Both Gaborik and Nash IMO would function best as complementary scorers then as the main guys--like Gaborik is doing playing on Kopitar's wing in LA right now. When Gaborik's your biggest threat you're pretty much heading for the 2nd round and then out. The Rangers have got to where they are with Nash somehow or other because they were able to mitigate his lack of goals by balanced scoring over 4 lines and their dependency on a very good defense and an elite goalie.
Nash and Gaborik are not elite players in my terms. They don't rank with the top 15-20 forwards in the league. They need more help to do what they do best than those that are truly elite. They are a rung below but in the right circumstances like Gaborik is in now--they can be a real force. Which is to say that if Gaborik were here and Nash was in LA it wouldn't surprise me at all if Nash had 13 goals playing with Kopitar and Gaborik had 3 like Nash has so far. If the Rangers had a legit 1st line center Nash would IMO be much more of a factor.
Another reason why it makes sense to improve on center depth than it does to try and ship Nash out while his value is in the toilet.
