I at least know a defenseman on the top pair of an AHL team at the age of 22 is not "heading towards bust status".

Knowledge is power.

I've defended McIlrath before. You left out that I acknowledged that defensive first defensemen take longer to develop. Through no fault of his own though he is behind in his development and the Rangers may not have time to wait for him, especially if Miller busts.

You've missed my point that he is a tradable asset. The Rangers have very few of these. If the Rangers need an offensive upgrade I guarantee his name gets floated. Depth chart wise, he won't be a top 4 defenseman for at least the next two years while Boyle is here. Klein is a necessity because of his ability, consistency and contract and Girardi is going no where. So do you wait 2 years for McIlrath to be ready if the Rangers are offensively floundering? That would be horrendous asset management.

I hope McIlrath plays awesome at the AHL and forces his way into the lineup ASAP, but if he doesn't make the leap, or fails with the addition responsibility, then you have a player who yes, is on his way to being a bust, at least in terms of perception. If he outplays Klein that is great for the Rangers, but if not McIlrath has more trade value than Klein. I don't think the Rangers have time to wait for McIlrath if the offense sputters.

if the Rangers were to sign Hayes, would that put us at 50 contracts?

Read the 1st post in the thread
We are at 47 contracts right now and John Moore is still unsigned putting us at 48.
This does not include Graves or Duclair.
There is however some uncertainty regarding if Anthony Duclairs contract will be allowed to slide or not this year. Different view have been posted in the Bourque signing thread so that kind of contradicts what some beat writers have said that his contract will be able to slide.
So we are at 48 or 49 SPCs as of now, depending on Duclairs status and assuming John Moore signs

Would be nice to get some clarification on the Duclair contract. I wonder if capgeek is just basing the signing date from when the Rangers released the press release which was January 2nd.

RangerBoy made a good point in the Bourque thread, why would the Rangers not have him sign in December to get the two year slide? Or just wait until his season was over, and have him sign his ELC starting this coming season.

It made no sense to sign him January 2nd, and waste his slide year.

The Rangers usually lag in announcing the signings of their entry level contracts and the other lower level contracts. The Rangers signed Duclair on January 2? Right after January 1? The Rangers rushed to sign Duclair on January 2 to have the contract count in 14-15 when they could have waited until March to sign the player or signed the player before the calendar turned to 2014. The signing was announced on January 2. The Rangers still haven't announced the Kristo signing. He signed his qualifying offer on July 11. His agent tweeted that information. Capgeek doesn't have Kristo as a signed player. NHLPA.com has Kristo signing his qualifying offer. Its listed on the Rangers page.

Yeah I'd say McI probably has a better breakout pass than, say, Girardi or Klein, to be perfectly frank. That's an underrated part of his game. He's got a surprisingly good first pass

I don't know about that, but no matter what, it must be mentioned that the conditions you are expected to make those passes under in the NHL are much tougher than in the AHL. Like the pressure that is put on the puck in the NHL is much higher -- when pressure is put on the ice. When pressure is not put on the ice, he will be forced to carry the puck up ice against a D that traps really well.

So McI heading into corners fetching pucks, or handling breakouts, will not be an upgrade over Girardi doing the same. Not even remotely. McI could get there, sure, but the kid is a rookie and would have ups and downs for a while.

the Dale Purinton days are gone. The Rangers do not need a defenseman to skate for 6-8 minutes per night because his only attribute is fighting. I don't mind fighting. I love physical hockey. But if the kid isn't up to the NHL challenge, aside from being an NHL-level pugilist, he doesn't belong with the NHL club.

McI is far from a Purinton II, but OTOH the game is diffrent now too...

So many college players are playing in the NHL. One third of the league is made up of college players which includes Canadian and some European kids like Hagelin. The Swedish WJC coach played college hockey at a school in Minnesota. Gord Miller of TN said he sounded like he was from Minnesota. He developed the Minnesota accent.

How much do you think he's worth in a trade? I'd rather just keep him and see how he pans out.

I also don't see what Dan Boyle has to do with McIlrath "being ready".

And how does McIlrath have more trade value than Klein?

Good question. Can the Rangers sell him as a top 10 pick with high upside at this point? Probably not.

Is there factual evidence that defensive dmen take longer to develop, or is it something that everyone has bandwagon'd on?

It probably has to do I with them filling out their bodies and all.

It has quite a bit to do with filling out their bodies and the fact that every mistake is magnified

Additionally the more experience you have going against a player, the more you know their moves & tendencies. Being a solid defensive dman requires an ability to read the play as it moves at you which tends to improve as players get used to the speed of a given level.

I'd be completely shocked if Hayes doesn't go to Calgary. What a story that would be to reunite with his complete college line. How many times does that ever happen?

On the contrary....

(The below is based solely off the fact of the presumption that Hayes is not signing in CHI because there is too much of a barrier to breaking the NHL roster)

Is there something to be said about a kid who refuses to sign with the team that drafted him because he doesn't feel he has a real shot at the NHL this year? Is there a maturity issue there? I mean... Isn't the point of competition to battle against the best? I get that it's his call and he can choose to sign or not sign, but, for that reason? Seems like a bit of a red flag to me.

I mean, you can go to Chicago, battle it out, possibly earn a spot on a top team in the western conference or, you can take the easy way out and sign with a team like Calgary, have a great shot at making the team since their RW depth is laughable, but not be in a good position to win. Is Calgary on the up? Sure. Will Hayes help that? You betcha, Sally Baby. But... I mean. You have a chance to play in and/or develop within the BLACKHAWKS organization. A perennial WCF or further team. And you won't just because you're afraid you won't hack it this year? Because there is a logjam?

Kid, if you're good enough, they will make the room for you.

Hell, he'd be the fourth, maybe even fifth best RWer on the Rangers today. Why sign here, then? Not like we're signing you to give you fourth line minutes.

Calgary or Florida. He'll get his shot at the NHL there and have the comfort of his teammates who ripped up the NCAA with him, or the pleasure of playing with his brother.

Just strikes me as... a lack of drive for lack of a better term.

If I was Hayes and was in this position, I would do the same thing. It's a business. You go where you think you will be paid the most and have the best opportunity to grow and prove your skills.

Yeah, that's true. I never really took $$ into account and I should have. I suppose he'll certainly have an easier time hitting bonuses if he actually makes the NHL

Doubt we wind up with him, but signing Hayes would throw my roster projections for a loop. Stempniak would probably wind up on the 4th line if he makes the team. Perhaps taking a potential roster spot away from Bourque, a spot in the line-up away from Lombardi as well. Glass is going to play, unfortunately.

That and he will be able to get a NHL contract for himself afterwards easier or he will get a larger contract in Europe somewhere after being able to market himself as a NHL player, etc.
