The cap is going way up in the coming years. If we're able to add Kesler and Dupuis to our 3rd line next year, that becomes the best 3rd line in hockey. BB will develop into a legit RW1 hopefully soon. Shero wants him and I can't blame him.
I wish people would stop saying this about Dupuis. He's a first liner on this team as long as the current regime is intact.
I'm kind of glad I will be at work Monday & Tuesday and distracted from the absurdity that is Trade Deadline Day.
I have a feeling I will feel two emotions after the deadline is over on Tuesday, in regards to what this team will do.
Disappointment & Anger.
Ditto this
What would make you angrier in this situation below...
Losing Despres in the package of Sutter + 1st for Kelser...
OR
Losing Pouliot in the package of Sutter + 1st for Kesler...
For me, it's the 1st one, I think there's too much of a mystery with Pouliot as a pro.
Losing either would really, really suck imo.
If we bring in Kesler, we better play him at wing and have a plan to get a new 3rd line center. Giving up this much for a 3rd line center is awful. I really hope we don't make a stupid trade to revert back to the "3 center model" without ever actually trying out the "4 legit top 6 wingers model."
If he's a top line wing who occasionally plays center, great. If he's a 3rd line center who occasionally plays top line wing, hell no.
The talk is Kesler will play RW with Crosby for now, then revert back to 3C when Dupuis returns next season. Then, I suppose we have to pony up something else to get a rental 3C.
So we're going to blow all our resources to continue to get centers. Lovely.
Am I the only one who wouldn't pay the reported price for Kesler?
You are not alone, OB1.
what else do we have to trade if we give up Sutter, Despres our 1st and 3rd for Kesler?
Well, we can give up our 2015 first rounder next...and so on, and so on, and so on...
Who cares if it makes us a cup contender this year? Kesler will be here for at least the next 2 years. Kesler on Crosby's wing would make a much bigger impact than anyone else. This isn't a trade to make us win the cup this year (though it would help a lot), it's to help us win the cup in the future. When do players of Kesler's level become available? Rarely, at best. If you can ever get him, you do it. The only pieces there that would hurt to lose are either Bennett or Pouliot, hence why I didn't include them in the same deal. Kesler replaces everything Sutter does and more, Despres isn't needed with Pouliot/Dumoulin/Maatta/Harrington, the 1st is in a weak draft and Blueger isn't anything special.
Well, I guess I have to agree to disagree here. Because I believe our future would be brighter with the four assets we keep, especially Despres and our 2014 1st rounder, over a 30-year-old Kesler.
I agree with all of this. I just don't think Kesler is the right guy to sell out for. I don't want to go back to the 3 center model. Especially since we don't have any 3rd line wings to play him with. If we can bring in another 3rd line center and play Kesler at wing, I'd be less annoyed by the deal. At least then we are giving up major assets for a top 6 player.
I was thrilled when we traded Staal because I thought it meant we would finally get Sid and Geno the wings to put us over the top. It hasn't happened, and if we get Kesler to be 3C it likely never will.
If we really think about it, this whole thing is absurd. We don't have enough wingers to make Crosby and Malkin all that they can be, so let's bring in another center who won't be able to play with the wingers he needs to maximize output. Great plan!
Is Ricky Gervais running this Office?
this is just on TSN....
The Pittsburgh Penguins are reportedly ponying up in their efforts to lure Ryan Kesler out of Vancouver.
Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported a proposed deal between the Pens and Canucks that he credited to multiple sources.
“A proposed deal would send Kesler to the Penguins in exchange for Brandon Sutter, two 2014 draft picks — likely a first- and third-round — and the Canucks' choice of defensemen Simon Despres or Brian Dumoulin,†Rossi wrote on Saturday.
Rossi continued to say that it is possible the deal could involve another player going in either direction, but that Penguins' GM Ray Shero was only looking to acquire Kesler.
if this trade goes ahead im going to puke........
Me too, puke.
except Staal was surrounded by good players on the third line. It makes no sense to spend this many assets on a guy who will spend the bulk of his even strength ice time with Tanner Glass. The third line will still suck even with Kesler instead of Sutter.
Exactly.
Last point, I wish we would stop calling Ryan Kesler 'elite'. Sidney Crosby is elite. Evgeni Malkin is elite. Ryan Kesler is very good.
