While I would LOVE Byfuglien, as I'm sure a bunch of others would here, that's gonna be a big contract. I don't think we can afford to do that and take on ANOTHER massive contract while everyone thinks we have too many already.

This some other team is going to have Spurgeons upside while the wild will have a declining player.

Russo was on Souhan's podcast today. Always a good listen.
Just some of Russo's own thoughts include Granlund becoming a legit number one center with his lack of size and ability to stay healthy. Russo mentioned the Wild should maybe trade him to get someone bigger in return.
He has a feeling Spurgeon might be traded before his current contract is up (Spurgeon the only top 4 Dman who isn't locked in long term), assuming Dumba is good enough to take a top 4 spot.
He expects the Wild to go hard after Byfuglien in free agency next year to add some much needed toughness.

I disagree unless you can find somebody as creative are better then him. I mean is Calgary going to trade Gaudreau? I know other players his size in the west but that his the only name I can come up with right know.

Haven't played in a few days. Playoffs percentage up to 32% from 27%. Can't complain!

Dustin Byfuglien isn't a free agent until 2016,so is he saying after next season?

Yeah, Spurgeon is just starting to get to the next level. He and Scandella are very dangerous in 5v5. We instead need Folin and Dumba in the weight room.

As for trading Granlund for a upgrade, that is easier said than done. Pretty sure 2nd line centers are traded for legit franchise center like never. We have a better chance that Coyle becomes a PPG point center.

I think we should keep Granlund... but look at upgrading from Koivu if we can. He's not the player he used to be. If we could get someone there, then Granlund won't HAVE to be relied upon as the top center.

Being that he is the most creative offensive player we have, I'd rather keep him if we can.

Chuck fletcher doesn't seem happy about Malkin getting Haula in the jaw. He thinks it was cheapshot.

I would gladly package Granlund and Spurgeon if it meant getting back a center that is better and younger than Koivu.

the combination of Koivu's play/age/contract make trading him seem like a dumb idea.

When did this happen? What is being referenced here? Did I miss something over the break?

I feel like the forums hiccuped and this is actually a really old post. :(

He was on kfan today an they asked him about Haula and his play. Then he talked about Malkin getting Haula in the jaw and the John Moore hit.

Ah ha. That makes sense now. I knew the event sounded familiar, but it seemed too long ago to be in proper context.

Thanks.

I wonder if that hit to Haula had a long term effect. I wouldn't have perceived him to be a guy who would party all summer and neglect training when he had just earned his way onto an NHL line up the previous spring. I had only heard positives about his character before.

You're not going to get any meaningful upgrade from Koivu without throwing in other assets that would hurt a lot to lose.

Obviously any deal you make is going to cost something. I'm just saying it's not Granlund we should be looking to move... even if we don't think he'll be better than a #2.

Granlund isn't going to get us a better #1 center either without giving up other assets.

The problem is, if you move Granlund and get the upgrade at #1, you are still going to have issues at #2 as Koivu is getting older every day. He's not going to be around much longer and then you are still looking for a center.

If we can KEEP Granlund, and trade/sign/develop another player to be the #1, then you are practically set down the middle for years to come.

Scandella, a 2008 second-round draft pick, loves to have fun. He has been friends and defense partners with Spurgeon since their first rookie camp together in Traverse City, Mich., in 2010.

They’re always together at the rink and on the road. They’re seatmates on the Wild charter.

“It’s ridiculous the conversations that we have,” Scandella said. “We watch ‘Sons of Anarchy’ on the plane. Those plane rides when we land, we’re like, ‘Geez we’re already here?’ I make him to listen to my music. He didn’t grow up on this music, but … he’s feeling it, I think.”

What a great bromance.
