Heard last week that their was a good chance that Martin St-Louis will be in Sochi.

An interesting strategy would be for a nation like Canada to name a roster built around the locks (e.g., Crosby, Toews, Weber), but instead of naming bubble players in early January just fill the last slots with long-term injured Canadian players like: Stamkos, Pronger, Souray, Savard, etc...

Then come the week before the Olympics, name the players who have played well over the additional month one has had to evaluate talent to replace players who are injured.

Who will take Stamkos' spot?

I think (and hope) it'll be Giroux, but I think they'll want another sniper like Neal instead.

James Neal:

35GP - 18G - 24A - 42P, 20P in last 16GP.

Neal is not the individual offensive talent that St. Louis is. Could James Neal really carry the Lightning the way St. Louis has been without Stamkos? St. Louis has been the straw that has stirred the drink on that team for a decade. Last time I checked winning an Art Ross makes you better offensively.

It just simply has to be him

I'd argue yes.

1. St. Louis
2. Giroux
3. Neal
4. Hall
5. E. Staal

Those are the front runners it seems. I think they should drop Nash and take Giroux and St. Louis.

Some of them might insist they are good to go, and Canada would be stuck with them...

Honestly, Stamkos probably wouldnt have been in top shape anyway so I am not really sure it's a big blow to team Canada. Still a stacked team.

I am really really hoping fo Marty to get the call

Pity for Stamkos, first omitted in 2010 becouse he had'nt won the Richard that season yet, and now this. Guy was a teenage phenom but will now possibly make his best-on-best debut at age 27. Maybe he hopes for a World Cup to arrive sooner than la... Korea.

With all these responses I suppose Giroux / MSL are the optimal choice. I didn't consider how heavy down the middle we were. I feel like Giroux is the least likely to get picked Out of MSL / Giroux / Staal though

Really sucks for Stamkos that he can't make it. I really hope MSL gets his spot then, he deserves it so much.

Hope it's St. Louis even though I'm not rooting for Canada. Guy deserves it.

The part of me rooting for Canada to lose wants them to pick Giroux.

Based on need and the list of available players, it'll likely come down to MSL or Neal.

Giroux wasn't on the list of preferred back ups so to speak..I believe it was MSL/Neal/Hall/E.Staal
