Im leaning towards Staal and Stralman both being on the opening night roster - Staal without a new contract.

The offense will be a question mark, but thats what 2/3rds of the season and the trade deadline are for.

Agree.

Dispite how I feel about Staal not really fitting Vigneault's system, I agree. I'd much rather have that money tied up in our strength (goal and defense) than to cut ties with Stralman over what will end up being an extra few hundred K and a couple extra years.

Is it worth it to hurt the defense to marginally improve the offense?

Letting Stralman walk could be the worst move of the offseason assuming they do not sign or trade for anyone old and slow.

It would be the worst move of the last few seasons, IMO.

No, especially since the Rangers have been trying to improve the offense for several years to little or no avail.

Now we are going to **** with the backbone of the team in more questionable attempts to improve the offense? No thanks.

Yes, and unfortunately #2 is starting to look like it will cause #1 regardless.

Boyle: Highly likely to be gone.
Pouliot: Pretty likely.
Stralman: Likely.
Staal: Possibly traded but more likely here until at least March.
Moore: Likely to be back.

1.5/5 is good, right?... :sarcasm:

The problem is you have 40 posters each posting 5 different roster scenarios which involve a lot of moves altogether. But in reality, that is what the Rangers staff is sitting in a room and doing now, and have been for the past couple weeks and even before. They're going through all the available players, going through different scenarios, different guys have different views, and they're trying to nail down their primary, secondary and tertiary targets and developing a plan of attack. And if their primary target doesn't happen, they go down list, put in plan B, C, D, and so on. And overpaying Poo, Boyle, Stralman, if that's what needs to be done, may be in the cards if they first, can't get them for less and second, can't replace them. Well, hopefully they're working hard figuring it out. Guess I should have said this is what they should be doing. And we will all complain at the final result, not really knowing all the details and realities that they just couldn't get everyone.

I don't think so, but a decision still needs to be made on Staal at some point and I think now is the best time to make it. If we aren't trading him now, then lock him up now. I don't want another situation like we had with Girardi and Cally this year.

I could see NYR giving in with Stralman and paying him but not Boyle or Pouliott.

Dan Boyle will make a ton too so if that's the case they may just sign Anton. They need a Dman regardless unless they go risky with McIlrath and moving up Klein

Agree.

Plus, we have a couple of talented kids that can fill the wing positions. Anthony Duclair has ridiculous speed, maybe faster than Hagelin and Kreider, and great hands. J.T. Miller can handle playing the wing.

Any replacement on D is a year away at-least. Brady Skjei will be really good, but he should get a year in Hartford first and they haven't signed him to an ELC yet.

Center is the main issue upfront, but we can go cheaper than Stastny and be effective (Grabovski) or trade for a younger guy with break-out potential.

Stralman has to be signed.

Betting on McI I feel would be a horrible mistake

pretty confident the guy can handle 3rd pair minutes. More than that not sure.

Klein doesnt stink, he's very steady and while Stralman is a good puck mover Klein wont kill the Rangers most nights.

Reality is teams have to pay for UFAs so allocate properly. Stralman is the number one Free Agent for NY and if he goes then Boyle is a descent replacement for 2 yrs. People need to chill on his age he would help the PP huge

Replacing Stralman with McIlrath has disaster written all over it.

Other places and players need to pay and keep before strahlman. We can afford to miss his 1g 12 a and no physical presence to keep anybody off hank in front of goal. Klein is adequate and get big mac up here and start the indoctrination already.

Your evaluation of Stralman is a bad as your attempt to spell his last name.

I get sad when I read stuff like this. The notion that points and hitting are the only things that make a good defenseman. :shakehead

But they wouldn't be replacing Stralman with McIlrath. They would be replacing Stralman with Klein.

Exactly. I believe the Rangers are okay with 1 spot being open on defense. Allen and McIlrath are very close, if not already ready for the NHL at the beginning of next year. Both are having healthy off-seasons of full training and know what they need to improve upon.

I would love to bring back Stralman. He has been a very solid player for this team and I believe it would allow for them to use a defenseman as a piece to acquire help elsewhere.

However, I am also quietly confident in Oscar Lindberg being able to hold down a 3/4c spot next season with PKing duties. He has a very good understanding of the game and has had a full season on NA ice.

Decisions, decisions.

IMO, step 1 is to get Stralman to re-sign. 6 years @ 4.5? Okay.

Step 2 is to find out who will pay the most for Staal. Winnepeg? Edmonton? Carolina? SJ? Find a very good, young power forward. LW or center. We'll assume for this that it is Evander Kane.

I think having Klein lets the set a number on Stralman and stick to that number.

In my mind, the Stralman/Klein switch is a slight downgrade, but something the Rangers can deal with.

Replacing Klein's 3rd pairing minutes with McIlrath is a disaster zone.

Eh, how many times has something like this happened and to how many teams. OMGZ IF XXXXXX LEAVES WE ARE SCREWED1!11

That's how young players come into the league. Bring them along slowly, maybe 10-12 minutes a night and slowly increase their minutes depending on the game/situation.

I think having Klein lets the set a number on Stralman and stick to that number.

I agree, I just feel that in order to have the redundancy they need to make a trade, he has to brought back. They need either Stralman or Staal. With Stralman back, they can move Staal. Without Stralman back, they have to give Staal pretty much whatever he wants.

You're evaluation of Stralman is a bad as your attempt to spell his last name.

I agree...that's not a great well to spell his name. I'm not a huge fan of Stralman, relatively speaking, but I still think he's quite good, and perhaps it's just the pairing and chemistry that works well, but I've been more in the camp of trying to keep Staal over Stralman, although admittedly given where this team is in contracts it's handed out, I'm not sure they can afford Staal (although MSL comes off next season and perhaps someone cheaper waiting in the wings emerges next season, but that's a tough call).

Too many combinations of possibilities out there for me to pinpoint one I'd like. This team can survive without any one player not named Lundqvist, provided that player is adequately replaced somehow So I won't crucify Sather for not signing Stralman, or not trading Staal, or signing Stralman and trading Staal based on that one occurrence; I'll look at the entire plan, which means we may go through a couple lumps here before we see the team that begins the season.

I want Stralman back, but do we keep building on defense and Hank and hope to finally one day the offense is good enough to win the cup? We've done that 2 years now and neither year it was good enough (2012 ECF run, 2014 SCF run).

and I know I keep going back to this... but 20M tied up in a blueline that is inept offensively outside of Ryan Mcdonagh is a bad bad idea I dont care how good it is defensively.

Id rather take my chances with consistent late playoff runs than run the risk of completely ****ing up the roster, which you seem fine with, as long as it creates the illusion of more offense on paper.

I kind of agree with this. Having so much money tied up in our defense, is not bad but only when you have some offense coming with it as well. We need to work on our offense. I have seen too many games in recent years where we were outscored and were just unable to crack the opposition's defense.

Yes. The Rangers should create more space to throw money at forwards, because thats worked so well for them.
