Is anyone else feeling a little uneasy that we haven't heard much about Cowen's contract negotiations? I'm sure he'll resign, I'm just curious as to why it's taking so long and why it's so 'hush hush'.

I'm not really worried. When negotiations get out to the public, it's often because they want to use public opinion as a negotiating tool. The fact that everything's quiet on that front is good news, IMO.

Probably not much to it. He's an RFA and training camp doesn't begin until two months from now. No hurry.

Damn Alfie, that line-up is strong.

It probably would have been over the internal budget so it's safe to say that we wouldn't have signed MacArthur if Alfie stayed... It's also logic to think that we wouldn't have traded for Ryan if we signed both Alfie and Clarkson. We could have also ended up with Clarkson and MacArthur, or Clarkson and Ryan... The other question we could be debating would be "is Clarkson worth 2 millions more per year than MacA?

But whatever I'm happy we got Ryan, we needed a young star 1st liner, not 2nd liners like Clarkson, MacArthur or Alfredsson...

No, clarkson is NOT worth the contract that he got. I would take macarthur and his 2 year contract worth 3.2 million over clarksons 7 year contract worth 5.2 million every time. One reason being that if clarkson sucks, we would be stuck with him for 7 years unless we traded him. With macarthur however, we are only stuck with him for 2 years.

Off-topic question, but what's with the leafs massive amount of cap space? I assume they're willing to spend, so I'm thinking a few more moves are coming from them. Any thoughts?

To be fair, Carolina also had core pieces of their D miss time as well in Pitkanen (26 games missed), Faulk (10), Gleason (6) and McBain (4 to injury). Not really the same level as Ottawa had, but certainly helped push up Corvo's mins last season.

We had catastrophic injuries to our #1 & 5 d-men. Ottawaès defense corps doesnèt look nearly as impressive without them. Corvo was still their #5 when those guys were playing and was always going to get the offensive mins because heès more productive than almost all of them.

OTT GA/G: 2.08, 2nd in NHL
CAR GA/G: 3.31, 29th in NHL

OTT PK%: 88.0, 1st in NHL
CAR PK%: 77.9, 28th in NHL
(CAR was +10:26 in PP - PK time, OTT was -15:50)

CAR D: 80pts
OTT D: 103pts
(Wiercioch would have led their D in scoring and they were a higher scoring team by a large margin, 127 to 112)

I realize they had some poor goaltending but this isn't even an argument. I don't see how you could possibly argue Carolina's D being superior to Ottawa's.

As far as the rest of your post, I think we're agreement?

SA/G:
23rd: Ottawa 31.3
26th: Carolina 32.2

SV%:
1st: Ottawa 0.933
29th: Carolina 0.897

They still have RFAs to sign, notably Kadri, Franson and Gunnarsson.

Itès only $9.4M with an extra 300k in bonuses. Those 3 players could easily eat up all of that cap room and possibly even more.

It's not too much when you look at capgeek.

Seriously the Bozak and Clarckson deals look so bad right now On there.

They both should have gotten a million less.

well he only signed a 1 year in detroit. could always sign him next yr after he wins the cup.

And what is to say detroit will win the cup next year? In addition, if he does somehow win the cup next year, which i very much doubt detroit will, alfredsson will most likely retire. I just don't think detroit will win the cup next year. Yes they were one game away from the wcf, but was that because detroit was actually good or chicago was playing like crap? When chicago finally turned on, they were on fire. No one could stop them after that.

Is it really that much better than:

Ryan-Spezza-Michalek
MacArthur-Turris-Zibanejad
Greening-Pageau-Condra
Conacher-Smith-Neil

or

Ryan-Spezza-Stone
MacArthur-Turris-Michalek
Greening-Zibanejad-Condra

or

We already have plenty of depth and Alfredsson, at this point in his career, isn't THAT much better than some of the prospects we will have replacing him. I'm not trying to say it isn't a downgrade, his leadership will be missed, but his production reached a point where it was replaceable.

BAD defense is BAD. They have overall better offensive possession numbers and still allow more shots AND have to block more while also scoring at a higher rate as a team but produce less on D. Almost all teams with good possession numbers have D cores that vastly out produce Carolina's D. Even Cam Ward's numbers were way below his career averages despite having a winning record. Compare what Carolina ran with at forward to what Ottawa had with injuries and it just looks worse.

I'm convinced more teams then the hawks are expecting the cap to rise to 75ish million next year with the contracts I've been seeing everywhere.

They only make sense if teams are projecting a massive jump

I know this doesn't matter, but i can't understand why we chose to offer Corvo a 1-way for 7th D instead of Andre Benoit, IMO Benoit >> Corvo,

Andre benoit is a really good optionth D
