Considering AV likes to have 2 offensive lines, a shut down line, and an energy line, I would hope Sather would find him a legit energy LWer. Pyatt, Powe, Asham are not that.

Isn't Staal the only person to get a long term deal from Sather as a RFA?

On a 2nd contract, yes. Though Lundqvist would have gotten a long term deal had Sather had the cap space. Instead, he gave Hank a 1 year deal and then re-signed him long term the following January.

Here is an easy way to say it without causing confusion. He's our best defenseman.

Yes. And watching him play in the playoffs when the team was desperate for offense, I think he showed how much better he can become offensively as well when he pushes it and takes some chances. He will become more confident with the puck.

Truly believe he can be the best D in the entire league, and am not sure he is all that far off from that now. He just doesn't have the huge stats that people love. But two way defensemen, there aren't many better.

Agreed, and I don't think it's close TBH. He is a special player and the Rangers are very fortunate to have him. Great trade by Sather.

I think McDonagh breaks out offensively next year and challenges for the Norris.

I think AV is going to get the best he can out of this guy.

I can easily see him breaking out offensively. A guy that can skate as well as him should be taking more chances. The best thing McD does is getting pucks to the net. Wouldn't mind seeing him on the PP at some point next year. Really cant hurt at this point.

Would be a great addition to his game if he finds some untapped offensive potential. He is as complete of a defender you'll find in this league.

Yes. One of many ridiculously good plays he has made that people tend to forget or ignore.
Thank you

Not only do I have really bad memory these days, but I've tried my best to blank that series from my memory. McDonagh is my favorite Ranger not named Lundqvist

The thing is.. Does Mcdonagh right now provide enough offense to go along with his shut down D to be paid 5M on a 2nd contract?

I'll be absolutely shocked if he gets a penny over $4M. There's no way he has a cap hit higher than that on his second contract, not with Sather at the helm. Figure he gets something similar to what Staal got.

Is this a serious question? Is it worth paying arguably the best young DMan in the league 5 mil a year? Is that what you are asking right now?

IMO those are all very generous contracts. Would love to see it.

well lets be fair, Stepan had an amazing season but he didnt really start producing until mid February last year, he only performed as a 1C for half a season.

Mcdonagh at 4.5M is making more than Staal did when he signed his 2nd contract which is a very big honor seeing as the Rangers have always viewed Staal as the rock of their defense.

Hagelin and Zucc will see bridge contracts, hell Stepan IMO will too.

If the Rangers move a dman, I'm hoping they sign Scuderi. So underrated. Hard nosed, defensive dman. He is a better skater than he gets credit for, hard to play against, blocks shots. He would fit in well. Plays both sides.

Doubt the Rangers move a defenseman at this point. Would rather just keep DZ and roll with this crazy blueline:

McDonagh-Girardi
Staal-Del Zotto
Moore-Stralman

So...good.
