We all know the Rangers have very good defensive depth and goaltending. They are really a #2/3 center tweener and a second line LW away from having a really deep team again. Problem is the lack of cap space. May be Miller could be that center they need. One less hole to fill.

Hope both players didnt want to play here because to not make those offers to them is really confusing.

I just don't understand it. 1 million cap hit. 1 million cap hit. 1 million cap hit. What are they doing?

Pains me to say, but I don't think Sather sucks. He's done an average to above average job since the lockout. We could certainly use better, but there have been far worse than him come and go since '05. Also hard to completely ignore what he did before the lockout considering how awful it was, but starting in the 03-04 season he got this team on track a bit. Throw in some luck by being handed a future HHoF goalie, and boom. Playoff appearances, SCF and ECF appearances will follow. In a nutshell? We could be far worse off than we are.

On the other hand, I completely agree that Gorton gets overrated around here. It's hard to say what he specifically does in the FO since none of us are there, but if the Rangers make a good move it's usually followed by "Wow, Gorton is really making his mark in the Rangers FO". Oh well. Such is life.

Definitely true. As we all know, the cap coming in at $69m was a real hamper to this team's off-season.

Still think that not being able to address a goal scoring LW'er and PPQB year after year is pretty bad. I do not have faith in D. Boyle's ability to be that PPQB at 38 years old.

I also believe that you cannot maintain long term success when you continously give away 1st round picks. It is a recipe for shortening the competitive window. Any comparisson to the Wings is (imo) tossed out. We don't have a Lidstrom, Yzerman, Fedorov followed by a Datsyuk, Zetterberg or even a Franzen.

I mean its not even a cap issue when it comes to 1 million. You have to ice 12 forwards. Any prospect that fills that role will make around 1 million. Miller to replace Pouliot. Ribiero or Roy could've replaced Richards.

I just don't understand.

Roy is tiny and coming off of two pretty bad seasons. Riberio has a whole host of issues. Neither of those players were going to light our team on fire.

I just think is foolish to hand spots to prospects in camp. Sign the depth. They can always be moved if a prospect shows he is ready.

The way the third line is looking right now, Hagelin is the only proven player at that level. No way we deal him right now.

To be fair, Viper isn't suggesting trading him without a top-9 player coming back.

True. Brouwer plays substantial minutes on both the PP and PK for Washington, while Hagelin isn't really a good PP option.

He's also bigger and has a perpetually high shooting percentage.

But I think there's something to be said for continuity in a lineup, and Brouwer is a UFA in two seasons. All things considered it isn't a "Hell no" type deal for me, but with the way Hagelin played for us in the postseason I'm much more comfortable with bringing him back.

It is a cap issue, and it isn't. Hate those answers! What we do not know is what Sather is planning. He may have other ideas and neither Ribiero or Roy fit into those plans. Further, seemingly tons of teams passed on both, and if they are capable of filling the hole left by Richards (which is 50 points and the centerman to a perennial 30 goal scorer), then many teams, especially those with cap space in case they don't work out, would jump at the opportunity to trump $1MM per and go with $1.25MM per, and it would have been done last week. If Sather got it wrong, he'll be sitting $1MM in cap space, which he doesn't have. Hate giving Sather the benefit of the doubt, but here I will.

This is pretty much what a lot of posters here said about Pouliot last off season.

I didn't know how to bold the last sentence, sorry.

Is it really that confusing?

They're cheap, okay, but if they don't add anything to the team it's a waste of a roster spot. I wouldn't want either of them for 0 million.

I'd happily take Roy at that no-risk contract. But what's done is done.

It seems to me that Sather wants to see Miller develop, and I can't blame him. I see a lot of potential in the kid.
