He leads the league because he's a two-way guy who plays shutdown minutes and is on the PP and PK. He'd be used exactly like Staal was here.

except Staal was surrounded by good players on the third line. It makes no sense to spend this many assets on a guy who will spend the bulk of his even strength ice time with Tanner Glass. The third line will still suck even with Kesler instead of Sutter.

I don't have a good feeling about our proposals being leaked. It probably isn't even true since it's coming from Rossi but either way I don't think it's good for the Pens that the proposals are being leaked to the media. I think Jiggy may have been onto something saying that the leakage is probably coming from the Vancouver side and Rossi is just the dumbass in the media that they're using to drive the price up on other teams.

Yeah. Ray's deals usually come out of nowhere. Vancouver could very well just be driving the price up.

If its goes beyond Sutter+DP+1st, I'm out. And I'd love Kesler here.

He leads the league in TOI for forwards. Do you believe he'd play all those minutes on the third line?

So he'll play 13 ES minutes on the third line. 60% of PK minutes some % of PP minutes, and then what, 5 minutes a game on Sid's wing?

That's really not a viable solution.

are they or is that speculation? I'd be much happier with a Kesler trade if we also got a new 3C.
If we lose a guy upfront (Sutter) we definitely need two, possibly three guys upfront to really make it work and better our team. We have been scouting FLA heavily, that's no secret. From what I know about it all of Boyes, Upshall, Bergenheim and especially Goc are players the pens are or were taking a hard look at. Although it appears FLA is keeping Boyes. But the other three, Goc in particular, fit the bill. He's gonna be a UFA and has a very small cap hit.

Vancouver doesn't exactly have a great "inside person" in the media for the canucks when it comes to trades. It seems a lot of guys know who is in the dog house but nothing when it comes to speculation of an upcoming trade unless it is fairly well known league wide

Except Staal had two decent wingers to play with.

If we ship Sutter off, Kesler is playing 3C, that's just how it is. It's going to be ugly until we can revamp our wing situation in the offseason with the salary cap jump but I think everyone here knows that management can live with Crosby having scrubs on his wing.

Why does a Kesler trade prevent us from bringing in another forward?

But but but hindsight is 20/20!

I'm glad some of you are coming around to realize that Shero and DB need to go.

I don't even think it took hindsight.. look at a healthy Letang, last year he made mistakes that even i make and i play bush league rec hockey, i'm not a professional athlete.

basically we got Mike Green V2.... and now we cant even dump him

Just so I'm clear, here... the expectation would be for Kesler to play full-time 3C (which... I don't think he'd love the idea of, honestly), be the team's leading PKer, get some powerplay minutes and still take the occasional situational shift on Crosby's line (we hope)? Meanwhile leaving both Crosby's line still-neutered for 3/4's of the game and the 3rd line still awful... just with Kesler on it? All the while staying healthy, despite his style of play and past (and current) history?

I know I'm being more than a little sarcastic... but that's seriously what I'm picking up, here. That doesn't seem totally unreasonable/half-insane to anyone else? I know he's marginally better than Jordan Staal... I didn't realize he was a real-life superhero.

So he'll play 13 ES minutes on the third line. 60% of PK minutes some % of PP minutes, and then what, 5 minutes a game on Sid's wing?

HA!

Exactly. Thank you.

That makes me want Kessler more to be honest. Though he'd likely just end up at 3C next year when Dupuis is healthy again
Well Agent M, let's just try to get through this season with Kesler playing well with Sid, and hopefully that'll convince coach disco to possibly leave him there in the coming years.;)

Because we blew our load on the Kesler trade? What do we have left to trade without completely emptying the cupboard?
A guy like Goc could likely be had for a third or fourth rounder next year and a prospect down on the depth chart. It's very doable.

Why wouldn't he? Have you seen our coach? Its like you've never watched a Pens game before.

The same coach that moved Malkin to wing at times to allow Staal in the top 6?

Kesler will get his minutes. And get an offensive role here. DB isn't my favorite, but I'm sure he sees the gaping hole on Sid's RW. Kesler will get his shifts there.

So Rossi says there might be another Canucks or Pens player in the deal. What about Kassian? I'd add Bennett for that.

Crosby deperately needs a winger, so let's trade all of our valuable trade assets on a third line center? And then when he gets here complain that he needs a winger too?

I'm sorry, but this is just a terrible idea. Acquiring Kesler as a 3C won't make us a better team. On balance with giving up our first and someone like Pouliot or Despres, it could make us even worse for the future. Upgrading our third line center won't bring us any closer to the Cup.

