You realize the Rangers will trade him if they can't sign him to a contract they like right?.. They traded Callahan for God sakes, and they were prepared to trade Girardi as well. Staal will not be leaving for nothing. He will either re sign or be traded.

If they do trade him, after losing Stralman for nothing, they need to trade him for a defenseman.

I believe Skjei will eventually be his long-term replacement. And is the kind of player I am advocating for.

But until that time, they would need a placeholder.

Also, you can't create that kind of hole in the middle of what would hopefully be a push for the playoffs. If they are committing to him that far in the season, unless they can upgrade him, there is no way to trade him at that point in time.

If they trade him, the time is now.

Callahan was traded for his replacement (and upgrade).

Not super enthused about it, but if we lose Poo, I could definitely see the Rangers signing Penner as a LW replacement who can bring some needed size into the lineup. Don't think it'll take more than the 2mil a year he made last year.

Another name I haven't seen mentioned is Mathieu Perreault. He put up 2 less points than Brass last season, playing only 69 games, with a cap hit just over 1mil. If the Rangers think about playing JT on the wing or 4th line next season, I think Perrault would be a good fit in AV's system. He's got good speed, helps us with some depth at the center position, and hopefully could be signed for somewhere just north of 2mil a season.

As for the 4th line, with the somewhat unexpectedly low 69mil cap, there's plenty of 4th liners we can sign around the 800,000-<1.5mil mark we're going to need to get this roster in order. Personally, I'm a big fan of D. Moore, but for a 33 year old 4th line center, I think anything above 1.5 and 2 years is unfortunately really pushing it.

Agreed. We're taking a step back. Hell, re-signing Stralman just makes us status-quo and we still have a gaping hole on the PP point.

If we lose Stalman, then the replacement should someone that can help on the PP.

I agree. Upgrade would be preferable.

Sather would give him the exact same treatment.

And Sather has. You should remember the agent, Kurt Overhardt. Kurt's other client was Dubinsky, and his demands for a larger, longer contract early on as well.

As much as I love the bridge contract for getting quality players for pennies, with many players putting up fantastic production at 24, it is a bit of a raw deal when you look at the deals UFAs will get tomorrow.

As fans, we are first in line to criticize players when overpaid, but little praise when someone like Zuccarello made 1.15 million last year.

Penner wouldn't be terrible. He definitely has offensive ability. Can he keep up speed wise though?

And if you think Stu Bickel is immobile you never seen Dale Purinton

One has nothing to do with the other.

Bickel has nothing to do with Staal not having full vision in both eyes. Nothing to do with Staal suffering at least one concussion in each of the last three seasons.

And has nothing to do with the fact he is going to be an unrestricted free agent on July 1, 2015, and will command 6 million annually.

Except Staal is a fairly mobile player. I know you avoided answering that, but he is.

I don't feel like searching through pages and pages of posts, but I agree with this. Look for low-risk players to fill some holes and can fit the system. Perreault is someone I'd look at.

What about Jaime McBain? Right handed defenseman who can put up some points. I don't know much about him as a player though.

Lol so I didn't feel like arguing I guess that means I'm a teenager? Yes!!! Now I can start up my hockey career!... but seriously I have my opinion you have yours. Theres a reason why Staal is still on the team and likely will be renewed while stralman is walking but that's just my opinion

The second half of this post is what i'm looking for. You don't need to lower youself to snarky comments. I belive you're intelligent enough and don't need it. It takes things off topic, and creates a mess, like everyone ganging up on seven.

Agree, everyone has their opinion.

I don't believe they will extend Staal. I believe a combination of John Moore and Brady Skjei will render Staal the way of the dinosaur.

But if they do, i fear he will become a wipping boy based on contract and depreciating qualities. Not a situation i like to see a player i am fond of, to find himself in.

Dispite my concerns, Marc Staal is one of my favorite players of the last two decades. I feel his time here is running out.

If Sather goes less mobile by bringing in Fayne or Boyle, Vigneault will hav to make adjustments to his system to compensate. I don't like that notion. If anything i want to see his sytem ramped up. I want more players with high-end skating. I want our speed to wear down opponents, and our skill to finish the job.

Except Staal is a fairly mobile player. I know you avoided answering that, but he is.

Mobile is which sense?

He used to be able to read plays quicker and pivot and get to those pucks quicker. His head injuries, more specifically his eye, have caused him to not be able to read plays as quickly and as a result not get to those pucks as quickly.

His mobility was always more small area oriented. He isn't as slow as some, no.

The kind of mobility i am talking about is play changing skating. Oppsition rushing the puck, rub them out, quickly gain control and quickly get it up ice.

I'm talking about speed.

The more of it, the harder it is for the opposition to handle. They'll resort to clogging the neutral zone. That can only aid them so long.

If the speed is there through the whole lineup, we can wear them out.

We won't be a big physical team. Facing reality. So intimidate them with speed. Add enough skill to finish opportunities. Especially on the power play. The real culprit to our losing the Cup. Score one extra PP goal per game, and we are celebrating a championship.
