So, assuming your inference is accurate, is it a good sign that the Pens' most "physically ready" forward scored 10 points in 44 games at WBS last year? It would appear that if we fill out our top-6 with top-6-type forwards in the near future, they'll come from outside the organization.

its not great, no. But its a lot better than Payerl actually being our best forward prospect.

What are the chances of us signing some of the invited FA guys?

We could use a forward or two in WBS. I guess some of the college guys have thebest hsot at this like BArnes, Rowney and Hathaway.

Also is there any chance of us signing Dea? I know he has some flaws in his game, but he did put up 45 goals last season, and on his goal yesterday you could see his finishing insincts. I wouldnt mind us signing him, we arent exatly loaded on forwards with top 6 potential so taking a chance on a guy like Dea for free doesnt seem like that bad of an idea.

Dea doesn't not have top 6 potential. The guy makes Chris Conner look like a NHL all-star. He got pushed around like a child out there during the few times he was noticeable.

Dea is listed at 6', 160. Of course he's going to get pushed around. Thing is, he's only 19. Not many guys are physically mature at that age. From what I read, he grew 2" before last season, so it's going to take a little time for the weight to catch up.

I don't know if he'll pan out, but given his speed and skill, I wouldn't mind having him in the pool. That said, Tom Fitzgerald said earlier in the week that he thinks Dea still has one more year of draft eligibility though, so I don't think he can be signed. Fitzgerald did say he may go to the rookie tournament in September though.

I'm pretty sure he can be signed as long as it's before the junior season begins.

Agreed. Megna has a lot of potential. Hopefully after another season or two in the AHL he will be able to put everything together.

As far as Marcantuoni goes I think Frolik is a good comparison. He's known as a bit of an agitator, and I think he could potentially turn into an Andrew Shaw-lite for us. He's crazy fast, he works hard, and he's not afraid to get into the dirty areas. Even if he doesn't fully develop his skills offensively, I think he could be an effective bottom six/PK guy.

Pouliot definitely had an assist on the 1st goal. The play he made was fantastic. I'm fairly certain that Troy Josephs scored the goal that was credited to Rust, so who knows what was going on there . The thing that most impressed me about Pouliot is how effortless his skating was.

Maatta was one of the brightest spots for sure. I think he's considerably closer to being NHL ready than Pouliot.

What difference does it make either way? The guy who is most physically ready is a fourth liner. It's not a good thing or a bad thing, it's just a thing.
What did you, and others, think of Hartzell? I think he looks like a future starter. I like how he stayed square to pucks and read plays but it was the warm up that blew me away. He took control like a 10 year vet.

I'm hoping that he spends a year in WB, backs up MAF as Vokoun bows out and then pushes MAF fo a starting job. I do think he's that good. Just wait until a pro defense allows him to play on half of the net or the other.

Another thing I want to mention is how much better the pace was this year compared to last year. Seemed like a lot more energy.

Just saw MM in the hotel I'm staying at. He looks thicker than last year.

Agreed with #66 on the better pace this year. I didn't attend yesterday but watched the stream, which is awesome that the Pen's do that for their fans.

What a difference a year makes from attending as an 18 year old and your first camp, to the 2nd year. As you could clearly see the comfort level in DP this year. And the improvement. As last camp he didn't show much, but yesterday he showed his quality.

Hartzell's probably the oldest guy there, so he should act like a vet.

It seemed like the refs turned their heads on a lot of close icing calls which help not slow the game down.

Love the tone of this article... sounds like Yohe was asking all the D if they feel like "assets" and how they feel about the possibility of being traded.

Welcome to Pittsburgh; one of the classiest organizations in the NHL and unquestionably some of the dumbest media too! :thumbu:

That article struck me the same way, and I had the same reaction.

Those writers should stick to the sport, not the drama they try to create. Although, they don't seem to know much about the sport, especially Rossi and even Yohe. Why would you bring up their being "assets" to these kids who are focusing on just doing their best to make the team?

It was still his first camp and he gave out a lot of direction.

I'll put it this way... he didn't sit around giggling and acting cute.

"Hi guys, my name is Rob Rossi. Yeaaaahhhh....Kris Letang reads my articles. He does. He most certainly does. If you don't believe me, read one of my past articles, in which I tell you he does. So yeah, I got that going for me."

I thought Hartzell looked good. He was very poised and made some good stops. I'm going to wait until I see how he responds to the AHL before I determine whether or not I think he can be an NHL starter. My hope is that he is able to get a few call-ups this year, and be able to be our backup for the 14-15 season. But it all depends on how he responds this year.

As far as Marcantuoni looking thicker, he did say he gained some muscle in an effort to make him stronger and more resistant to injury.

Did anyone that went to the scrimmage take a look at the sports bar/rooftop lounge under construction on Fifth? It's directly across the street at that intersection. I remember hearing something about it a while ago but haven't heard anything at all recently.

I didn't but that's a great idea. Anytime there is something going on at CEC there is plenty of business to go around.

If everything goes perfectly, he'll be a good third liner.

If everything goes perfectly, he's a complimentary top 6 guy. He's got the wheels and the hands for it, IQ is what is lacking and what will inevitably hold him back.