This deal will happen, and everything most of us are predicting will happen, like it always does, while the rest of you sit there baffled by it all wondering how Bylsma could be that dumb, again.

The cap is going way up in the coming years. If we're able to add Kesler and Dupuis to our 3rd line next year, that becomes the best 3rd line in hockey. BB will develop into a legit RW1 hopefully soon. Shero wants him and I can't blame him.

I wish people would stop saying this about Dupuis. He's a first liner on this team as long as the current regime is intact.

I'm kind of glad I will be at work Monday & Tuesday and distracted from the absurdity that is Trade Deadline Day.

I have a feeling I will feel two emotions after the deadline is over on Tuesday, in regards to what this team will do.

Disappointment & Anger.

Ditto this

What would make you angrier in this situation below...

Losing Despres in the package of Sutter + 1st for Kelser...
OR
Losing Pouliot in the package of Sutter + 1st for Kesler...

For me, it's the 1st one, I think there's too much of a mystery with Pouliot as a pro.

Losing either would really, really suck imo.

If we bring in Kesler, we better play him at wing and have a plan to get a new 3rd line center. Giving up this much for a 3rd line center is awful. I really hope we don't make a stupid trade to revert back to the "3 center model" without ever actually trying out the "4 legit top 6 wingers model."

If he's a top line wing who occasionally plays center, great. If he's a 3rd line center who occasionally plays top line wing, hell no.

The talk is Kesler will play RW with Crosby for now, then revert back to 3C when Dupuis returns next season. Then, I suppose we have to pony up something else to get a rental 3C.

So we're going to blow all our resources to continue to get centers. Lovely.

Am I the only one who wouldn't pay the reported price for Kesler?

You are not alone, OB1.

what else do we have to trade if we give up Sutter, Despres our 1st and 3rd for Kesler?

Well, we can give up our 2015 first rounder next...and so on, and so on, and so on...

Who cares if it makes us a cup contender this year? Kesler will be here for at least the next 2 years. Kesler on Crosby's wing would make a much bigger impact than anyone else. This isn't a trade to make us win the cup this year (though it would help a lot), it's to help us win the cup in the future. When do players of Kesler's level become available? Rarely, at best. If you can ever get him, you do it. The only pieces there that would hurt to lose are either Bennett or Pouliot, hence why I didn't include them in the same deal. Kesler replaces everything Sutter does and more, Despres isn't needed with Pouliot/Dumoulin/Maatta/Harrington, the 1st is in a weak draft and Blueger isn't anything special.

Well, I guess I have to agree to disagree here. Because I believe our future would be brighter with the four assets we keep, especially Despres and our 2014 1st rounder, over a 30-year-old Kesler.

I agree with all of this. I just don't think Kesler is the right guy to sell out for. I don't want to go back to the 3 center model. Especially since we don't have any 3rd line wings to play him with. If we can bring in another 3rd line center and play Kesler at wing, I'd be less annoyed by the deal. At least then we are giving up major assets for a top 6 player.

I was thrilled when we traded Staal because I thought it meant we would finally get Sid and Geno the wings to put us over the top. It hasn't happened, and if we get Kesler to be 3C it likely never will.

If we really think about it, this whole thing is absurd. We don't have enough wingers to make Crosby and Malkin all that they can be, so let's bring in another center who won't be able to play with the wingers he needs to maximize output. Great plan!

Is Ricky Gervais running this Office?

this is just on TSN....

The Pittsburgh Penguins are reportedly ponying up in their efforts to lure Ryan Kesler out of Vancouver.

Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported a proposed deal between the Pens and Canucks that he credited to multiple sources.

“A proposed deal would send Kesler to the Penguins in exchange for Brandon Sutter, two 2014 draft picks — likely a first- and third-round — and the Canucks' choice of defensemen Simon Despres or Brian Dumoulin,†Rossi wrote on Saturday.

Rossi continued to say that it is possible the deal could involve another player going in either direction, but that Penguins' GM Ray Shero was only looking to acquire Kesler.

if this trade goes ahead im going to puke........

Me too, puke.

Exactly.

Last point, I wish we would stop calling Ryan Kesler 'elite'. Sidney Crosby is elite. Evgeni Malkin is elite. Ryan Kesler is very good.

Because we blew our load on the Kesler trade? What do we have left to trade without completely emptying the cupboard?

The same friggin' assets we've been talking about ad nauseum for the cheap rentals. Samuelsson, mid to late picks. If your team has Kesler, Sid, Malkin and Neal, you don't need all stars to complement them. Hemsky at half salary or Stempniak is fine by me.

I've posted multiple capgeek lineups that show we can make the room for another forward.
