I was looking at the free agent list for next season. Not that many really good players available.

http://capgeek.com/free-agents/?year_id=2015&team_id=-1&position_id=-1&fa_type_id=2

The really good player like Krejci will be off the market by next July. Boston will keep him. Bobby Ryan is going to the Flyers. Bryan Murray made a horrible trade for Ryan. The team stinks. Ryan had two years left on his contract. American kid. He isn't staying in Ottawa. The Canadian guys can't wait to leave Ottawa. Ryan is an OK player. He is overrated. His salary is $5.625M. What will Newport want for him? The Flyers will pay him.

The July 2014 free agent class was better than the 2015 group. This class wasn't very good.

The D are horrible. Staal is the best potential D. Ehrhoff is free again. Mike Green. Damaged goods. Jeff Petry will get decent money based on his age-27 and he is right handed. A bunch of old guys rounds out the group.

The goalies stink too. Fleury stinks. Ben Bishop has the chance to get good bucks if he has a really good year.

The Rangers can't look to the free agent for help. Even if they had the space, not that many options.

Re-sign your own players.

Look at each member of that line's point totals since 2010-11: Pouliot (30, 32, 20, 36) and Brassard (47, 41, 29, 45) did what they always do. Their output has been basically unchanged regardless of their situation. The big difference is that Zuccarello had a huge breakout year, which I attribute more to his increased playing time and maturation than any other factor.

I believe in group dynamics when they deliver actual tangible benefits. If Brassard is actually making his teammates better then it should show up in his play somewhere or in his teammates' play. It's not because he doesn't. His teammates don't score more when playing with him. His teammates don't control the puck more when playing with him. He's essentially a neutral factor at even strength.

You're giving Brassard way too much credit. Like I said above, if Pouliot was actually benefiting from Brassard, then it would've shown up somewhere. His scoring and possession numbers basically remained exactly the same as his career rates.

Couldn't the same be said for Pouliot? If his possession numbers were actually making his teammates better wouldn't it show up somewhere in his production numbers?

I mean if Brassard is neutral, and Zucc "broke out" how does Pouliot put up essentially the same, actually a little worse production 5 on 5 per min numbers?

Don't strain yourself Slats:(

Slats on the golf course in Banff. Yesterday.

Slats playing golf with the Kings mascot. No BS. True story.

I'm sure its a fun gimmick but for Sather to be golfing when he has 3 important RFA contracts to handle a week away from arbitration, just feels like he's not taking the whole thing seriously

It's not a big deal, it's never a big deal, yet every year people make it out to be a big deal.

Come on, buttering up the Kings mascot on the golf course to entice him to sign with the Rangers when he becomes a free agent is definitely a big deal. Wonder is any tampering charges will be levied :sarcasm:

Do people still think Slats is the one working on the RFAs?

That's Gorton.

Gorton handles all the contracts, but even if Sather was doing the negotiations, what exactly should he be doing? All of the players/agents know what the Rangers are offering, and the Rangers aren't going to budge on those numbers until they have to. If the player and/or agent wants to talk, they can call him. Cell phones still work on golf courses.

There's no reason that Slats, Gorton or any of the Rangers' management actually needs to be sitting in the office waiting for a call.

From what I understood, it was either Detroit or retire for him, right?

Plus, can he play LW?

Either way, probably a moot discussion, but an interesting thought....
Yes, Alfredsson has made it clear it's Detroit if anything. He has some ongoing back issues.

A long time ago in Ottawa, their three best forwards were Daniel Alfredsson, Marian Hossa and Martin Havlat. They didn't feel comforable playing any of them anywhere but RW, however, so most of the time they had some extraordinary RW depth.
