been scrapping and getting chippy multiple times in each of their games played and I don't want to see any of our kids/skaters have to deal with that.

They dressed Sortini and Rosehill against Toronto.

I'm surprised Noreau didn't get a look in at least one preseason game.
Me too. Especially with back to backs with Philthy coming up. Could use the added size against that goon squad they've dressed so far. More importantly, I wanted to see his improved game.

Yep.

They ended up having something around 6 fights total spanning over the two split-squad games that night. They have 9 fights, not including off setting roughings, boardings etc in the first 3 preseason games.

9 freaking fights in 3 games....in the pre-season.

Derek Mathers, Zack Stortini, Jay Rosehill, Zac Rinaldo, and more have seen active time this preseason. Hopefully a couple are cut from the roster by the time we play them.

I don't want any injuries or unnecessary fights for our guys.

McIlrath literally has to play both those games, ditto with Glass.

For sure, Noreau could have helped in that situation.

So wait, where are the results of the rookie game? Supposedly the Rangers won?
