Yup cause who in their right mind would ever want someone who scores 15 more points a season and has a +/- rating of 36 points higher???!???!?

15 points more this season. Niskanen is 27 and has scored over 40 points exactly once in his career. Also, that production just happened to come when he was spoon-fed PP time with one of the most potent offenses in the NHL. If you want to risk > $5M per year for 6 or 7 years on this being a breakout season, that's your prerogative.

Gardiner already has two 30 point seasons under his belt before the age of 24. He's cost controlled. He also plays the left side, which makes him a more viable partner for Stralman.

What if we went nuts for centers and traded Stepan + Girardi + Nash for Eric Staal + Jordan Staal and a +? The cap difference would be fairly close and it would give us size down the middle. I admit, it's extreme--and I love G--but this would give us a bit more size and some strength where we're lacking it. It does make our RW look rather weak, though. Calculated risk? We're bringing in 2 cup winners on 2 different teams.

It would give us a slot to go after a PMD of some sort. Girardi has been great, but I've also seen some dissent regarding his spot in the system.

Kreider - E. Staal - MSL
Hagelin - J. Staal - Miller/Fast
Pouliot - Brass - Zuccs
Boyle - Moore - Dorsett

McD - Stralman
Staal - Niskanen
Moore - Klein

Assuming a $69,000,000 cap, it'd be a tight fit, but we'd make it. Could even move Dorsett for some extra padding and put in a cheaper option in Carcillo or someone else.

I like Eric Staal, but hes a notorious underachiever.

Id rather have Kesler than Staal.

Regardless of how they have played in the last month, Staal would be a greater loss than Stralman because Klein is in much better condition to take over a top 4 role than John Moore is.

I think we've shown mathematically that this team can keep everyone, including Stralman, if we just buy out Richards and replace him with Miller/Lindberg at center.

It isn't ideal, but I'd prefer that than blowing up the whole roster to try to get another pivot in.

I'm fine with that too. I just hope they look into trading Staal but only if they get good value in return, otherwise roll with what they have.

lol having a defenseman on his offside has become so taboo on here. That alone would not stop be from choosing Stralman over Staal.

They're going to command similar salaries also, which would make it that much more of a nightmare.

If we sign Niskanen and let Stralsy or Staal walk, I will lose all faith in the management here.

Niskanen had a pretty good year IMO, better than Staal. I don't see why making an upgrade on defense will make one lose faith in management.

I'd rather figure out who to pair with Stralman than just let Stralman go.

So would I. Still think John Moore could potentially grow into a second pairing role, although, hopefully, he won't have to with Skjei on the way. Can't discount Graves' development, either. He seems pretty similar to Staal, actually.

What are the chances he repeats that year, though? He had that year playing on one of the best regular season teams in the league and in a contract year. There's a pretty decent chance he'll relegate back to his bottom pairing status.

Niskanen had the 5th most ES points amongst defenders in the NHL. Only him and Maata were over 50% Corsi%. Pens defense is with the likes of the Oilers, Leafs without him last year.

I think signing Niskanen would be a wise move, would be even better if they let Girardi walk and replaced him with Niskanen.

Well it wouldn't be if the defense we had were capable of playing on their off side, but they haven't been. Only McD.

We don't know if McDonagh would be able to play on the right side with the same effectiveness on North America ice. The only time we've seen him play the right side is during the Olympics--in Sochi the games were played on the larger ice surface, where the angles are completely different. It is much easier to get away with small mistakes on the larger ice surface.

Given the speed the NHL game is played today, I don't think it's a good idea to expect players to play a different position unless they do it on a regular basis.
