Come on lets not be silly now. Scott Gomez got us the guy who is primed to be our next captain, a solid 3rd liner (Chris Higgins) and a solid B-level prospect that could have actually been a bottom pairing defender for us had he gotten a cup of coffee.

Nash would get us a lot in return.

Bob Gainey making one of the worst trades in the history of professional sports isn't something I'd assume will happen again.

What do you guys think of this?

Mainly trying to re-sign our players, minus Boyle and Stralman, but adding Grabovski. Plus, bringing up our younger guys to fill the gaps. Also with a little bit of wiggle room in the cap.

I wouldn't mind trading Staal+Miller for Thornton or ROR.
We really need a #1C imo.

Here's the best plausible roster I could come up with based on that trade.
I'd hate to see Boyle go and the defense takes a bit of a hit but it was really hard to stay under the cap! :p:

Sorry, IMO both very bad deals.
remember, Miller is the speed link for Kreider, MSL

ROR is not cheap, will not be cheap, and will force the price up on Stepan

I would love to do

Staal, Girardi + Pouilot for ROR + Siemens
then flip
ROR + Stepan
for
Spezza + Zibby

No. If we get ROR, we keep him. You want to give up ROR for Spezza? NO!

I wouuldn't mind giving Staal, Miller and a prospect/pick for ROR and a D-man (Elliott for instance) and buff up our offense.

I know Miller is a very talented center, but we are not in the position to have him develop in 3 to 4 years. We have MSL for 1 more year and hopefully 2 more but that's it. We need to flip some talents for NHL-ready players.

This made me nauseous

It doesn't really matter what we think when the President/GM of the team is in "win now mode". He's old, had surgery to treat prostate cancer last March and his team just made the Stanley Cup finals. He will be doing everything he possibly can to ensure that the Rangers make it back to the finals next season.

IT DOES MATTER!!

call him out on it.
You gamble like he did, you keep losing, you fall more and more behind.
He has some nice signings and our mid picks look really good, but still....

Enough people call him out, he will be forced to at least be confronted and explain himself.

We're the fans, it's our team, why should we bend buckle and break to ownership?
Screw that BS
We love the team, love is given, respect is earned.
We will always love NYR, but that doesn't mean we support mgmt.
Mgmt must earn our respect, every day, going forward, no resting on laurels.

I really don't like any of the options posted...the best case scenario would be getting ROR because he is another good 2 way center who plays a game bigger than he is but I don't like the cap position it puts us in.

According to Blues fans Roy is a shell of himself. Grabovski isn't going to be cheap. Legwand isn't great at any one thing and not flashy enough for most people on this board...He could be a good stopgap center for a couple years

ROR is not best scenario unless we
a) get him dirt cheap or at least reduced (Stall + Girardi + Poo)
AND
b) flip him + Stepan, basically for Spezza + Zibby.

What is this obsession with Spezza? I prefer a 23-year old player 60+ point season over a 31-year old with the same numbers.

Darren Dreger was on the NHL Network last night. He said Dan Boyle wants a 2 year contract. Dreger believes Boyle can get $5M per for those two years. Paul Stastny wants $6.5M-$7M per. Stastny wants to stay with the Avs. Earlier this week there was a report concerning Andrei Markov wanting 3 years and $6M per. Anton Stralman will get offers in the $4M-$5M range. Does he stay with the Rangers for $4M or bolt for more money? There is a comfort zone for Stralman with the Rangers. He discussed 4 teams in 7 years.

Doug MacLean said Stralman benefited from playing with Staal.

Someone on twitter put up a chart which says the opposite

https://twitter.com/TravisHeHateMe/status/479328672520757248

I like MacLean because he makes fun of Kypreos but is really out to lunch on many issues

Stall will be looking for $6M in his next contract. I really like Staal. Home grown guy. Is he really worth what he will get? 2 concussions. The eye injury. Staal finished the year healthy. Last season of his contract. Now would be the time to trade him. Business.

FWIW, IMO
I expect the best we can do w/Stralman to be:
resign, 3.8, maybe 3.6 years, 5 year deal w/Rangers [and that's pushing it]
+ a clause says if he is traded, he gets 1mil per season more
no limits on trades, but hand shake understanding there is a courtesy if we have to move him, whether for need or cap space, we will attempt, all things equal, to accommodate his preference.

Way too much to give up on our end for ROR+. And why would you deal a young ROR for an older Spezza?

If Staal is a stud defensemen, then you need to replace him with someone who is better than a bottom-pairing option. Moore isn't that guy. Allen isn't that guy. I keep seeing that Staal is going to be too expensive, and then people start throwing money at UFA's to replace him.

Not so fast.
I've been generally opposed to trading Staal, preferring to move Girardi.
For cap, we may need to do both.

I could live with the heady Allen as #2 LD for the time being.
Remember, even if it is not a replacement LD or it is not a D, if we are getting a profit we should move people. No sacred cows.

trade Stepan (23 years old) to get ROR (22 years old), just to trade him to Ottawa for 30 year old 7M cap hit UFA Spezza?!!!

AND we give up Girardi AND Staal in doing so?

WUT?

This team seriously needs to dump Nash. Compliance buyout if necessary. Move Kreider for Spezza. Don't take the bait on Thornton unless we're talking Shawn to play 4th line. Forget the ROR talk because it's not realistic. Extend Staal before he runs to his brothers. Sign Fayne from the Debbie's. Would be Sathers best offseason in recent memory.

Pouliot Spezza Zucc (could be one of the best top lines in hockey)
Brassard Stepan JT
Hags Richards St Louis
Dorsett Boyle Thornton

McDonagh Girardi
Staal Fayne
Klein Moore

King

Hell no.

Not a fan of Grabovski.

Yea, hell no.

Instead, let's do what you said and trade

Staal, Girardi (who has a NMC), Pouliot for ROR and Siemens

and then flip ROR and Stepan for Spezza and Zibanejad.

That's fantasy, dude. I like the creativity, but this is just too much.

It's like saying let's trade Lundqvist and Staal for Malkin and Despres and then trade Malkin and Stepan for Quick and Carter.

Trying 1 more:

Re-sign:
Kreider
Zuccarello
Brassard
J. Moore
D. Moore
Pouliot
Diaz
Carcillo

Trade:
Staal+Miller to Colorado for O'Reilly and Elliott

Buy-out:
Richards

and makes us a much worse team...

i know this isnt popular with most ranger fans, but this is what i would do in the offseason

Kreider/skjei/2nd for Thornton
if sharks say no

Sign David Legwand on 1 year deal
try to sign Pouliot, if not go after
Setoguchi, steve downie, or even Heatley{yes not kidding]
resign Stralman

That defense would get crapped on. 2nd pair is awful. Klein is a decent 4 but Elliot with him? Yikes. If either of our top pairing gets hurt, were toast. And for the 100th time, that package isn't good enough to get ROR much less add Siemens to it. Makes absolutely no sense for the Avs.
