I know the rule is intended to deter discrimation against religion, ethnicity, etc., but on a personal level I always found it a bit funny that someone could insult any sort of physical feature I have that's lacking but couldn't insult me being half Asian, even though I can personally say that I'd be more offended at the insult to my appearance over the insult to me "eating rice" or whatever.

I think even if the player *was* a Mennonite the tone matters. You can't use it in a pejorative way, even if it's accurate.

Just like any other ethnic or religious term, the tone and context makes a big difference. I do not think there is any nice way of calling someone a Mennonite in the heat of a hockey game.

I hesitate to go with that because it implies far more malice and/or incompetence than is necessary for such a thing to happen and so Occam's Razor might be applicable.

That said, there's just not enough information and evidence for any of us to have a firm conclusion.
