Hard to pass up Stempniak at $900k. He's a versatile forward who can kill penalties and adds a needed right-handed shot. However, this team has definitely gotten smaller this summer. That's a little bit worrisome, but we'll see how the roster shakes out.

Miller might not be "big" but he plays big he will get a shot.. and we still have Nash and Kreider.. just need to spread the size out. the little that we have.

Nash doesn't really use his size unless he has the puck which is great when he does have it and he's bulling his way towards the net, but with his body-type and strength, he could certainly do more.

Hey, if we swing a trade for Bjugstad from Florida, our average height will go up by an a full inch or two! (He's a 6'6" center with tons of upside)

From what I remember, Nash and Brassard didn't really work well together in CBJ. Times change I'm sure, but who knows. Would rather keep Nash comfortable than Kreider.

Kreider is also a possession and points/60 goals/60 monster; like Pouliot.

True. I'd be fine either way (Kreider with Brassard and Zucc or Nash with Brassard and Zucc). I'm really just tired of seeing Miller centering one of our top scoring wingers. It's not going to happen (at least not to start the season). Miller hasn't even earned a roster spot yet. Let's temper our expectations a bit (not referring to you specifically).

Even with shoring up the roster depth, I still think we are likely to see a broader ice time split this year. Just going by the centers, last year at ES, Richards was getting 15 minutes, Stepan 14 and Brassard 13. This year, I somewhat expect Stepan with a big increase to 16 minutes, Brassard a modest increase to 14, and Miller/Lindberg/Lombardi with 12.

My roster prediction:

Kreider-Stepan-St Louis
Nash-Brassard-Zuccarello
Hagelin-Miller-Stempniak
Glass-Moore-Lombardi

Of course, that's if healthy. We all know injuries will happen.

I certainly hope not. I think I am the Miller hater on these boards

I think Mueller is going to outplay Miller in camp. I'm hoping Lombardi will be good enough to handle 3C duties, but would rather have him on line four (because that means we have the depth to do so).

My ultimate thought is the Rangers will make a trade. Miller + to sure up the 3C spot. I will continue to say that I have no idea who they may be targeting for that, but I do think it will happen. Not until arbitration is over and they have Brassard, Kreider, and Zuccs on the books and can take a look at the cap.

And, now that we have our right-handed shot on the third line, it opens up plenty of other trade options to speculate since lefty centers are back in the mix :D

With the Stempniak and Lombardi signings, I am feeling better about the team and offseason.

Let's face it, we had the storm of RFAs and UFAs with not a lot of cap space.. But I'll say sather has done a pretty good job locking up the open slots.

Right on.

This is exactly what the lines will be for opening night, barring a trade. Everyone in their right spot. Nobody playing above their heads.

that 3rd line needs a better playmaking center unless miller will be able to provide that

Yes, Florida would move Bjugstad because....

Because they'd want to trade from a position of strength to acquire whatever they're trading for.

The Florida Panthers have

Bjugstad
Huberdeau
Barkov
Bolland
Fleischmann

all potential top-6 centers.

Even Derek MacKenzie and Brandon Pirri are natural centers.

Do you not understand this?

They could absolutely afford to, and would be smart to trade from a position of strength (center) to address needs at other positions. A deal that nets them a top-4 defenseman or a scoring winger (even a high-end prospect) is precisely the kind of trade they would be looking for.

I anxiously await your snide reply.

The idea is to give Miller a chance to show what he can do, assuming he plays well enough to earn the spot in camp.

But, not every line needs a pure playmaker. It's the THIRD line. They'll be asked to play smart, two-way hockey and provide secondary scoring. We know Hagelin and Stempniak are very effective in that role. Now it's Miller's (or Lindberg's or Lombardi's) chance to prove he can be relied on in that role.

Your talent sets your floor. Your character sets your ceiling.

Go on the trade board, make a Bjugstad to NYR thread and see how the Panthers fans, or at the least the general consensus, feel about it.

It's very rare with hockey trades in this league and so forth.

But I wouldn't listen to Florida fans. Yes it's perfectly possible that FLA wouldn't trade Bjugstad, because very few teams trade any players. But Bjugstad just hasn't been very good for them. He has been good in some areas, but he often looks out of place in the NHL on a subpar team that struggles to get up ice.

I made a joke about trading Hagelin and Miller for Bjugstad and Jimmy Hayes the other day. It was a joke, but I don't think necessarily that value wise there is anything wrong with Hags for Bjugstad.

We need size, it will probably be evident during the season. If it is I could see us trying to make a hockey trade like that to get some more size...
